'Love Bites' creator on Thursday's finale: 'It felt like a successful little miniseries'

In the beginning, Love Bites on NBC showed so much promise — a dramedy-anthology featuring popular stars like Becki Newton and Greg Grunberg that creator Cindy Chupack described as Love, American Style meets Love Actually. Unfortunately, a bad combination of too many cooks (it went through three regime changes at NBC) and an ambitious conceit (new stars every week!) ended up side-lining the show. Chupack also reduced her role to that of a consultant because she had a baby on the way.

The series finally got a spot on NBC’s schedule this summer, but the die had already been cast: Thursday’s eighth episode will be its last. Fortunately, Chupack has no regrets — though she does hope that people judge Love Bites fairly (and with a little kindness).

“My feeling was if only it could have been positioned as a summer treat miniseries instead of a show that was burned off and canceled,” Chupack said of Love Bites (which has only averaged 2.45 million viewers this summer). “I feel like it was a successful little miniseries. It had amazing costars, and did something very different.”

Thursday’s finale will feature appearances by Newton, as well as Michelle Trachtenberg, Bret Harrison and Matt Long. She was glad NBC took a risk on a complicated conceit that involved introducing new characters on a weekly basis. (The show can be found on Hulu). It was like writing three mini-pilots a week, Chupack said.

“Considering everything that happened, including with me stepping down, it felt like it turned into such a delightful show,” said Chupack, who has since joined the writing staff of ABC’s Modern Family. “I hope it won’t be measured by when finally aired, or by how many episodes aired or whether it was a success or failure. Rather, was it just fun to watch and was it good?”

Good for her to take the high road…though I can’t help but think that she left because she knew it was destined to fail. Either way, it was a fun summer miniseries!

I really enjoyed the show. I loved trying to figure out how everyone was connected. It was a good concept. I hope someone will try it again in the future

I did too! It reminded me of Love Actually! I really enjoyed all of the story lines and didn’t even care that the characters rotated.

Sad to see this go. I absolutely loved it! One of the few shows that made me laugh. ITA – a fun summer miniseries!

I enjoyed this show very much, and was shocked to hear that this week’s episode was the series finale. Love Bites had a lot going for it … good stories, actors, great writing for the most part. Although I really shouldn’t be shocked anymore at these abrupt show cancellations seeing as how networks just don’t invest any effort and time into shows anymore and treat audiences with complete disdain these days. It’s pathetic.

      AMEN.

It was a great show for summer and wished it could come back! Love Becki Newton and Greg Grunberg

I thought it was fun, too. But we do have to remember that we are talking about NBC here. They like nothing better than reality show junk. Their summer schedule is mind-numbing!

While some of the mini stories worked, others didn’t, but my favorite so far was Bret Harrison (I thought Breaking In was very funny and its a shame it got cancelled) and Michelle Trachenberg. Nothing is given a chance anymore.

    I still miss Perfect Couples

I really enjoyed this show and am sad to see it go — I think 2.5 million viewers is pretty good for a summer show

Loved this show. Sad to see it go. Probably partly my fault as I only watched it online/On Demand. But I wish they considered doing another 10 eps next summer, or every summer. That would have made me happy.

Sad to see the show go. I REALLY liked it, especially the premise. I thought it weaved in the guest stars and regulars great. And I absolutely loved that you didn’t have to watch every episode to understand or enjoy a single episode. if this was promoted better more people would have watched. 2.5 mill is still good for a summer show with no promotion. NBC keeps shooting itself in the foot. It would be funny except good shows are losing out.

You know Cindy if you’re reading this, kudos to you for trying something new! I’ve watched them all, and I have to say the series had some of the funniest laugh-out-loud moments of any recent show (not to mention some of the more risque scenes and plots)! It was also very clever how all the stories for any specific show intersected near the end. Maybe not every vignette worked but most of them did. Definitely summer fun!

I love Greg Grunberg in whatever he does! Too bad this was short lived. I thought there were 9 episodes. Or are there unaired episodes?

I really liked this show. I know it had some trouble getting off the ground, but as I’ve been watching it I’ve been hoping that it would get picked up for a regular season spot. Too bad. The story lines are funny and cute and the actors have been great. Love Becky Newton.

Sorry, I was so unimpressed by the first episode, that I never watch it — maybe give it another try on-line

    • Jennifer in Kansas

I thought the first episode was the best. I’m sad to see the show go. I was unware that it was cancelled until after I went to Hulu for two weeks in a row and seeing that there are no new episodes.
