Keith Olbermann’s new Current TV program opened to a modest-sized audience Monday night, yet still topped CNN.

The host’s new Countdown delivered 179,000 viewers at 8 p.m. among adults 25 to 54, the preferred demo of the cable news networks. By comparison, Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor had 735,000 viewers in the demo. MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, who replaced Olbermann, drew 237,000 (Olbermann used to average roughly 300,000 in the demo on the network). One nice win for Olbermann: He beat CNN’s struggling Eliot Spitzer, who only had 89,000. READ FULL STORY »

AMC recently made a deal with showrunner Matthew Weiner to continue the retro drama for a couple more years, with a strong possibility of doing a third. Now it looks like the show is set to finish its run in a grand total of seven seasons now that sources confirm Hamm has inked a deal with producer Lionsgate TV for a trio of years. 'Futurama': A giant Patton Oswalt unleashes his wrath on New New York -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Categories: First Look, Television

Patton Oswalt is no longer just a comedy giant in the figurative sense. The comedian is voicing an unsightly 50-foot-tall human-like alien — call him “Unattractive Giant Monster” — that will wreak havoc all over “Benderama,” an episode of Futurama that airs Thursday night on Comedy Central. (“Benderama” airs at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, after “Neutopia” kicks off the second part of the animated comedy’s sixth season at 10 p.m.) The 35-word summary: The hot-headed UGM attacks the Futurama crew after Bender insults him. When he returns to apologize, he loses his cool, which ultimately leads to an epic showdown with a supersized Bender.

If you can’t wait until Thursday to see Oswalt in action, check out this clip in which UGM is insulted by Zap Brannigan before having one of his “temper-control incidents.” READ FULL STORY »

Terry O'Quinn joins 'Hawaii Five-0'

Categories: Casting, Hawaii Five-O

Terry-O-QuinnImage Credit: Insidefoto/PR PhotosTalented Lost veteran Terry O’Quinn has found his next TV gig, and he doesn’t even need to leave the Aloha State to do it.

O’Quinn has joined CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 in a recurring role, sources confirm (we were hoping O’Quinn would get hired to replace Laurence Fishburne on CSI, but alas… ). The actor will play a Navy Seal Lt. Commander who trained Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin). The move reunites O’Quinn with his former Lost co-star Daniel Dae Kim. O’Quinn starred in ABC’s pilot Hallelujah from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry that was aiming for a fall slot, but the show didn’t get picked up.

NBC will still air Tracy Morgan's 'Marriage Ref' episode on July 3

Earlier this month, Tracy Morgan caused a storm of controversy when he launched into an anti-gay tirade during a comedy show in Nashville, Tenn. (According to accounts, the 42-year-old joked that “if his son that was gay, he better come home and talk to him like a man … or he would pull out a knife and stab that little [n-----] to death.”) Since then, the actor/comedian — who has heard a fair share of opinions about his words from his Hollywood peers — has asked for forgiveness for his insensitive remarks, and is even making a personal appearance back in Nashville to apologize to the audience members of the now-infamous show and gay advocacy groups. Morgan is likely hoping his tour of contrition will reverse his public image since his rant — and NBC seems to be sticking by their 30 Rock star, for now.

While Jerry Seinfeld’s The Marriage Ref returns to the network this Sunday, June 26 with a season premiere that features Ricky Gervais and Julianne Moore, the July 3 episode may garner even more attention, since it will, in fact, feature Morgan. NBC confirmed to EW that the Morgan episode of The Marriage Ref, which also features guests Regis Philbin and Susie Essman, “is airing as scheduled.” READ FULL STORY »

Tracy Morgan, who’s spent the last week apologizing for a homophobic rant that culminated in him saying that he’d stab his own son if he acted gay, returned to the scene of the crime, so to speak, to apologize to the Nashville audience that attended his notorious performance. Morgan met with offended audience members at the Nashville Convention Center this morning, and later told reporters, “I just wanted to take this opportunity to help and not hurt,” according to the Associated Press. CBS inks new deal to keep Grammys

Categories:

The Grammys will stay on CBS through 2021.

The network closed a new deal with the Recording Academy to keep the awards show for another 10 years. The next kudofest will air on Feb. 12.  ”We are so pleased to continue our longstanding partnership with our friends at CBS, which has grown beyond our signature Grammy Awards event,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, in a statement.  ”We have consistently collaborated to ensure that a dynamic, fresh and diverse live telecast is presented, and we are proud of the collective growth and results we have achieved.  In recent years, we have worked diligently to develop new Grammy programming that celebrates music throughout the year and now, with many more nights of great music and television ahead of us, we look forward to continuing to expand our brand and partnership.”

In 2010, The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards averaged 25.8 million viewers, a 10.6 rating/24 share in adults 25–54, and a 9.9/24 in adults 18–49, which marked the best ratings in these key demographic categories since 2004.

'Game of Thrones' finale ratings hit series high

games_throne_2_320.jpg

Game of Thrones was a grower, not a shower.

After a relatively average launch of 2.2 million viewers, Thrones continued to edge higher in the ratings all season. With its tenth episode finale, Thrones hit a strong number that HBO had been targeting: 3 million viewers. Adding the show’s repeat at 11 p.m., a total of 3.9 million viewers tuned in. Though the Thrones premiere was harshly compared to the big debut of Boardwalk Empire, their finales were pretty close, with the Boardwalk closer delivering 3.3/4.2 million. Thrones continues to average 8.3 million viewers when you include all repeats, DVR and On Demand viewing. Guess those viewers pledging they would stop watching after Episode 9′s shocking event couldn’t stay away.
