'Glee Project' removes Amy Winehouse joke

The death of Amy Winehouse spurred Oxygen to delete a joke made about the singer from its reality show The Glee Project. A Sunday night repeat of an episode dropped the audio on a joke a cast-member made about the 27-year-old singer, who died Saturday after years of struggling with substance abuse.

In the episode, Glee creator Ryan Murphy teased Alex, a contestant on the show: “I’m surprised you didn’t come out here dressed like Amy Winehouse. Why didn’t you?” Alex said he could go change — and then the audio dropped out. The deleted line, first reported by the Boston Herald, was of Glee choreographer Zach Woodlee joking that all Alex needed was “a mop and a bottle,” sparking Murphy and others to laugh.

An Oxygen spokesperson says the network choose to make a change out of respect for Winehouse’s family and friends.

Incidentally, Glee Project has been blooming in the ratings, hitting a series high last week.

The story comes on the heels of a producer on Fox’s Family Guy deliberately making a Winehouse joke at Comic-Con after her death. Networks are already preparing shows about the singer, with cable channel Bio airing a one-hour special on the singer tonight and HD Net scheduling a tribute for next Sunday.

No matter what you feel about her, and everyone knows she was pretty messed up…..she put out some damn great music. I keep reading these comments about her. A lot of people just get so damn vicious. Not necessary. Knock it off. It was coming. Duh. We are not stupid. The haters? Well, it’s not our fault they are uber-nerds who haven’t had sex since the Reagan administration. RIP Amy. Ignore the idiot morons. We all do. And the people making nasty comments….get a life. We know who you are. And to Norway…….we love you. We love you.

      One song?

My DVR aired the joke. I remember thinking that I rather liked it. It wasn’t like ‘she’s a trashy drag queen’ but it was a cool tribute- like, is this female soul singer going to be your next outfit? A nice tribute, if you think about it. But that’s just me.

Glee likes Amy Winehouse. A lot. It’s done 3 of her songs (Rehab, Valerie, Back to Black). I’m sure the comment was meant to be a humorous homage to Winehouse quirky do’ and look . I can understand why G-Project would have edited it because some people could misconstrue it as Amy-bashing. RIP, AW.

They aired the episode for the first time in Canada last night and didn’t edit it out. I didn’t laugh because all I could think of was that she had just died but at the same time, I wasn’t offended. This was shot months ago and aired live in the USA before her death. There’s no reason to be upset by it.

They did not cut the joke on the Canadian broadcast Sunday night. kinda tasteless yes, but clearly this was taped a long time ago.

  • Fridge

They didn’t cut it out of the original airing. I thought it was interesting that the joke was in an episode that aired right after her death since the show would have been shot months ago. I didn’t think it was Amy bashing. Let’s be realistic here, she put out some great music but the woman was a mess.

Glee should be taken off the air.pathetic

  • Lavetta thomas

I dnt feel that they had to cut that scene out especially if it had been shot a while ago…also i hate it when ppl feel bad once somebody dies if they really did it out of respect for her then they would have nvr put it in the show period…dnt feel bad now that shes not here…rip amy ur beautiful…

  • Emmy

Why is it that people change jokes or drop nasty comments when a person dies?
I understand respect for the persons family, but what about the hurt it’d cause the person concerned in the first place? Its like saying ‘yes we know it would have offended and the comment was nasty, but now they are dead we’d better not.’

People need to stop respecting people only in death to protect their image and start respecting people in life.

    • Dean

Exactly, Emmy. They only drop the comment because it now makes them look bad, not because it’s in poor taste. It was always in poor taste.
