USA boss talks at Comic-Con about a possible seventh season of 'Psych'

Psych‘s season 6 doesn’t even have a solid premiere date yet (ETA: October), but at today’s Comic-Con panel in San Diego, the stars and production team had a positive outlook on the future of TV’s most spoof-friendly series, especially when creator Steve Franks spoke about the show’s plans for a musical episode.

“I’m a big liar because I promised [the fans] that the episode that shoots Monday was going to be the musical, but then I realized that you can’t write a musical in three weeks,” he told the crowd. “So it’s going to be the first episode of season 7.”

Exciting — except the show hasn’t been picked up for a seventh season. But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be, according to USA Network co-president Jeff Wachtel, who spoke to EW after the panel.

“I think if they have enough stories, as James [Roday] said in the panel, who knows how many. But we’re not sure yet,” he said. “The sixth season doesn’t start until October, but the guys are amazing. I can see it running forever.” Especially, he said, if Psych‘s key demographic continues` moving in the right direction.

“One of the amazing things about the show right now is that the most important demographic is 18-49 year olds, and a lot of the people who fell in love with Psych when they were 13 or 14 are in that demo. It was an amazing thing when we did the college tour last year because it was cool to see how it was a big event for the campuses when we came. So it’s just renewing the audience,” he said. “And if that keeps happening, and they want to keep telling the stories, you want to keep doing it.”

I am so missing Psych right now. I need some Gus in my life like whoa.

  • Rebecca

8 months without Psych has been difficult. I don’t know how to go another 2!

    • Psych

I feel your pain. Watch old episodes during your wait, or read fanfics.

      • Yonah

I know the problem is that I have seen all the old episodes I can recite them by heart

  • Lassie

I am 28! My husband is 27! We LOVE Psych. Please renew it for a 7th season! We have all the DVDs, I’ve literally watched all the episodes with commentary (which is always pretty hilarious), and I would kill for a Psych musical. As evidenced by some of the Psych-outs, they’ve got some good singers in the cast – it would be pretty kickass. And I can’t believe I have to wait another couple months for more Psych. It’s LIT-rally one of my favorite shows currently on TV…can’t wait for new episodes!

#1 In my book!! Psych is a quick wit and intelligent banter
gold mind , and this is not from a demographic of just
    young folks, I’m 65yo!!!

  • Tiffany

If Psych is cancelled without a musical episode I’m going to lose my mind! We NEED a musical episode! It’s been teased practically since the show started!

I heard someone suggest James Roday as Peter Venkman for Ghostbusters 3. How epic would that be? As long as James didn’t outgrow Psych and it can continue for 4 or 5 more seasons!!! Psych FTW! Emmy voters, HELLOOOOOO?? Anyone out there? Bueller?

    • Ciara

Nicely done…I know they did a John Hughes tribute episode, with a name inspired by Ferris Bueller…but I wan Shawn Spencer’s Day Off. And I want it NOW.

  • Stacmac

I’m in the key demo…barely….47. This show is the funniest and most enjoyable on TV by far. I hope it goes at least 10 seasons. And if USA net ever dropped it…another should pick it up. Dule Hill, James Roday, Corbin Bernson and the entire cast is just terrific!

  • Ydog

I’m 13 I have been watching psych for two years and my friends think I’m weird because I know psych so well, if they cancel it I will have to memorize every episode by heart and just be sad. Shawn and Gus all the way.

  • James

I’m 54 and my son is 14. Psych gets him away from his video games. He comes running when I tell him the show is starting. We won’t miss an episode. Let’s go season 6!

  • Joy

We are a family of Psych lovers – aged 17 to 50 ! Please don’t ever take Psych away. We bought all the seasons on DVD and have last season still on the DVR. Best Show EVER …

  • Michelle

I have watched Psych from the first (pilot) episode and I own the DVD seasons; I have had SEVERE Psych withdrawals waiting this long between seasons is causing me anxiety and depression…I NEED MY SHAWN, GUS, & THE GANG FIX NOW!!! It is THE BEST show on TV by far; and it’s my favorite show on TV! I know all the old episodes, but I NEED my show back…it will be almost a year when the first episode of Season 6 starts!!! What took so long this time around between seasons? I can’t wait til October, which I don’t think I’ve ever said that before since we live in Michigan! No matter how hard my day has been, or even if I am sad for some reason, when Psych comes on…I ALWAYS laugh, no matter what! I hope Psych stays on for many more seasons! And I also hope they never torture us to wait this long for a Season Opener again!
