'The Killing' producer explains finale, talks season 2

Categories:

The Killing fans wondering who killed Rosie Larson are going to have to wait until season 2, but executive producer Veena Sud plans to give you plenty of other reasons to stick around.

When Sud launched the acclaimed crime drama based on a Danish series, her goal was to create a world that broke the rules of traditional crime dramas. The show would have “slow burn storytelling” and avoid being formulaic.

“I loved the length of the original series how they took their time to go through all the twists and turns,” she says of the 20-episode Forbrydelsen, which was originally intended to serve as a stand-alone mini-series rather continue beyond one season. READ FULL STORY »

Whodunit? Who knows!

In an acclaimed first season filled with plenty of twists, AMC’s The Killing saved its biggest shock for the very end: The show’s murder mystery was left unsolved and will continue into season two.

Our heroes Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder seemingly finished Rosie Larson case in tonight’s finale, arresting mayoral candidate Darren Richmond for the murder of a teenage girl. But in the episode’s final moments, Linden learns her partner may have fabricated a key piece of evidence — putting their case in jeopardy, plus casting doubt on Richmond’s guilt and Holder’s agenda. Encouraging news for fans of Nikki Newman, aka Melody Thomas Scott, who Tweeted earlier this month that she’s off The Young and the Restless and doesn’t know when she’ll be back on the CBS drama. The drama’s head writer told the press Sunday at the Daytime Emmys that Scott’s absence from the show isn’t as bad as it looks.

“Melody is phenomenal. Of course she will be [with the show] again,” said Maria Bell, who answered questions from the press backstage at the Daytime Emmys Sunday after her staff won for writing the drama. “She’s in a story line where she left town but she will be back. We love Melody. She’s one of the hearts and souls of Young and the Restless. Don’t be worried. She will be back.”

Scott tweeted that her last tape date was April 28 and that she had not received scripts since then, nor had she heard from Y&R.

As the quirky best friend to dead-and-resurrected Jane on Drop Dead Diva, April Bowlby became a fan favorite in season 1. But in season 3, which kicks off tonight, Bowlby tells EW that her character is in for a host of all-new challenges.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Tell me a little about this season.
Well, this season I think is a little more edgy. I know that Jane, played by Brooke Elliott, gets more boyfriends. She gets a little more flirty, and she’s dating more, getting a little more sexual. Also, my character as well, I hook up with the angel this season [Laughs]. Fred and I finally do the deed, so there’s a lot of little racy storylines going on with relationships this season. And, of course, we’ve got the court cases which are incredible. We did one episode that’s about two lesbians who tried to go to prom. They tried but the school wouldn’t let them buy tickets, so we addressed that in one of our episodes, which was really cool. There’s definitely a lot of stuff going on this year. READ FULL STORY »

Emmy nominating ballots due a week from today! Five burning questions answered.

On June 24, Emmy nominating ballots are due. (View the ballot listings online here. Fringe‘s Joshua Jackson and Mike & Molly‘s Melissa McCarthy will announce the nominees on July 14.) To celebrate, we phoned John Leverence, the Television Academy’s SVP of Awards, and asked a few evergreen burning questions.

• Who decides whether a show like Glee or Castle enters as a comedy or drama? Producers submit themselves, and then there is a review. Leverence says there have been ongoing discussions about whether to split the comedy category into two — sitcoms and dramedies. “When the Board was thinking about this, the feeling was that no, comedy is a broad spectrum, but we think that the comedy series category can accommodate that broad spectrum. You have the same kind of thing going on in the drama series. You have something like The Killing, which after every episode you want to go kill yourself … But you have things like Castle and White Collar,” he says. “The awards committee did a review, looked at the lineup, and they said, ‘The hell with it, let’s leave comedies where they are.’ The Board of Governors does not want to get into a game of Whac-A-Mole.”  READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' season 11 auditions begin June 28 in St. Louis

Fox has announced that the next season of American Idol will begin auditioning contestants in St. Louis on Tuesday, June 28. From there, Idol auditions will continue in Portland, Ore., on July 2; San Diego, Calif., on July 8; Pittsburgh, Penn., on July 15; Charleston, S.C., on July 22; Denver, Colo., on July 29; and finally concluding in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 26. It’s unclear at this time whether the season 10 judging panel of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler will be returning for season 11 — Jackson told George Lopez last month that all three would be back, but earlier this week Lopez admitted that she was “on the fence” about returning. American Idol was yet again the No. 1 show on television this season, although the season ended with the show’s lowest-rated performance finale ever. Luckily, it rebounded with its finale results show, which rose 12 percent from season 9.

'Drop Dead Diva' returns: Brooke Elliott talks season 3 spoilers!

Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva returns Sunday night, and with it, guest star Paula Abdul, who’s been known to pop up in Jane’s dreams when she has a crisis with Grayson. And him being in a coma after getting hit by a car and finally calling her “Deb,” the name of his late fiancée whose soul is now in attorney Jane’s body, certainly qualifies. Diva star Brooke Elliott never thought she’d be in bed with Paula Abdul. “Who would?” she jokes. “You know, when you grow up listening to Paula Abdul’s music, and then you’re in bed with her, it’s really surreal. It was a fun scene to do. We  just had to get the logistics of both she and I being in there and then Fred [Ben Feldman] joining. You can’t see Fred at first, or it’ll blow the whole thing. It was like, ‘Well, if Ben’s just under the covers, you see the bump. How do you get Ben in the bed?!’”

The premiere finds Jane representing a movie star accused of a hit-and-run whose soon-to-be ex-wife (LeAnn Rimes) decides to testify on his behalf. ”We always make a joke on the set to all the guest stars. We’re like, ‘Um, by the way, I always win. It may look like in Act 2 that I’m not going to, but I will. I come through in Act 3 and Act 4. Just when you think you have it, you don’t,’” Elliott says, using her best Deb-in-Jane inflection. The Broadway vet was excited to work with Rimes. ”I told her I used to drive around in my parents’ minivan belting out her songs,” she says. “And then I felt really stupid.’” READ FULL STORY »

No 'Entourage' cameo for Anthony Weiner

Categories: Cable, Entourage, TV Biz

One day after resigning from Congress in disgrace, Anthony Weiner is receiving a lot of offers to take advantage of his newfound infamy. In a Huffington Post letter, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt offered him a raise to come work for his management group. But the one offer everyone is really talking about is a cameo in an upcoming episode of Entourage, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Well, it’s not going to happen. And it was never going to happen. Entourage executive producer Doug Ellin had joked about the possibility on a recent episode of CNBC’s Squawk Box (see video below), but he now says there was never any invitation or conversations about bringing Weiner on to the show, which premieres its last season next month. “I made a joke on CNBC last week,” Ellin tells EW in a statement. “Maybe that is where this was coming from.” READ FULL STORY »
