'Mad Men,' 'Modern Family,' John Noble, and Christina Hendricks among Critics' Choice Award winners

The Critics’ Choice Television Awards — created by the recently established Broadcast Television Critics Association — were designed in part to be a counterpoint to the annual Emmy Awards (and the more established TCA Awards). The winners of the first annual CCTAs, however, echoed several Emmy winners of the recent past: AMC’s Mad Men took home Best Drama; ABC’s Modern Family won Best Comedy; Best Actress in a Comedy went to 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey; and The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons earned Best Actor in a Comedy.

The majority of winners, however, have not snagged an Emmy award — or, in some cases, even a nomination — but remain long-standing fan favorites.  READ FULL STORY »

Norm Macdonald on Comedy Central canceling 'Sports Show with Norm Macdonald': 'Maybe I'll ask them to bring it back'

Fans of Sports Show with Norm Macdonald are probably uttering a collective, “Wait, what?” today, as a Comedy Central spokesperson confirmed that the network will “not be moving forward with production on a new season of Sports Show.” The Macdonald-hosted comedy, which lampooned the world of sports, wrapped up its first season earlier this month, averaging 1.1 million viewers in the Tuesdays-at-10:30 p.m. slot.

Macdonald quipped to EW that he had not been “officially” informed of the bad news, noting, “A Minute with Stan Hooper is still officially on hiatus,” a reference to his short-lived 2003 Fox sitcom. He also said that he was open to hosting a similar-style program (“I like doing a funny show where I don’t have to act and fall in love with a girl”) and talked up “an Internet campaign to save the show, almost like they do with shows about witches and vampires and aliens from outer space…. Maybe I’ll call [the network] and ask them to bring it back. I’ll say, ‘Just bring it back. How much could it hurt television, really?’”

'The Glee Project' Exit Q&A: Ellis talks about tension with her fellow castmates

Oxygen’s The Glee Project said goodbye to its second contestant last night, the youthful-looking Ellis Wylie. The 19 year-old from Grayslake, Ill. was sent home after performing in the bottom three with Matheus and McKynleigh. “It was weird to watch it and to see how things got edited and how things work out because we have to cram so much into one show,” Ellis tells EW. “It was weird to watch yourself leave! But it was overall just a great experience and loads and loads of fun.” EW talked with Ellis about fighting with fellow contestant, Lindsay, and what’s next for her.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The judges seemed to think your attitude wouldn’t change and you would still be negative. What did you think of that? Did you think you’d be able to change?
ELLIS WYLIE: Well yeah, because I’m mostly not like that on a regular basis at all. I was really upset the first week. I was very depressed because my voice was down and I was sick. Part of my negativity is that I apologize a lot and that was something I think was getting on people’s nerves. So I think they really saw that. It’s unfortunate that I had this sad thing going for me. I didn’t really realize it but I was just in such a stressful position. I’m really not like that all the time. I understand where they’re coming from.  READ FULL STORY »

G4 takes late 'Jackass' star Ryan Dunn's 'Proving Ground' off schedule

Ryan Dunn was “just starting to break out on his own. Everyone was really proud of him.” That’s how Philadelphia morning talk show host Preston Elliot, who co-hosts 93.3 WMMR’s The Preston and Steve Show — which Dunn and his Jackass cohorts, many of whom hail from the region, often visited — is reflecting on the late star. (The 34-year-old died early in the early hours of Monday morning when he crashed his Porsche in West Goshen, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia. An unidentified passenger was also killed in the accident, which is still in preliminary investigation, but the West Goshen Police Department released a statement that said “excessive speed may have been a contributing factor.”)

The news of Dunn’s passing was first broken on the rock station’s morning program — Elliot reveals to EW that early Monday morning, the station became flooded with emails and texts from people in the area who had gotten word of Dunn’s death. (Elliott confirmed the news with April Margera, the mother of Dunn’s Jackass co-star Bam Margera.) And, tragically, there’s plenty of reason to mourn: Not only was Dunn something of a local hero from his early skateboarding days who was always willing to help out if the station was in a pinch for a celebrity guest spot (“I don’t think he ever said no,” Elliott tells EW), but Dunn was also experiencing some recent professional success, nabbing small roles in indie films and co-hosting a new series on G4 called Proving Ground. But now, the rest of Ground — a show which tested out wild video game and movie stunts in the real world, a perfect fit for the always-game Dunn — may not see the light of day. READ FULL STORY »

Rescue Me star Denis Leary has agreed to develop and co-write an American adaptation of the British television series, Sirens, for USA Network. In a press release, USA described the half-hour show as the “humorous antics and dramatic conflicts of young paramedics” who “fight and shag their way through the darkly funny maelstrom of their lives. Behind the uniforms, the sirens, and the incredibly fast driving, they are three ordinary blokes trying to make it through yet another shift. But once they’ve finished saving other people’s lives, they need to salvage their own.”

Co-writing with Leary is Bob Fisher (Wedding Crashers).

TNT's 'Falling Skies' is the year's most-watched cable premiere

Look out below! TNT’s alien invasion drama Falling Skies just became the most-watched cable series launch of the year.

Sunday’s two-hour premiere delivered 5.9 million viewers, with 2.6 million of those adults 18-49.

That’s the biggest cable debut since TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles (7.6 million) last summer, plus it edges out AMC’s The Walking Dead (5.3 million). As a fan of Jericho and the Terminator franchise, I found Skies a bit too familiar-feeling. I’m curious what the numbers will do next week. What did you think?

'Glee' scoop: Ryan Murphy says he's planning for the show's characters to graduate this season

Could some of Glee‘s most popular characters, like Lea Michele’s Rachel and Cory Monteith’s Finn, be seeing their final season on the Fox hit? Apparently so, according to an interview that series co-creator Ryan Murphy gave to Ryan Seacrest on Friday. There have been rumblings that the show’s seniors would indeed graduate from McKinley High at the end of season 3 and Murphy seemed to confirm that. Said Murphy, “That is true. I don’t think of it in terms of eliminating or replacing. Because I think the thing about this cast is people love them and they are incredibly talented. They’ve left sort of an indelible mark.” He added, “The thing that I wanted to do and the cast wanted to do, we didn’t want to have a show where they were in high school for eight years. We really wanted it to be true to that experience. We thought it would be really cool if we were true to the timeline.” READ FULL STORY »
