TNT gives series order to 'Dallas' reboot -- FIRST PHOTO

It’s official: TNT is bringing back Dallas, and with original series stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray.

The 1980s hit will get a modern makeover on the cable network, which just gave its new version of Dallas a 10-episode series order (full official description below). But you don’t have to wait until next summer, when the series debuts, to get a look at the show: TNT will give viewers a preview of the pilot on Monday night during the season premieres of The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles.

“TNT has explored the possibility of an updated version of Dallas for several years, but it wasn’t until we read Cynthia Cidre’s outstanding pilot script that we knew we had the foundation for a great new series,” said Michael Wright head of programming for TNT. “It is incredibly exciting to see both new and familiar characters in the hands of a dream cast.”

Here’s the description of the show from when the network announced the pilot:

The original Dallas aired from 1978 to 1991 and centered on the Ewing family, a cattle and oil dynasty occupying the expansive Southfork Ranch in Texas. The new version will focus on the Ewing offspring — J.R. Ewing’s son John Ross (Josh Henderson of Desperate Housewives), and Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby and Pam Ewing (Jesse Metcalfe of Desperate Housewives) — as they clash over the family dynasty’s future. Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious) stars as Elena, who is involved in a love triangle with Christopher and John Ross. Julie Gonzalo (Veronica Mars) stars as Christopher’s fiancée Rebecca. The updated Dallas will feature original series stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. Hagman gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of oil baron J.R. Ewing. Gray played J.R.’s wife Sue Ellen Ewing, while Duffy portrayed J.R.’s younger brother Bobby.

They could still bring lack Lucy Ewing, and even the Knots Landing crew, Gary and Val Ewing.

    • MD

yes the show needs a little lucy!

      • Johnny

I’ve seen more life in the cast of True Blood.

      • Larry Taint

        I Love Lucy!

      • nanail08

I strongly recommend you __ Black WhiteCupid℃○M for single black, white girls, men to meet true love online…… I know it from my friends since it really worked fo them….

      • Mrs.Crabtree

Lucy appeared in only 1 episode of Knots. I want Lucy too! And Gary! And Val! What about adding Bobby and Betsy Ewing into the mix!!!!

      • TraceyL

And most of the cast of True Blood is already dead!!! LOL!!

    • LISA G TAKES SHTS AT WORK!

Wow love love love the idea of bringing in some Knots characters! Knots, after all, is the BEST show EVER in the history of tv. I’m not too sure about the casting of the Desperate Housewives boys; Jessie Metcalf’s acting leaves a lot to be desired. Seems like producers were willing to overlook talent for name and/face recognition. Either way, I’m excited as hell!!!!!!!!!!

      • Lisa S

Lucy IS cast on the show. The EW writer was satisfied to cut and paste a Network press release rather than do a shred of research, but that’s EW for ya.
But the good news is… LUCY is coming back!

      • Curtis

        Yay!

      • Curtis

Well, if you want to get picky…. Charlene Tilton couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag. They just hired her because she was pretty, and because of that hair! But it still worked! Can’t wait!

      • BLT

Lisa G…I totally agree about @ Knots Landing. But, after all the work she has had done, I don’t know if I could look at Val for too long. Now, how could they work William Devane and Nic Sheridan into this?

      • GLAM

“Jessie Metcalf’s acting leaves a lot to be desired.”

He was really okay in DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES in his scenes with Eva Longoria. Metcalfe was even very good in LOADED – a rather not so good film.

      • LBK

Gary; Val etc…had nothing to do with Dallas really. The same would be true if there was a new Knots series – JR and Sue Ellen shouldn’t be on it. Gary and Val were on what 5 episodes? I’d much rather have the series have guest appearances of the series regulars during the show’s prime.

      • Mrs.Crabtree

I think they should throw Bobby and Betsy Ewing into the show. That would REALLY get JR’s goat — that his trashy sister in law Valene’s kids want a piece of the Ewing pie!

      • austin

yes i will do that to night

      • Dann

I completely agree that Knots Landing is the best that has even been on TV. It would be hard to get back what that show had back in the day. Not sure you can re-create Val’s sweetness against Abby’s mean. For sure the kids would need to play big parts. I always thought Olivia should have taken over for Abby in teh mean department. She was starting to come into her own. They would need her to make it great. I love Val, always have, too bad she has changed her looks so much!

    • Alan

What about JR’s adult son who he only met as an adult can’t remember his name (played by Sacha Mitchell)

      • GregR

        Sasha Mitchell played James Beaumont.

      • GLAM

I think it was clear that James Richard Beaumont and his family (his wife Debra Lynn and little son James Jr.) wanted to move back east to start a new life (S14E20)after his marriage to Michelle Stevens was dissolved. J.R. Beaumont and his family would make a great addition to the new DALLAS. However the character was introduced in the 13th season – his background is not very familiar to the majority of former DALLAS viewers because they’ve lost a lot viewers around that time.

      • WB

That’s true, but this show features plenty of characters we’ve never seen before, so bringing back some that were barely in it would hardly matter. In time they’ll probably want JR to have some more kids.

      • Richard

Maybe Jamesm Debra Lynn and Jimmy could make a guest appearance if the annual Ewing Barbecue is incorporated into the new series. And don’t forget JR’s third son by Callie. JR never pursued her or the boy.

      • Lidia Karpowska

I would love to see Sasha Mitchell
        back on Dallas

    • Curtis

I would love to see another love child of Kristen’s come back to play a villan!

      • GregR

Kristen only had that one bastard, I mean Christopher, then she was killed shortly thereafter.

      • JD

Is Christopher going to know who his real aunt and real mother was

    • Cher

Victoria Principal was the biggest pain the a$$ anyone ever worked with.

    • Pat De Joy

      I can’t wait!!! Loved Dallas – especially JR !!

    • stu

who knew jessie is a shorty?

    • janiejane

I sooooo loved Knots Landing. That has to be my favorite show of all times. The best cliff hangers and the ending of the series was pretty good as well

      • Mrs.Crabtree

Warner Brothers refuses to release any more Knots Landing seasons! They are holding the greatest tv show in the history of television hostage! Help! Help! Release Knots Landing from the prison that is the Warner Brothers vaults!

    • Ken

      WHERE IS VICTORIA PRINCIPAL?!

      • Anne

        Dead. They killed her off.

    • Meg

So basically this is recycling the cast of “Desperate Housewives”?

      • Michelle

Did you notice Mary Alice in the picture?

    • Mark Johnon

Maybe Lucy’s little brother and sister, Bobby and Betsy (who are now close to thirty) will show up

  • tomm

Pam ewing never really died, so Vicky P. can come back for a visit too.

    • satirex

Victoria Principal has never showed any interest in returning as Pam, but if they could get her, it would be a huge leg up. Her departure was the first big blow leading to the slow decline of the show (killing off Sheree Wilson as April was the final one).

      • LD

Victoria face looks so bad now it would fit right into the story of her getting messed up in that crash/explosion.

      • tim

so ture—her face is hideous–what an awesome idea!

      • Curtis

Actually, forget Victoria. Since she was “disfigured” really anyone could comeback to play Pamela. I think they should look into that.

      • MN

I worked with Victoria Principal on her skin cream infomercials. She is not someone you would want to work with if you had a choice.

      • Matt

Well, you can see Brenda Strong next to Patrick Duffy — and this announcement didn’t say anything about her. Could it be possible that she’s playing Pam?

      • GregR

The show was never the same after Jock died. But the season when Bobby left was the start of the decline. When he came back, then Sue Ellen left and then it was all downhill. No, that lady next to Bobby is not Pam. You know the Ewing men get replacement wives all the time. I couldn’t stand that April.

      • Joe

Forget Victoria Principal, they should get Ted Shackleford and Joan Van Ark to bring their kids onto the show to make trouble for Jr and Jon Ross.

    • LISA G TAKES SHTS AT WORK!

@tomm, nah she’s making too much money with her skin creams! It would be nice to have her back though. And what about that nutcase brother of hers— Cliff Barnes? LOL. Is that character still alive?

      • Curtis

I think he’s still alive, but looks like hell. I doubt they or he would even be interested in entertaining that idea.

    • JD

Did you bother to watch one episode where after cliff visits Pam her doctor fiance said Pam only had a few months left to live. That is why Pam won’t be coming back. Its like bringing Bobby back from the dead and bringing back the original Miss Ellie. That show wouldn’t last long if Pam was brought back.

      • calebjones

That didn’t stop them from bringing back Bobby! This time it could be Pam who walks out of that shower!

  • Lem

Jordana Brewster?!?! I love her…I’ll watch just for her. LOL.

  • diane

Aren’t Rebecca and Christopher related? I know not by blood, but still they are “cousins”.

    • Retro

      Please explain?

      • Lisa S

Please don’t use question marks at the end of non-questions.

      • LD

Lisa S, Please don’t be a jacka$$. I guess you just need a little attention. Did mommy not love you enough?

      • amy amrap

LD, please become literate. Don’t you love yourself enough?

      • LOL

        Meow, Biotches.

    • scorpo

It might just be another character named Rebecca. Although, if it is the same Rebecca they would only be related by marriage as Christopher is adopted.

      • Miffy

This Rebecca is not the daughter of Afton and Cliff – it’s a new character.

    • Richard

Don’t know of this Rebecca is the same Pamela Rebecca Barnes, the daughter of Cliff Barnes and Afton Cooper. The first Dallas reunion movie had Christopher and Pamela Rebecca meet and eventually Cliff met her and Bobby realized who she was. It was unclear if Christopher was informed. Anyway, no they are not related by blood since Christopher was adopted.

      • mallah

Christopher is the son of Kristen, who is the sister of Sue Ellen. John Ross and Christopher are first cousins. Since Cliff is the brother of Pamela, Christopher is not blood related to Pamela Rebecca Barnes.

    • mallah

John Ross and Christopher are related by blood. Sue Ellen and Kristen(Christopher’s mother) are sisters making the two first cousins.

  • JJ

I actually think this can work. It’s a solid premise and doesn’t try to remake the original or make it into an embarrassing attempt at “comedy” as they did with the proposed Travolta/J-Lo big screen version.

The casting so far is solid so they’re avoiding any Melrose Place Ashlee Simpson-Wentz disasters.

I’ll watch the first two…can’t wait to see those Hagman/Gray sparks!

    • Curtis

Agreed! Can’t wait! Oh, and LOL on the Ashley comment!

  • Yolanda

I’m stoked! This is exactly what we need right about now : a primetime soap done right! And who knew that Jordana Brewster was going to be a part of this? #winning

  • orville

Wow–it doesn’t look like Linda Grey has aged at all!

And according to IMDB, Charlene Tilton is in the cast as Lucy. And isn’t that Brenda Strong in the picture? IMDB has her playing Ann Ewing–Bobby’s new wife perhaps?

    • Michelle

Linda Grey hasn’t aged thanks to a good plastic surgeon.

  • Chloe

    Count me in.

    • Shaheen

The key thing that the Ewing Theory illustrates is that if you are going to pin your hopes on one guy, that guy had beettr be a legitimate superstar. Your role players will often play beettr in a more equal-opportunity offense, but if your focal point is way, way beettr than your role players you will be beettr off running it through him. Ewing, while excellent, was never dominant enough to make this trade-off worthwhile. The obvious counter-example is Lebron James with the Cavaliers. They were great with him, awful without him. Lebron was so much beettr than his peers that it made sense to run things through him. With Florida, I think this year has proved that their offensive system and methods of developing talent matter at least as much as the dominance of any one player like Brodie Smith or Kurt Gibson. The identity of “the man” appears to matter less than the fact that they deliberately train players to take on that role. A team that practices more of an equal opportunity offense, on the other hand, is likely to suffer if at a tournament they try to run things through one guy.

  • LD

Why does IMDB have the date 2013?? Are they really waiting that long?

    • Lisa S

What part of NEXT SUMMER (ie. 2012) didn’t you understand in the article?

      • LD

Looking at your comments, your a smarta$$. This article could be wrong! I bet you have a lot of friends.

    • GLAM

The date is not exactly correct. However the first new DALLAS episodes will be shown in the 2012-13 TV season. So it’s half correct.

    • Debbie

If they wait very long to bring the show back,The older actors will all be dead. These actors aren’t getting any younger, and neither am I.

  • jb

This is Dallas: Desperate Housewives Edition.

    • Wha’ever

      My thoughts exactly !

  • Troy

How many more “Desperate Housewives” actors do they plan to employ? Mary Alice is in that picture too.

    • Curtis

I think Brenda Strong is PERFECT for Bobby’s new wife. Love, love, love her!

      • miss mar

Brenda strong guessstarred on the Original series

    • CrazyCool

Nicolette Sheridan can’t be too far behind. She was on the original Dallas spin off, Knots Landing.

      • GregR

Knot’s Landing was not Dallas. There’s no place for William Devane, Nicolette Sheridan or Michele Lee. Maybe Gary and Val could return.

  • Annie

Looks like the deSORASed John Ross and Christopher abit, cause I remember them being in their early teens in the late 1980′s. Technically, they should be in their mid 30′s. Any, love for J.R.’s nemesis Cliff Barnes to return.

    • tomm

‘Dallas’ never suddenly aged John Ross or Chris. Same with Gary and Val’s twins on ‘Knots’.

      • Annie

Technically, John Ross should be 32 years old because he was born in 1979. Omri Katz who played John Ross as a child is 35 years old and Henderson is 30. I just thought they cast the character according to age Katz last played him in those 1990′s tv movies.

  • Kevin

is that Brenda Strong? The bra-less wonder returns!

    • George Semel

Yep its going to be choice, I wonder if they will get Jackie Childs as there Lawyer!! I bust a gut every time I see an O’Henry Candy Bar.

  • tomm

Good that Bobby is with an age appropriate wife.

There are others that could pop up, Sasha Mitchell could come back as JR’s son to challange John and Chris.

And even Val and Gary’s twins, who are now 20s, can come back to make trouble.

    • Lisa S

      Castrated much?
A guy whining about a lack of age-appropriateness in couples?

      • Jimmyjazz

If he was not before, he is now. But that was funny, especially coming from a woman…

  • tomm

Another thing, I hope Jesse Matcalfe doesn’t curse the show, he’s bombed in anything since ‘D. Housewives’.

    • Lisa S

He’s bombed in everything INCLUDING Desperate housewifes. He’s a crap actor, plain and simple.

      • Truth Hurtz

Hey Lisa S, dial it back a couple of notches will ya’? The world is crappy enough without all of your sh!tty comments. Sheesh.
