'Expedition Impossible' debuts in ratings top spot

Mark Burnett’s new adventure competition series Expedition Impossible debuted as the top-rated show Thursday night.

Expedition benefited from a lack of competition during the evening, delivering a summer-solid 7 million viewers and a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49. That tied its lead-in Wipeout (7.5 million, 2.3) as the highest-rated show. The return of cop series Rookie Blue (5.9 million, 1.6) underperformed at 10 p.m.

Networks aired mostly repeats. Fox had So You Think You Can Dance (6.3 million, 1.9), down 14 percent this week. Also, NBC aired Love Bites (2 million, 0.8), down 20 percent.

Thought EI was good – didn’t catch the host’s name though. If all teams start each leg at the same time, this may be interesting.

I watched this show and did enjoy it – but damn is it not a straight rip off of “Amazing Race”? Ok, teams here are 3 and not 2 people, but even the host standing at finish line to greet people and last teacm across is eliminated – all the same. Challenges and misdirection – all the same. It is such a rip off of the race that I almost thought I was watching CBS on Sunday night. Mark Burnett needs to get a little original or atleast disguise his own cannabalism.

A little like AR, but more like what MB had done in the past – can’t remember the name of it, but it had teams of 4, I believe, and it was like a four or five day trek in the wilderness/dessert – if you didn’t reach a checkpoint within an alotted time, you were kicked off.

Except AR hands out $1 million to the winner to be split 2 ways and this cheap rip-off is only giving the winners $150,000 to be split 3 ways. Talk about exploitation.

@Torrance5: To me, Expedition Impossible is what Amazing Race used to be. I remember in the early days when TAR had tough challenges like climbing up an icy mountain, whitewater rafting down a wild river, bungee jumping–exciting stuff like that. Now what are they doing: cleaning chimneys, carrying furniture down a street, eating food on a ferris wheel, etc. Expedition Impossible is a lot better than TAR.

        except not really.

the worst TAR seasons > expedition impossible

  • Toby

It looks like Love Bites really does.

Mark Burnett gives Jerry Bruckheimer a run for his money. ABC better take notice to see CBS’ top rated reality competition series getting too old with Survivor and Amazing Race.

    • Coco

The difference is…AR is excellent. EI was barely fair

    • Lecakes

Survivor and the Amazing Race will never get old. Ever!

  • Brent

This was :”Expedition” = “Race”, “Imposible” = “Amazing”. I was hoping for elements of Survivor like being marooned in the desert, told to form teams right on the spot without formerly meeting the contestants, create their own base camps and perform tasks and expeditions to collect points and have more direct competitions against the oposing team and wich ever team looses they get to send someone back home packing and then when the numbers dwindle each competitor face off until he/she completes the expedition. Either way, the editing was awful, the contestants cliche. The Amazing Race is much better than this!

  • Barry

This just goes to show that people watch any “reality” crap that the networks serve up.

  • agent017

Eco Challenge for amateurs. For those who don’t remember, Eco Challenge was an adventure race which created by Mark Burnett in the mid-90’s. So he is just reusing/updating one of his own ideas.

i accidentally started watching love bites last week after a re-run of parks and rec, and i really like it! (except i didn’t really like the whole astronaut part at the end of last nights episode — even though it had ken jeoung and isaiah mustafa in it, which was a nice surprise) but anyway, i hope it is here to stay!

  • Andrew

The program was a huge rip-off of “The Amaazing Race.” TAR is much better.

  • damian

There is no question The Amazing Race is superior but this will do while waiting. I really hope some new wrenches are thrown into the mix though with the upcoming season, it’s getting a little predictable and with everyone helping each other get through challenges (like that one on the motorbike and the map) they need some new rules to make it tougher.

  • Mark

Top spot? Really. If it tied with Wipeout in the demo and Wipeout had more total viewers, it would seem logical that Wipeout took the top spot.

  • PLEASE James Hibberd

Would you consider covering and recapping this show? Granted, it is no TAR but there is hardly anything on during the summer and this does look like it will have some promise.

  • dman

The difference in EI and AR is that this show is all out in the wilderness. There is no city blocks to run around and no lame ass simple challenges. They want the contestants to WORK for the win. Plus it is all supposed to take place within driving range. No AIRPORTS…which is welcome. And it is all supposed to be within one geographic area…which seems to be Morroco. And they are only gone for less than 3 weeks as opposed to the month or so that Amazing Race goes on.
Pretty good show on its own merits. I appreciate the difficulty level being raised.

This show and “101 Ways” were totally dull. Bring back Japanese Game Show!

  • Matt2

Loved 101 Ways to Leave, Expedition Impossible, and Wipeout: Nerds vs Hotties. But I loved the scripted dramas even more- Combat Hospital and Rookie Blue.

    • Ryan

I have gotten really into Rookie Blue. Dear God I hope that doesn’t mean it gets canceled….
