Salt Lake City wants to put a black wrapper on NBC’s new drama series The Playboy Club.

The NBC affiliate in Utah announced on its Web site that it won’t air the new drama series this fall. The decision “is based on the station’s long-term policy to screen programming for material which significant portions of our audience may find objectionable.”

The station’s president and CEO Mark Willes said Playboy is not a match for the station’s brand. “The Playboy brand is known internationally. Everyone is clear what it stands for,” he said in a statement. “We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand.” READ FULL STORY »

HBO defends 'Game of Thrones' shocker

Spoiler alert from Sunday’s episode…

“The only reason we watched [Game of Thrones] was for Sean Bean,” groused EW reader Steve. “Way to go HBO, time to switch to Showtime.”

That’s a pretty common reaction among some viewers after watching Sunday’s episode of HBO’s fantasy series, especially among those who didn’t read the Thrones novel by George R. R. Martin. With the show’s ninth hour taking the unprecedented step of killing off a drama series’ main character (and its best known actor) in the first season, some fans are threatening to never watch the program again.

“Most of you who think this was some sort of brilliant move or something don’t understand the difference between a book audience and a TV audience,” argued EW reader Tamcamry. “TV audiences need to invest in characters. Most of the other characters I don’t care much about. While the show will probably still appeal to the ‘wow’ crowd, it’s mass appeal just got beheaded.”

HBO executives knew what they were getting into when they took on Thrones, and programming president Sue Naegle says axing Ned Stark made the show creatively more attractive. “I loved it,” Naegle says. “The book series was filled with unexpected twists and turns. I loved this idea we’d bring together the group of characters, then once you started to believe all the tropes of heroes, you pull the rug out from under them. It’s the opposite of feeling manipulated.” READ FULL STORY »

'Awkward': Watch the trailer for MTV's new scripted comedy series -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

MTV is dipping into the scripted series waters again, and EW has an exclusive look at the trailer for the network’s comedy series, Awkward, which premieres on July 19 at 11 p.m. after Teen Mom. Created by Lauren Iungerich, Awkward is about teenager Jenna Hamilton (One Tree Hill‘s Ashley Rickards) who becomes a school celebrity after people mistakenly think she attempted suicide. “It’s got a really unique and completely contemporary point of view about growing up female in today’s day and age,” says MTV’s Head of Programming David Janollari. “The show really embodies our internal mantra of ‘Our lives amplified.’ In this case, it’s a teenage girl who goes from, as she describes herself, ‘almost invisible’ to completely visible and famous in her school because of this misunderstanding of epic proportions.”

Watch the trailer, which features some potentially NSFW language, below… READ FULL STORY »

First look at Andy Samberg, Chief Shark Officer -- EXCLUSIVE

Did Andy Samberg have any reservations about being the host — or Chief Shark Officer — for Discovery’s 24th annual Shark Week, which kicks off July 31? “I had reservations at the restaurant of destiny,” he jokes to EW. “It has very little to do with me on the surface, which to me was a perfect sign that I should do it. Everyone loves Shark Week. I love Shark Week. I was just so flattered. The pitch was that I would get to fly to the Bahamas and literally swim with sharks, and I was thinking there’s no way I would ever have the balls to do that on my own, so I went for it.”

This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly has the first look at Samberg swimming with Caribbean reef sharks for his own Aug. 4 special, Shark City. “My buddy John Solomon, who’s a director and a writer at SNL came with me. We were doing a bunch of wrap-arounds for the show, and I’d been floating there in the water, and I was like, ‘Okay, I think we got that. Should we chum the water and get some sharks over here?’ And everyone on the boat kinda looked down, kinda looked away, like, ‘Yeah, yeah, we should, um, get some sharks over here,’” Samberg recalls. “It turned out that there had been huge sharks all around me the entire time, and I just hadn’t realized it because they were under the water.”  READ FULL STORY »

Tisha Campbell-Martin talks about her return in Lifetime's 'The Protector'

Tisha Campbell-Martin knows that casual TV watchers remember her from her many roles on half-hour comedies — perhaps, most notably, her role as the wife of Damon Wayans on My Wife and Kids, a character she played for five years.

But tonight, Campbell-Martin joins Ally Walker (Sons of Anarchy) in The Protector, a new Lifetime series that follows a detective team.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tell me about the The Protector?
TISHA CAMPBELL-MARTIN: For one, Ally Walker is amazing to work with. She’s been doing Sons of Anarchy and Profiler but now she’s back with this. For me, it’s been a while. I started out doing drama, and it’s been a while since I’ve done this medium. As a matter of fact, my husband and I had agreed for many, many years to not do any dramas because of the long hours. It can be 14- to 16-hour days, so now that I’m doing a drama again, the kids are older. It’s amazing to go back to. It’s a dramedy, but it’s great to go back to that, especially being that I was considered a sitcom girl for so long. The Protector is about a detective, Ally Walker’s character, who not only has to protect people at her job as a homicide detective, but she also has children. She’s balancing the two lives and keeping them completely separate at the same time. I play her partner in the homicide division so we get to be badasses, and we get to show the other side of our lives. I think people are gonna relate to it because it’s so much fun. Our chemistry is so wicked. READ FULL STORY »

Chris Rock reverses himself on controversial Tracy Morgan routine: 'I don't support it at all'

Categories: 30 Rock, TV Biz

On second thought, Chris Rock does want to live in a world where Tracy Morgan can’t say hugely offensive things.

Rock backed off his Tweet supporting the embattled 30 Rock star after he apparently read what Morgan actually said.

Tweeted Rock: “Tracy morgan is a tad off we all know that so when tracy says something i usually don’t take it anymore serious than i would a statement from gary busey or flavor flav. when i first heard the statement i thought it was offensive but it also reminded me of my father saying ill kill you if you ever bring home a white girl but after reading everything tracy said. wow i get it that s— wasn’t called for and i don’t support it at all. now can i please go to the tony awards without getting my ass kicked.”

The day before, Rock had tweeted: “I dont know about you, but I dont want to live in world where Tracy Morgan cant say foul inappropriate s—.” Morgan’s openly gay 30 Rock costar Cheyenne Jackson was more blunt: READ FULL STORY »
