'HIMYM': Carter Bays talks new cast member Martin Short and what else is in store for season 7 (more Nora!)

The good news for Marshall Eriksen just keeps rolling in. Jason Segel’s character — who had a tumultuous year last season with the shocking passing of his father, not to mention work and fertility woes — will be gainfully employed in the seventh season… and by none other than Martin Short.

How I Met Your Mother creator and writer Carter Bays confirmed to EW that Short will be joining the cast as Marshall’s new boss. “We had a meeting with him a couple months ago and he was up for doing something fun,” says Bays of the star, who was last seen on Damages. In fact, it was his Emmy-nominated role as the devious Leonard Winstone on the drama series, in addition to his iconic comedy career, that really excited Bays about getting Short on board.

“We’re all huge fans … he’s had such an incredible career,” Bays says of the SCTV alum, “We all love Martin Short as a comedy legend, but [his performance on] Damages is what sold me to have him on our show. [His character] is going to be funny, but there is going to be some more serious stuff, too, since we deal with the full spectrum of human emotion on our show. And Martin Short is such a diverse talent.”

The timing couldn’t have worked out better for the HIMYM cast and crew, either. In the sixth season finale (“Challenge Accepted”), Dave Foley played Mr. Bloom, the man who interviewed Marshall for his dream job as an environmental lawyer. While Bays tells EW they hoped to have Foley “for a recurring gig on the show,” the Kids in the Hall star’s new pilot, How To Be a Gentleman, got picked up. “We traded one Canadian comedy legend for another,” Bays joked of getting Short to step in.

But, don’t jump the gun too fast, HIMYM fans: This doesn’t necessarily mean Short will be playing Foley’s role. Nevertheless, whichever place of employment Short’s character is from, he will oversee Segel’s Marshall. Says Bays, “You’ll see Marshall get settled into work in a really funny way. We knew that we wanted him to have a funny boss. Martin Short and Jason Segel in a work environment felt like a perfect combination.”

Fans won’t have to wait long to see Marshall get the news his new job, though. “It’ll kick off right away in the premiere,” Bays confirms, adding, “It’s a new chapter for all the characters.”

In addition to Marshall starting his new job and celebrating Lily’s pregnancy, expect a renewed focus on Barney and Robin, who appeared to be rekindling their romance in the season finale. While Bays wouldn’t confirm or deny the popular theory that Robin is Barney’s future bride, he did say there will be something of a love triangle: “There will be some twists and turns now that Nora [actress Nazanin Boniadi] is back in the picture.”

So will this ultimately mean heartbreak for Robin? Perhaps, but for now, the only heartbreak the HIMYM writers might explore for our favorite Canadian news reporter is, “Robin’s reaction to the Canucks’ devastating loss in the Stanley Cup.” Hey, at least she’ll have fellow Canuck Martin Short to share in her pain, eh?

How about killing off all of the characters except Barney? Neil Patrick Harris is so far superior to the rest of the cast and writers of this once novel show.

Every joke is a doodie/poop joke. It’s stupid already. The characters do not have to grow anymore because frankly they are grown ups as is. The only time the show is on a high note is when Neil Patrick Harris is on.

Can anyone honestly say when they watch an episode for a second time that it is funny? No. Because it was not even funny the first time.

This has to be the most overrated show on television. End of story.

How about you get a life? Don’t watch it if you dislike it.

    • kt

      Um….what show are you watching?
1.) I’m pretty sure the jokes vary beyond what you mentioned.
2.) I would argue that people never finish growing (e.i.-Marshall changed a lot after the passing of his dad). Barney is obviously going to grow up in the next season and be in a serious, committed relationship.
3.) I can watch practically any episode multiple times and still laugh.
4.) I would say it’s one of the most UNDERrated shows on TV. Please, enlighten me with the accolades it has won, because not many are coming to mind. (Which is rather unfortunate.)

      End of story.

So stop watching. I actually enjoy the reruns, and there are enough people out there who agree to keep the show coming back year after year.

Do you feel better now? That must have been building inside you for a while. Thank god you have random newsposts on the internet, otherwise you might have had to yell at some stranger on the street about how much you hate How I Met Your Mother.

If the writers are sharp, they will set up a plotline where Robin is arrested for rioting after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup.

    • pie thrower

Ummm….Ken, they are not that sharp.

      • Gravity

We got it man. You can probably move on now. I’m sure there’s a Glee article you can troll or something.

      • The Truth

Sorry, I’m with Alex. Loved the show at first but it’s way past its prime. Time to sew things up.

  • Abby

it doesn’t even matter who the mother is, the show is awesome and hilarious. I love that they still reference stuff from 6 years ago LOL can’t wait to see Martin Short on it!

  • mikeman

man… too little too late. this show completely lost me over the last two years.

  • TQB

Not to be nudgy, here, but isn’t Robin from central Canada, not Vancouver? Isn’t she a Maple Leafs fan? Do all the Canadians just root for whichever Canadian team is winning?

    • Jen

Isn’t that the polite Canadian thing to do, eh? Drowning her sorrows of the Collective Canuck loss at the Hoser Hut.

    • Marie

In other episodes it showed her as a Canucks fan. Particulary in the episode where they are talking about moving out of the apartment and talking about how certain damages happened to the apt… Shoots to a clip of “the night you aun robin went all canadian” and it’s robin drunk in a Canucks jersey reinacting a Canucks Stanley cup game.

  • Rebecca

Love everything about this show. I’m happy when quality television is recognized.

  • Renee

This is exciting news; I love Martin Short! And the show definitely needs some new life in it. I hope this will help!

You really make it seem really easy along with your presentation but I in finding this matter to be actually something which I feel I’d by no means understand. It seems too complex and very vast for me. I am taking a look forward on your next post, I’ll attempt to get the hold of it!
