Ryan Murphy's 'American Horror Story' gets FX series order

Glee creator Ryan Murphy is getting another series off the ground. No surprise here, but FX is set to pick up his American Horror Story for 13 episodes.

The series follows a husband and wife (Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton) who move their family to San Francisco in an attempt to rebuild their family after a miscarriage and affair — except the house is haunted.

Also in the cast: Taissa Farmiga as their Goth daughter and Jessica Lange as a next-door neighbor with knowledge about the house. Horror has been traditionally very tough to make work on TV… but then again, so have musicals, right?

UPDATE: FX officially announced the project and plans to debut the series in October (taking a cue from AMC’s strategy with The Walking Dead):

Here’s the network’s description:

American Horror Story revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish. The All Star cast features Dylan McDermott (The Practice) as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) as “Vivien Harmon,” Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as “Violet,” the Harmon’s teenage daughter; Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky, Grey Gardens) in her first-ever regular series TV role as “Constance,” the Harmon’s neighbor; Evan Peters (One Tree Hill) as “Tate Langdon,” one of Ben’s patients; and Denis O’Hare (The Good Wife) as “Larry Harvey.” Guest stars for the series include Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) and Alexandra Breckenridge (Dirt) as the Harmon’s housekeepers; and Jamie Brewer as Constance’s daughter.

Are you sure Vera Farmiga is playing their daughter?

    • Lindsay

Yeah, I am pretty sure Vera Farmiga is really close in age with those two actors…I think there may have been a typo. oops!

      • AndyA

Definitely a typo. I think he meant Taissa Farmiga.

    • Amanda

yeah, Vera Farmiga isn’t even listed as being in this on IMDB.

    • Dawn

      No. It’s Vera’s sister Taissa.

    • karoline

The network’s description says Taissa Farmiga.

  • Thad

Isn’t Vera like 35?! as their daughter?

  • Simon

I know isn’t Vera like the same age as Britton?

  • Kristen

I think it’s Taissa Farmiga, her younger sister.

  • Kevin

The series is about a sinister TV-series creator/producer who creates brilliant and popular shows only to purposely turn them into silly, non-sensical parodies of themselves after the first season.

THIS. Prepare for this thing to be a hot mess if Ryan Murphy is involved. Connie Britton deserves better.

    • Mo

Snark (which was very funny) aside, I just don’t see how they can keep up a haunted house story for several seasons. Unless it’s a benign entity haunting the house (which it wouldn’t be, since it’s billed as horror), how can they sell us the idea of a family staying in a haunted house through however many seasons this goes on?

  • e

    Taissa Farmiga

  • chad

“I think our house is haunted, y’all.” Excited to see Connie Britton back on TV.

    • Molly

      Hahaha yes!

  • JCK

The network description clearly says Taissa Farmiga, so yeah, EW, proofread better and change your actress information.

    • Anonymous

EW is horrible at proofreading and they make typos consistently. Grammar typos excluded, many of their writers, especially Mr. Hibberd and Ms. Rice, make so many typos I have to wonder if they failed English 101.

Especially when it’s about shows they clearly don’t give a rats ass about. No mistakes in the Glee/Bachelor reporting.

  • Daniel Montgomery

Ryan Murphy gets an opportunity to make bad horror after making a bad musical. Hope he doesn’t stretch his lack of talent too thin. More important I hope Connie Britton survives it if its quality is on par with Murphy’s previous efforts.

  • Ed

Yeah, EW, this is pretty sad reporting. In addition to the above mistakes, your description of the show says they move to San Fran., but the network description you provide says Los Angeles. This is Reporting 101: read your sources! So sad.

  • jimmy

    Will the ghosts be gay?

    • kate middleton

      HAHAHA. This is great.

  • Donna

<3 Connie Britton! I would watch her read a phone book! Can not wait!

  • Alice

Wow seriously after the lackluster plots on Glee I have no interest, and I really used to be a former Glee fan. Yet, I am sure Murphy will mess this up. Nip Tuck certainly started well, but went bad quickly also.

  • Jackie V

As soon as I read Ryan Murphy, I said “passed”. I’m sure it will suck.

  • adam

1 good season and then it will turn to sh*t.
