Keith Olbermann cuts show short for Rachel Maddow

Keith Olbermann responded to complaints that his 63-minute show on Current TV was forcing viewers to choose between his show and that of his protege, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. Olbermann’s new program doesn’t go head-to-head with Maddow’s program, but its final three minutes overlap with the first three of Maddow’s at 9 p.m. Three days after essentially saying, “Too bad, it’s a competition,” Olbermann reversed course. “At @current we’ll soon have a 9 PM companion commentary show to mine,” tweeted Olbermann. “But in the interim there is no reason for me to be overlapping with my friend Rachel, nor to ignore the wishes of those who’ve been so loyal to both of us for so long. We’ve heard you: as of tomorrow night Countdown finishes at 9. Bonus stuff will instead go to Countdown Online. Thanks for upsiding my head on this :)”

That Keith Olbermann sure sounds like a fine, reasonable man. I’m sure he’s a pleasure to work with!

    • gag

exactly what I was thinking Mitch!!!! lol, you get the post of the day award.

@lydia – I have a DVR and it does make a difference as to the time. Mine will not allow me to record a show if the beginning of it overlaps the end of the previous one. I had set a show to record an extra minute, since sometimes the recording cuts off the very end. But then when I tried to set up recordings of the following show, it would not record due to the overlap. As to the rest of your post, you are a tool. If you really are a doctor, too bad they don’t make you learn grammar or spelling in medical school.

    • LISA G!

      LOL @ Mitch! Cute.

  • Philly Ray

Don’t these people know what a DVR is?

    • Asha

Not everyone has a DVR, nor should they need one because one show wants to have a screwy air time. I think Olbermann is a class act and this is just more proof.

      • J. Norman

I’m pretty sure that anyone who has Current TV is very, very likely to have a DVR. Nice try, though

      • Jon

I’d like to meet someone who can afford a cable package with Current TV (I think it’s called the “Premier Premium Platinum Every Channel on Earth Package” at Cox)but not a DVR.

      • Eddy

It is basic on Verizon FiOS.

  • EW Morons

Taken the agenda pushing to a new level EW? More people were drafted in the NBA last night than watch either of these shows but keep doing stories on Olbermann Jeff.

    • Matt

Maybe you’re an independent thinker…maybe you’re just regurgitating pundit rhetoric. The fact that you sound just like a pundit, while offering ZERO supporting facts, does not sway well in your favor.

    • Wow

Have you ever gone to therapy? I think some time in deep reflection could help you. I have never seen a story about Olbermann before on EW and this article just gave some information to viewers. You don’t have to click on it if you don’t want to. Why do people get so irate about ANYTHING that could in any way shape or form relate to politics. Everyone just needs to chill. It’s ridiculous.

      • Wowser

Then you probably don’t check the EW site that often…..They have been running Olberman stories for at least a month now. There have been several. It is a blatant advertisement for Olbermans new show. They want to make sure they let their vast number of viewers know what network he has landed on. Problem is, most people don’t have that network, and the rest of us don’t care about the blowhard.

keith add Rachel Maddow show to current lineup

    • Bob

She’s under contract with MSNBC into 2012. He hasn’t been coy about wanting to have her take over the 9:00PM slot at Current. Guess it’ll be up to her when her contract ends next year.

  • Mrs. Featherbottom

Sounds like a stretch to say “complaints”, probably more like “complaint”…

    • David

You are correct Mrs. Featherbottom. And the complaint was probably filed by Ms. Maddow’s better half!

  • sydney

Uh, I watched Keith, set my DVR for Maddow and when his show was done I watched the missed minutes on my DVR and caught up to real time during commercial breaks. Not difficult, besides, she has a full podcast available for download and various other media content. If some people are not complaining they are just not happy.

  • voiceoftheunsilentmajority

One hour or two hours of mediocrity, what’s the difference? Everyone in America knows where the true spin stops for the real ratings! And that is my talking point memo! Lol

  • Jon

Keith’s first night major-demo rating was 0.0. First night. Why does EW pretend he’s relevant?

    • PMSNBC

Because EW clearly has a left wing agenda for some reason. Notice the almost daily anti-Fox blogs or what is Jon Stewart doing this minute blogs.

  • What is the What

Whom is this? Current what? Is this a real channel?

  • DGH

If you don’t have a dvr I recommend getting one it make tv airtimes irrelevent. Watch it when you want plus no commercials!(which is the best part)

  • PMSNBC

Those 143 people who watch both shows got what they wanted. Grats.

  • John

the question is, who in their right mind, watches either one of these two morons?

  • Eric

how nice of him to make it easier for the 6 people that watch these shows

  • will g alvira

Good call on Keith’s part. He and Rachel are great American patriots who truly believe in democracy, freedom , piece ,and justice . Totally the opposite of what a particular cable ” news ( ha ha ha ha ha ) channel “stands for . Fnn??? Blah!!!!!

    • will g alvira

      Misinformed !!!!! Hahahahaha….

  • Eddy

Honestly, I think Keith is a self-righteous blowhard who runs his show as an echo chamber and never brings on anyone who disagrees with him. Rachel, on the other hand, is wittier, more willing to engage the other side, and much more conscious that her show is much more about the issues than it is about her. I’d take three minutes of Rachel over an hour of Keith every day of the week and twice on Sunday (except, of course, that their shows are on weeknights, but you get the point).
