'Family Guy' producer makes Amy Winehouse joke at Comic-Con

Too soon? Just hours after the news broke that Amy Winehouse had died at the age of 27, executive producer Mark Hentemann mentioned her passing during Fox’s Family Guy panel at Comic-Con. Introducing members of the cast and writers onto the stage, Hentemann asked them if anyone knew whether or not Winehouse was still alive. The audience, in turn, appeared confused — some laughed, some “Oooh”-ed.  Mike Henry, sang a bit of “Rehab” in character, and a seemingly shocked Seth MacFarlane took the stage and quickly asked Hentemann if he had asked anyone about that joke before going on. Writer and producer Steve Callaghan appeared to learn the news of Amy Winehouse while up on stage.

The mood in Ballroom 20 quickly recovered and turned to the undeniably funny: Family Guy showed clips from the upcoming season — which will include Quagmire hitting on Meg, a drug trip that goes horribly wrong for Brian, and even a little bit of clown porn — and announced Ricky Gervais would voice a dolphin in an upcoming episode, with Cate Blanchett and Ryan Reynolds also due to appear in future episodes. They also had a bit of good-natured fun with the sign-language translator who was working towards the front of the stage, asking the woman to re-sign the words for ‘s**t’, ‘bulls***t’ and ‘filthy floppy hobo penis’. Funny in any language?

Unironically “too soon”. I’m sure her family will find it hilarious when Mark “keepin it classy” Hentemann dies too.

    • Buster

“Amy Winehouse found slightly more dead today than yesterday.”
^That should have been the headline all over the news today.

      • mike hanson

        okay Buster that was funny

      • Buster’s Proud Parents

Actually that was pretty funny. Yes, it’s sad and unfortunate that she died, but it’s not nearly as sad as the reckless and tragic way she lived. That’s how Amy will be known, and that will always overshadow her musical ability. Oh, and can someone finally go put a gun to BF-C’s forehead and pull the trigger? This is mostly his fault.

      • Tom

Family Guy is like my moral compass. Just more funny.

      • AcaseofGeo

Like Seth McFarland is one to be sensitive and appropriate. That show is tasteless, inappropriate and mean spirited. I’m not saying it is a BAD show; I’m just saying what it is, so he has no one to blame for any backlash.

      • seth

        it’s worth it

      • Holly

The guy’s comment is quintessentially American. When someone is going to leap from a bridge, the rest of the world tries to talk them down. The American pulls out his cellphone camera and yells “jump!”

      • Mr. Wolf

Yes, Holly. Because the rest of the world is oh, so much more civilized than we are here. You stay classy Norway and Syria!

      • Dinjab

Yes, Mr. Wolf. Syria and Norway are one in the same. May you get rectal cancer.

    • Tom

I LOVE FAMILY GUY EVEN MORE NOW!!!

      • Lisa S

You love having a hot poker rammed up your behind as well, Tom. But we don’t care about that either.

      • seth

hey, it’s just a joke. no need to be threatening people you jerk off

      • Lisa S

Oh wait a minute. It’s ME who likes to have the hot poker rammed up my behind. What was I thinking?

      • Pittner

The only people that love Family Guy are the same idiots who watch Fox News.

    • James S.

Unironically? Wow. Even ninth-grade grammar students are laughing at you.

      • Lisa S

This article is a disjointed mess. Weak all around.

      • PK

Uh why? You do know that’s a word right?

    • Abe Froman

The only surprising thing about her death is that it didn’t happen sooner.

      • Squishmar

        Abe!! The Sausage King speaks!

  • Krusty

Seriously, who cares. She’s dead and all, and that within of itself is sad. But yesterday 92 people (young one who did NOT do drugs like Amy) lost their lives and suddenly, as a culture that looks to be suffering from ADHD, we shift our attention to this one singer who we all knew and watched while she was on a destructive path. AND we read stories and buy magazines about her destructive path. Then we act in outrage and awe when we realize that person died. Society sometimes is dumb.

    • Pan

We SHOULD care she was so young and troubled like so many are. Sad to see people only thinking of themselves and not of others.

    • Churble

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking. A woman who’s been trying to kill herself for years finally pulled it off, and it’s bigger news than nearly 100 children being murdered? It kind of makes you sick.

      • Fatima

Look, there’s no finite amount of grief a person can have.

      • Lois

Amy Winehouse is bigger news on this site because this is an entertainment site. But if you look at real news, Norway is a bigger story.

      • Ryden

This couldnt of been anymore true. Up until today, I had totally forgot this lowlife existed. Use your thoughts and prayers for the young children that lost their lives, not this idiot who like it was meantioned has been trying to kill herself for years. Amy Wino did this to herself, plain and simple, but hey good job Amy, you finally pulled it off. There should be no story for Winehouse, she ultimately got what she wanted. My thoughts and prayers are with those young children who lost there lives.

      • Michael

@Ryden That’s cruel. Just because she was self-destructive doesn’t mean she deserved to die.Amy was screwed up, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a good thing she died. You seem to be praising her death, and that’s just said, as it cheapens and disgraces what you’re trying to say. And as for the kids… well, I agree that it is a horrible tragedy, but I think it’s easier to deal with the sadness of one messed-up person than 100 innocent children. That’s why we focus on the one celebrity death: it’s so much easier to handle then hearing about 100 murdered kids. My thoughts go out to Amy Winehouse’s tragic (but inevitable) death as well as those children. Unlike you, I have enough compassion to go around.

      • JohnnyD

She deserved it, totally. She squandered what was given to her. There are like 9 billion people on this planet sucking up resources — should we really feel that bad for a celebrity wastecase? Good riddance I say. Maybe Charlie Sheen could go next.

      • Michael

@JohnnyD No one deserves to die like that. It’s never fun or enjoyable to see a celebrity, wastecase or not, die. Besides, there are a lot more useless people taking up resources on our planet than Amy Winehouse

      • TJC360

I am looking at you Rydan, why dont you drop dead fuc!ing moron.

    • Bob

I don’t think there’s “outrage and awe” realizing that Amy has died. Just a sadness, reflecting what was probably inevitable. This isn’t about who’s on the front of the newspapers, her or the (also sad) 92 deaths in Norway. However, Krusty, being a generous man I forgive your total ignorance.

      • Jennifer

@Bob – I couldn’t agree with you anymore! Finally, someone with sense. :-)

      • cheese

I have to ask, is it really sad if it is inevitable? I mean, if it was bound to happen, why be sad? Personally, as a fan of Amy Winehouse, I’m like “oh.” Just based on how she lived her life, this is no shock. None at all. Sometimes I don’t understand how people and their feelings work. I was watching the newest Harry Potter film in the theaters and I kept hearing people all around me sobbing at the various character deaths. Obviously these are people who are fans, but they knew what was coming, why are they bawling? I don’t know, maybe I’m just weird, but I don’t like the idea of wasting energy to become truly attached to things on that level. I understand if you know people who died on a personal level and such, but when you literally have zero interaction with people who have had unfortunate things happen to them, I find it hard to feel any kind of feelings toward them when said things happen. I don’t know, maybe I’m just shielding myself from feeling bad, because truly feeling bad sucks.

      • Jessi

OK, I know what you are saying, but this IS an entertainment site. Hence the reason they are reporting on an entertainers death opposed to the horrific deaths in Norway.

      • Tara

As a Harry Potter fan, I definitely cried in the theater (but I tried–unsuccessfully, mind you–to hid it). Just because you read the book doesn’t mean that you automatically know how it will be portrayed on the screen. And you have to give the actors credit for being able to elicit an emotional response.

      • Ian

Tara is about as with it as Amy Winehoue was…

      • Dee

You’re right cheese. I mean if say, your mom, is diagnosed with Cancer and she dies after five years, it wouldn’t be sad would it? You would presumably know it was coming, right?

      • hayley

ummm, by your logic no one would ever be sad about any death…because its inevitable we’re all going to die, no? when you wish that someone was still around and they are not, its still sad, even when you know it is coming.

      • Lisa London

@ Dee: re-read Cheese’s post. What he/she’s saying is that YES, you would be sad and grieve if you actually knew the person who passed away (just like in your “mom having cancer” example). What’s bizarre is people who seem to get into hysterics when celebrities die; people they have never met and who had little impact in their lives. I agree with Cheese; I find it odd.

    • Brianne

It is completely possible to care about both Amy and Norway.

      • bob

        get a grip

      • Lois

I agree Brianne. Amy and Norway aren’t in a competition for sympathy or attention.

    • True Blue

Every time there’s news on a celebrity’s death, there’s always the jackass like yourself with the typical “But there are more tragic deaths around the world, who cares about some self-indulgent celebrity” comment. Yes, it’s sad what happened in Norway, but doesn’t make Amy’s death any less tragic. You can mourn both instances. Don’t be an ass.

      • CdnSarah

Exactly. I don’t know why we are supposed to choose who to be sad for, as if grief only comes in one parcel, and we Picked Amy over 100 children. We all seem to find anything we can to discredit others, even in tragedy “oh, if you care about a drug addict dying you’re stupid, but if you care about the mass murder in Norway you’re cultured and worldly”. They both are terrible, maybe not equally, but profoundly.

    • Dinjab

Well, no one cares when 600 Africans die in some ferry accident. Generally, we’re upset when any light-skinned people die. Admit it. For every Caylee Anthony, there are a dozen darker-skinned-toddlers whose parents didn’t take any cute pics of them who are senselessly murdered. Most Americans don’t give a rat’s as$

  • Emma

Amy, I’m happy for you and all, but Heath Ledger had the better shocking death.

    • bob

      Who’s Heath Ledger?

      • Dinjab

That guy in A Knight’s Tale

  • Michael

Boy, are they quick to make a quip about her after she died. I guess Amy Winehouse’s life after death will be nothing but a bad set of one-liners.

    • Lois

It appears that many at the panel, including the cast and writers, didn’t know that Amy Winehouse had died. So the “joke” was the way they found out. Very sick.

      • Jm3

When I got up this morning msnbc had the headline “Winehouse reportedly found dead” which to me implies rumor or uncertainty. It’s possible (unlikely maybe) that he was asking the question seriously. Remember just last week Hugh Hefner was supposedly dead.

    • Ian

Uhhhh, her LIFE was pretty much a set of one-liners.

  • Justsayin

Who cares she was a 1 hit wonder at best, she wanted to live her life like a joke so why are folks so shocked when people joke about her death. Good riddance i say now i dont have to see her bony drug abusing alcoholic pictures anymore.

    • Alex

Thank you! I hate all the she’s an “icon” no thats shes dead bullshiit. She had two memorable songs.

      • seth

        two? I only remember one..

        “no, no, no..”

      • Fatima

You know, there are some of us that actually listen to people’s full albums.

      • bob

You know, there are some of us that actually use corn cobs to wipe our rear ends.

      • @bob

        And then you eat it.

      • Mellissa

So, people like Fatima would be called fans of the song Rehab, hence listening to the entire album. People unlike Fatima are not fans of the song Rehab, hence only knowing that song. Fatima’s point? Uncertain.

      • @Melissa

The comments prior to Fatima’s were about whether or not Winehouse had one song or two that people liked. Fatima commented that some people listen to the whole album.

      • Guru

She had one popular song. The “No, no, no.” song. Or whatever it is called. I’m not really even sure of it’s name to tell you guys the truth. Get over it.

      • Fatima

@Melissa What’s not clear? Some of us know Amy is more than just one song because we know her whole albums. Regardless of what was technically a hit (and really, what’s that even matter? Amy wasn’t a “radio artist” anyway), those of us who actually bothered to listen past top 40 know there was a lot of substance to Amy’s library. I’m not sure if she’s an “icon,” but she meant something to some us. I feel bad for those that only know one song. Was that so hard to understand?

    • Josh

I’m not so sure that “One Hit Wonder” applies to an artist who won multiple Grammys for that song along with an entire album. Not to mention her two albums were huge in her native UK.

  • Allie

    awkward

  • googie

Stupid! Some respect for her family!

  • Rebecca M

That is wildly tacky, but what do you expect from a show that is wildly tacky? Family Guy is the worst.

    • bob

I think Family Guy is one of the funniest shows on TV. They never lie like everything else we have to watch.

      • @bob

You must have to watch Fox News.

      • Lois

“They never lie like everything else we have to watch.”

You must have to watch Fox News.

      • Lois

        Great minds. LOL

      • bob

Who has better boobs? Lois or Winehouse?

      • Lois

I have boobs. You are a boob.

      • bob

But I can still sing. So there.

  • Cat

God, her body isn’t even in the ground yet and they’re making jokes. Classy.

  • kana

Not surprised someone from Family Guy would make an Amy Winehouse joke on stage at Comic Con on the day she died. The show is a rusty bucket full of vomit and razor blades.

    • Fog cue

Just like the wh0re mother you have.

      • seth

they are just jealous.. pay no attention to them

      • Brian Wallace

Really, “Fog Cue?” REALLY? “Wh0re mother?” You keep it classy, you 36 year-old, fat, friendless virgin who lives at home, loves “Family Guy”, has no job, is uneducated and has horrible hygiene. Keep it classy.

        Brian

      • LOL

Oh God, it’s Brian again. You know, the one who signs his posts, “Brian.” Because people who read posts by “Brian Wallace” can’t figure out that the post is written by someone named “Brian,” so he signs them just to be clear about it all. What worldly wisdom do you have to share with us today, Brian?

      • Guru

Guys have some respect for Family Guy, and stop this fighting instantly.

      • Fog cue

I see what you’re attracted to Brian Wallace – tomorrow morning, you’ll be pooping out soft-serve ice cream.

    • Jon

      kana:
…anyone with a brain will realize that your comment is intentionally overblown, like your pronouncement makes it so. Even money says you have NEVER SERIOUSLY USED the phrase “rusty bucket full of vomit and razorblades” prior to this. Will have to remember that one, next time I need to sound holier-than-thou.

  • osteenq

I think that’s low rent and I didn’t even like or care about Winehouse or her music.

  • Jennifer

All of you making fun of her are sad, sick BEINGS!! I can’t call you people because that would make you humans and by making fun of someones DEATH…YOURE NOT!!! I happen to LIVE in the UK and I have mourning for the people in Norway AND Winehouse!!! NO ONE has shifted their minds to just ONE person!!! Here, the BBC & Sky News have been constantly covering the Norway incident AND Amy’s, both! To even BEGIN to think that one persons death is ‘more or less important’ than anothers is SICK!!! Think about it!! So she made bad decisions! Haven’t we ALL?! Sure, maybe not the way she has but that doesnt make us different….it makes us HUMAN!!! I’m not at all justifying or condoning what she did in her life OR how she lived it…I’m just saying that it’s WRONG to think that someones death is not as important as anothers. If that was the case, we could list ALOT of loved actors & singers in the business that we “shouldn’t be mourning” for the bad, horrible or wrongful decisions they’ve made in their lives.

    • Lisa S

You need to relax Jennifer. You’re projecting your negativity at those that don’t deserve it.

      • Jennifer

Yes Lisa, you’re right. :-) I just got a bit upset.

      • Lois

Lisa, Jennifer isn’t “projecting negativity.” She’s commenting about the negativity of others. And those that would diminish the death of a human being deserve to be criticized.

    • Lois

      I agree with you Jennifer.

      • bob

she sounds like she has the true characteristics of a real enabler

      • @bob

You have the true characteristics of a 14-year-old L0ser.

      • Jennifer

Thank you, Lois. Bob MUST be a child to be so ignorant of someones death. Regardless of the way of death. but then again, that would be putting children down because I have a 13 year old brother and I’m 29 and HE understands it just as much as I did.

    • LOL

Jennifer, it’s obvious that you were trying REALLY HARD to squeeze OUT at LEAST one TEAR to legitimize your SORROW. Tell us DEAR, did IT work?

  • Dan

It’s not funny at all>:( How about showing some respect for her, her family & her fans Mark Hentemann.

  • Brad

Wow, when Seth McFarland goes up to tell you that you made a tasteless joke, YOU made a tasteless joke. I’ve never heard her music, but that doesn’t mean I show disrespect. A person took her life is not something to make fun over.

    • Marcus

The only part about this that surprises me is that Seth McFarland wasn’t the one making the lame joke.

    • April

Yup…when Seth shames you, your joke was tasteless.

  • E L

You know, they could have made a *funny* tasteless joke…

But this is Family Guy and it hasn’t been remotely funny for years now.
