Simon Cowell explains Cheryl Cole's departure from 'X Factor'

Hours after it was confirmed that British singer Cheryl Cole would not be part of either the British or American version of The X Factor, Simon Cowell said the show’s producers believed their decision “would be beneficial to her, funny enough,” according to the Associated Press.

Yesterday, Fox and producers announced that Cole was to be replaced on the network’s version of the show by Nicole Scherzinger, who will shift from co-host to judge. Cowell dismissed reports that Cole, who had already been a judge on the U.K’s X Factor, lacked chemistry with fellow judge Paula Abdul or that her accent was a hurdle for American audiences. “She was good on the American show,” Cowell said. “I personally thought she was missing her family and friends. She just looked a little bit, I wouldn’t say uncomfortable, but just not as happy as I’ve seen her on previous shows.”

Cowell said he’d texted Cole that he assumes “full responsibility,” and that he hopes his friendship with her remains solid. “I always, always would hold the door open to work with her again,” he said.

'Inside the Actors Studio': Watch the 'Modern Family' folks take James Lipton's infamous questionnaire -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

When the cast of Modern Family went Inside the Actors Studio (airing tonight on Bravo), it wasn’t just Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson who stared down James Lipton and his infamous blue index cards.

“In theory we had six people on stage, but only in theory,” Lipton tells EW. “We really had 12 people.” That’s because each of their characters showed up as well. Ever want to know what’s Gloria Delgado-Pritchett’s favorite word? Or what turns Cameron Tucker off? Look no further because EW exclusively presents James Lipton’s trademark variant on the Bernard Pivot Questionnaire with the cast (and characters) of ABC’s hit series.

Yankee haters, you’ll particularly appreciate Ty Burrell’s response to “What noise do you hate?” Check out the (occasionally NSFW) video after the break: READ FULL STORY »

MTV Movie Awards a hit with teens

Categories: Awards Shows, TV Ratings

Ratings for the MTV Movie Awards are in and — no surprise, it was a hit with teens. The show earned a 5.4 rating in the key demo (that’s a cumulative number across MTV, MTV2, VH1 and Logo), and an 8.3 rating among female teens. It was MTV’s largest audience of teens since 2004.

Among total viewers, it averaged 4.5 million.

Not all of those little pimple poppers stuck around for the Teen Wolf premiere, but the drama still pulled a pretty decent number. Part one of the two-parter earned a 2.1 rating among persons 12-34, and retained 68 percent of those teens with a 3.7 rating. Part 2 airs tonight. READ FULL STORY »

Discovery is taking the competition series to a new  extreme by pitting Special Forces and law enforcement personnel against each other in challenges that would be impossible for most reality TV contestants.

The network has ordered One Man Army, hosted by former Green Beret Mykel Hawke (Man, Woman Wild). Each episode features four new competitors, including men from the Navy Seals, Marines, Air Force, Army, U.S. Marshals Service, SWAT, and other law enforcement agencies, as well as top fighters from mixed-martial arts and other extreme sports.

The contestants compete in challenges like freeing themselves from a rope hanging them upside down, breaking through a series of walls, figuring out the best tactics to escape from a locked cell. The contestant with the slowest time will be eliminated until there’s only one man standing to claim at $10,000 prize. Buried in the announcement about Katie Couric’s talk show deal with ABC-Disney was the news that the Alphabet will be giving the last hour of daytime back to its affiliates in September 2012. That’s the hour currently occupied by General Hospital, which airs either at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. across the country. (Couric’s show, which will be syndicated, will air at 3 p.m. on the ABC owned-and-operated stations only). The entertainment conglomerate made a point to say that it still supports the sudser, but at this point it can’t say for certain whether the long-running soap will have a place on ABC’s daytime lineup 15 months from now. Ricky Gervais stands tall in 'Life's Too Short'

Categories: Cable, Television, The Office

Though his Golden Globes hosting gig rankled some in Hollywood, Ricky Gervais is back doing what he does best: playing power-forward for the Life’s Too Short lunchtime basketball team.

Kidding. The faux-documentary mastermind, who spent three seasons telling the story of Andy Millman and other little-known people on movie sets in Extras, is now tackling the lives of little little-known people in Life’s Too Short, which follows the rise and fall of a showbiz dwarf. Warwick Davis (pictured, front center) and Gervais play themselves, and you can expect Extras-style celebrity cameos — including Johnny Depp — when the show premieres on HBO after Christmas. Devoted Gervais fans will be even more delighted by the appearance of familiar faces from The Office and Extras playing themselves, adding to the new series’ realism.

Check out an exclusive photo of Gervais and Davis, after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Katie Couric has signed a multi-year, multi-platform agreement with ABC Television group, the company announced today.

Under the deal, Couric will host and produce a now-untitled nationally syndicated talk show that will premiere in September 2012, and will also join the ABC News team.

Additionally, Couric will reunite with Jeff Zucker,  the former NBC-Universal topper who will executive produce her new talk show that will be based in New York. Zucker exec produced Today when Couric was the co-anchor.

“I’m very happy to be returning to the network where I began my career as a desk assistant in 1979,” Couric said in a statement. “It is tremendously exciting to have the creative freedom to develop my own show.”

Already, eight of the ABC-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh/Durham and Fresno, which represent nearly 23% of the nation’s TV households, have already cleared Couric’s new show in the 3:00 p.m. time slot. As part of the announcement, ABC will return the last hour of its daytime network block to affiliates no earlier than September 2012, but says it continues to support General Hospital. (GH typically runs in that last hour, which is either 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.) It plans to launch The Chew in September of this year and The Revolution in January 2012.

More crazy news from Fox’s The X Factor. It was announced today that Nicole Scherzinger will replace Brit singer Cheryl Cole on the judging panel for the singing show. She will join Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul in their search to find another “global superstar” or group who could ultimately win a $5 million dollar recording deal.

Nicole has previously joined Cowell as a guest judge on The X Factor for the UK version of the show in 2010. She had filled in for Cole, who was a U.K. judge, too.

Cole was originally announced as part of the show’s U.S. judging panel last month, participated in early judging rounds, then was seemingly booted off. Over the last few days, however, news emerged that she was being offered another role on the show. READ FULL STORY »
