Jason Patric speaks out on FX's 'Powers' role

Jason-Patric

Jason Patric has signed on to star in FX’s comic adaptation of Powers.

Patric, who stole the show in the recent movie The Losers and, of course, appeared in films such as Rush, will star as a homicide detective devoted solely to cases that involve people with superpowers. The pilot was penned by Charles H. Eglee (The Shield).

The move marks the actor’s first regular TV series gig. Patric says he switched his focus from movies and theater to television because he’s drawn to strong storytelling.

“In my movies I’ve always tried to find compelling stories and primal characters that will carry you through them,” Patric tells EW exclusively. “It has been become increasingly more difficult to tell stories via movies these days; studios are more interested in selling a weekend than telling a story. Powers is unlike anything I’ve ever seen  and FX is up to the challenge.”

Though the project is still in the pilot stage, you rarely see this sort of network enthusiasm for shows that don’t get a series order: “We’ve been asked repeatedly why it has taken so long to bring our series adaptation of Powers to fruition,” said FX chief John Landgraf. “It is for the same reason we cast Jason Patric in this role; we are aiming for something extraordinary. The lead role of Detective Christian Walker is an extremely layered character and we needed Jason, who was so brilliant in films like Narc and Rush, to bring him fully to life. He is pitch perfect for this role and we are honored that he chose FX for his first foray into episodic television.”

He hardly “stole the show” in “The Losers.” He was good, but not remarkably better than anyone else in the cast.

“See, you have two 4′s right here. You don’t know how to play this game, do you?”

Jason Patrick was awsome in The Losers, he was a great support role for that movie. He makes one hell of a bad guy, he should do that kind of role more often. Also Jeffery Morgan did one hell of a job also. He nailed the character of Col. Clay accurately, I could’nt imagine anyone play him. I would like to see what they could both do in a sequel.

He actually did steal the show. LOSERS was a horrible movie with ZERO narrative drive. The only thing that saved it was when Patric was onscreen. He was hilarious.
Screw that movie. How about AFTER DARK MY SWEET, RUSH, NARC, or my personal favorite- YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS where he delivers maybe the best monologue in film history. The guy is genius.

Just a bad, charisma-less choice. So soon after Lights Out, FX has another dud on its hands.

I like the comics a lot, but I’m sad Kyle Chandler isn’t playing Walker. He would’ve been great, but he’s great in everything so hopefully something even better will come his way.

I know man, I keep hoping he’ll get another really good TV show very soon, or that he can finally become a movie star because of Super 8.

After FNL, people relate him to being a badass so I could see him doing some kind of Justified type show.

I agree. Kyle Chandler would have made “Powers” must-see TV for me, but I’m glad he’s at a place in his career where he can be choosy about his roles. It’s about time!

Jon Hamm would’ve been perfect casting.

Except that he already has a show…

Patric RULES. This could be very cool

I am so happy to see Jason Patric nabbed this role. He is a fantastic, intelligent actor and gorgeous! Hope they have some steamy scenes planned for him!

Kyle Chandler is trying to break into movies, so I don’t think he’s going to take on another episodic tv role. He’s trying to move his career forward. I am surprised they got someone as good as Jason for the part. Seeing so many more film actors playing leading men in TV nowadays.

Patric is absolutely right. The only place to tell real stories now is in the episodic format. The studios arent making anymore Rush’. or Narcs. This guy has a 25 year career of very eclectic film choices. I cant wait to see what he brings to Powers. He was born to play Walker. I bet he attracts other great actors.

Great choice. I hope the pilot lives up to its promise & FX picks it up as a series.

Lucy Punch is the only good thing in Bad teacher and is an excellent comedic actress.
