Sara Bareilles joins 'The Sing-Off' as celeb judge

Sara Bareilles will show up on The Sing-Off this fall as a celebrity judge. The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter will join fellow celeb judges Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman on the panel when the show returns Sept. 19.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining the panel of judges for The Sing-Off this fall,” says Bareilles in a statement. “A cappella music is very near and dear to my heart, and I have been a huge fan of the show from the beginning. I love the opportunity to be a part of something that celebrates a genre of music that I just adore and believe in. I can’t wait for it to start.”

Bareilles, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, released her platinum selling major label debut “Little Voice” in 2007. The album’s first single “Love Song,” was a hit in 22 countries, including the Billboard Hot100. It garnered a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year before going multi-platinum.

Great news! I love the show and love her music.

I do not like this show, but I love B-Reilles and Ben Folds, and if it gives them exposure, then that is definitely not a bad thing.

sad that this show gets rid of wooden nicole while x factor picks her up. sigh. wishing sarah well. like the show and like her.

I think this is a great choice for a judge for this show. I think she even performed on the show last season. I can’t wait for the season to start.

Why is the actree from The Killing on a singing show?

    • Andie

      Umm, no?

  • Hum

So, a one-hit wonder? At least Paula Abdul had six # 1 hits and sold over 20 million albums. Bareilles has had exactly one top five hit and…that’s pretty much it.

    • Rach

@Hum– While she may not have had many mainstream hits, her albums are fantastic and talent is undeniable. She’s light years ahead of Paula Abdul talent-wise. She’ll be a great addition to the show.

    • Tarc

Bareilles has had a lot more than one hit song. Read much… or listen much?

      • @Tarc

“Bareilles has had a lot more than one hit song”

Um…not really. A cursory look at her singles discography shows that her singles have performed thusly on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “Love Song” # 4 peak; “Bottle It Up” #107 peak “Gravity” Failed to chart “King of Anything” #32 peak “Uncharted” #116 peak. So therefore, only one hit single. Thus, a one-hit wonder. Buh-bye.

@ @tarc : you can no longer go by radio and charts to find what’s a “hit” anymore. radio time is bought by record companies and drone tweensters buy the WORST music ever, (LMFAO anyone? what a joke). you now have to be the judge on your own. i refuse to look to radio or charts for good music, it just isn’t there.

      • Hum@yes

If you are looking for “good music”, by all means, talk about whatever song you like. if you are talking about HITS, actual hits, then that’s not subjective. A hit is a song that was played on the radio a lot, sold a lot of singles/downloads, and therefore reached a high peak on the charts. Whether the song is “good” or “bad”, a HIT is a HIT, and Bareilles has only had one.

Because having multiple mainstream hits = legit musician… Right… At least, Sara B has actual a cappella experience and is a kickass singer/songwriter.

    • jones

Even using your standards to judge talent (which are flawed), she is still very young and will likely have more hits and more quality records.

      • Jonesy

LOL She’s released plenty of songs as official singles post-”Love Song” and none of them have been hits. She’s proven that she may be talented, but she simply doesn’t appeal to the masses. She’s right there in the pile of One-Hit Wonders, next to James Blunt, Estelle, Soulja Boy, Katrina and the Waves, Toni Basil and Nena.

This is the best replacement i could ever imagine! I hate that Nicole SO MUCH. And Ben Folds and Sarah Bareilles are the BEST!!!

  • Value Vocals

Sara got her start singing contemporary a cappella in college and still performs periodically with other professional groups such as Sonos (YouTube has videos). FANTASTIC choice, and I look forward to the back and forth between her and Ben this season.

  • hg

    AMAZING CHOICE

  • J

I was hoping they’d pick her! So incredibly awesome news!

  • Justsayin

Who? Is she the latest sarah mclachlan clone this yr?

  • Emilly

As a huge fan and follower of Sara Bareilles, I think it’s safe to say that she’s perfect for this job. She hasn’t had “hits” because she is in it for the love of music, not the love of money. She is her own artist and doesn’t conform to the styles of today’s Top 20 radio… and thank God for that, have any of you heard the radio lately? There’s no way I would be comfortable with any of those artists as the judge on an a capella singing show. Sara has history with the style of a capella, and she has more knowledge of music than the top 10 artists of today’s chart put together. Do your homework before you go insulting, please. She’s a perfect fit. :)
