Law & Order: SVU has found two new detectives: Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino will join the show as series regulars.
Giddish starred on NBC’s short-lived Chase and has also appeared on The Good Wife. Pino starred for seven seasons on Cold Case. The duo join the show as it enters its 13th season.
The hires come in the wake of Chris Meloni leaving the show. They also provide a potential replacement, of sorts, for Mariska Hargitay — who will maintain a presence on the show all season long, but may not and who will appear in every episode. The network is also leaving open the possibility of more L&O: SVU cast changes (naturally!). So EW readers, this new team, what say you: Better? Worse?

I was disappointed when Christopher was replaced. But Danny Pino is so much better. SVU is the one thing that I look forward to during the week . Pleeeease don’t take it off the air!

They look like they should come with a Sears photo-frame; maybe Meloni and Hargitay worked because they looked a little different from the 1 or 2 archetypes that television characters are allowed to look like?
Hold on a minute! I’m not taking it off my TIVO!!! It worked for Original Recipe! We’ll have to wait and see what happens next season.
It didn’t work for Original Recipe after Jerry Orbach. Chris Meloni leaving and Mariska Hargitay phoning in cameos is a comparable loss. Unless they do something like pair Kelli with Ice-T, SVU will follow in the footsteps of Original Recipe post-Orbach…

No point in even trying to watch. He was the reason I stopped watching Cold Case in the first season. They’d have done better bringing in Benjamin Bratt. He can at least play a darker side of a character convincingly.
They should just promote Fin and give Munch a new partner in the background. That would give them a bit of continuity instead of putting the newcomers in the front and center and Fin and Munch remaining side kicks.

Nobody could replace Jerry Orbach. The man was a national treasure. Chris Meloni…um, yeah, definately replaceable.
Not saying Meloni isn’t replaceable, just saying not with Danny Pino.
And agreeing with you wholeheartedly about Jerry Orbach, though even if he had lived he couldn’t have saved L&O: Trial by Jury.
I agree with Fyrkat. They should use Fin and Munch more this year to increase continuity while we all get accustomed to the new actors. I WILL miss Christopher Meloni and wonder how they’ll write him out of the plot line.
Bringing back Benjamin Bratt from the Mothership would be cool, too. I’d have no problem with that!

I’ll watch at least to see what they do with Giddish’s character. LOVED her character on Chase; not so much on Good Wife.

Not too happy, I really love Chris Meloni and Marsika Harigaty! Guess I’ll have to watch and see if these new people have chemistry!
I gotta say, I can see Kelly Giddish fitting into this role a lot better than Jennifer Love Hewitt, who they were talking about before.
Have missed Danny Pino on my TV. I’ll start watching SVU again now.
These people look so horrible. They should have gotten the blonde girl from cold case! She was hott and a good detective! Lol
Are you kidding? At least Kiddish is convincing as a cop (did I just say that?)more than Morrison who always looked like a fragile albino to me…not that I ever watched that show. I would rather have convincing looking cops that hollywood pretty people. At least Hargitay and Meloni looked like real cops (close enough)
But it’s her vulnerablility that made her more believable as a detective. Not all detectives are strong!
I assume this is a joke, right? Kelli Giddish is so much hotter than that pale, sickly-looking woman with bad hair on Cold Case! And from the acting I’ve seen from her, Giddish is about three light-years ahead in talent.
You better put down that crack pipe. Morris is WAY hotter than Giddish. Actually, Giddish looks like Gollum compared to Morris. As for acting, they both pretty mediocre.
Morris is hotter than the other girl who’s show lasted a couple of months! Cold case lasted years!!
I loved Danny Pino on Cold Case. I might actually START watching this show regularly because of him. As a teen of the 90s I could never take Christopher Meloni seriously as a bad-ass. I always pictured him as Casey Jones from the TMNT movies.
Meloni wasn’t Casey Jones. He was played by Elias Koteas. (I made the same mistake too)
If you want to see Meloni do bad-ass — rent Oz. He takes bad-ass to a new level.
He was soooo bad-ass in OZ as Chris Keller, one of my all time Fav series!!
It took me many seasons before I got Chris Keller out of my head when I saw Elliot Stabler. Meloni is so bad azz, it is scary.

Danny Pino seems fine, if a bit twinky compared to Chris Meloni’s intense physicality. Kelli Giddish just seems like another skinny Hollywood bleached blonde, not a tough NYC detective.

As usual, they can’t give a series long enough to catch on. Kelly Giddish was very convincing on Chase. One of the few female stars that actually came off as competent mentally & physically, to be a detective.
That’s what I’m saying! KG was an awesome badass on Chase & I’m sorry it’s gone. I’m not deleting them from the DVR just yet!
I agree. I loved chase! Mad that it got cancelled. I also love danny. I think it could work with them two.
Kelli is one hell of a tough US Marshall on Chase. She would be fine on SUV.

That’s where I originally knew him from.. It took me a while to buy into him as a “good guy” on SVU. Keller was pure evil..
