Emmys: Walton Goggins on Emmy nod for 'Justified' (not 'The Shield')

For fans of The Shield, today’s nomination for Walton Goggins probably felt ridiculously past due. The actor never got the attention he deserved for co-starring as Det. Shane Vendrell in the FX cop drama The Shield, but he was no less thrilled about today’s nod from the TV Academy for his portrayal of Boyd Crowder in the cabler’s Justified. The drama earned four nominations in all, including one for star Timothy Olyphant.

Ironically, Goggins admits that he was “deep in sh–” when he learned of his nomination. Yep, he was changing his child’s diaper when he got the call. Goggins gave us the tick-tock: “I woke up at 5:15, got a cup of coffee, sat down at 5:30, watched the broadcast, yelled when they said Tim’s name, started screaming, my son wakes up, he’s screaming for completely different reasons, fiancée wakes up, we’re dealing with the baby, changing the diaper, and I get the call. I was deep in sh–!

“I woke up out of respect for the Academy and the actors and the sheer possibility,” Goggins continued. “I got so excited when Tim was nominated, I kind of forgot that it was even a possibility for me. It was like watching my buddy Michael Chiklis getting nominated way back for The Shield. So I was thinking about calling Tim so I kind of forgot. The work being done in TV right now, and really, during the past 10 years, has been so good. I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity from actor’s standpoint with these two shows. And now to be invited to the party in this way? I hope they don’t rescind the invitation.”

I was totally creeped out by Boyd Crowder and I wanted to punch him in the head everytime he was on screen. And then he went all creepy religious. Nice job Walton, well deserved nom.

Is it weird that I found that strangely attractive?! He’s great and I love the character. I’m just glad that Justified is getting some attention!

      • Andy

and by that I mean his religious whack job performance not your desire to punch him in the head.

  • SHELLY

Love his a Boyd and loved his as Shane Vendrell. He really deserved a nod for The Shield expecially in the last season.

  • SHELLY

    correction especially not expecially

  • Bella

He was fantastic. Everyone on this show was. All of the nominations were richly deserved.

  • Kiki

So happy for his nomination, as well as Timothy Olyphant’s. I wish the show had been recognized as well.

  • kate middleton

Totally deserved this nomination. So psyched that Timothy Olyphant got nominated too. And I predict Margo Martindale wins – her performance as Mags Bennett was nothing short of amazing.

Totally agree with you on all points!

Cletus Van Damme! It’s about time…

It’s about time – Goggins has been doing incredible work on The Shield for years (especially the final season) and sadly was never nominated. I’m glad he’s finally getting some long overdue recognition.

Walt is fantastic as Boyd Crowder on Justified and I consider him to be one of the finest actors in television. He always keeps the audience on their toes, you never quite know what to expect from him.

Late or not, the nomination is well-deserved. I cannot take my eyes off of Goggins whenever he is onscreen. He is all at once frightening, evil, conflicted, moral, loving and sexy. The relationship he and Olyphant have evolved is so complicated and real. Truly amazing work that should be lauded. His comments just demonstrate the commitment of the Justified cast to making amazing television together, not as individual stars.

Thrilled that he was finally recognized for his amazing work. I’m stoked about Margo Martindale too!

I felt he really deserved it for Season one. His Boyd was a very complex villian and when he turned religious and sincere, it made his malevolence even more terrifying. Well deserved.

  • side3

Agreed. Well deserved. Walton makes a bad guy likeable. He really lights up the screen wheever he appears.

Very psyched for Boyd Crowder. I’ve never watched The Shield, despite hearing how awesome it is, so I only know this actor from Justified. A lot of TV I watch while I’m doing other things, but Justified is the type of show that deserves full attention. Writing, acting and the story progression is top notch. I frequently suggest the show to people b/c I think it’s so great.

    • Dano

      Agree 100%.

  • DavidJ

Only know him from Justified, but despite playing a bad guy he always comes across as such a decent and likeable guy at heart.

So jazzed to see him nominated.

  • bobbi

Loved that Crowder got nominated, but was hoping that John Noble got the nom too.

    • TQB

I agree – I’m trying to be pleased that they at least got some things right. Overlooking Noble AGAIN is really just embarrassing.

  • Laura Lee

He deserves the nomination and so does Timothy Olyphant.
I do feel however, that they show was snubbed for best drama series, and feel that Justified should have been nominated in place of the good wife or friday night lights. Just my opinion, but I’ve watched FNL and the good wife, and feel that both shows are great in their own right, but are not better then Justified. Justified is hands down one of the best shows this season, and the quality of the acting, and story telling surpasses that of FNL and the Good Wife.
This is the last season of FNL, and I do feel that this is the reason for the shows nomination.
