John Goodman joins 'Community' for six-episode arc

Give a big Greendale welcome to John Goodman: The Roseanne vet has enrolled in Community for a six-episode guest stint, EW has confirmed. (Vulture first reported the news.) Goodman will play Vice Dean Laybourne, a distinguished, confident administrator who runs the school of Air Conditioning Repair at Greendale Community College — and one who locks horns with Dean Pelton (Jim Rash). At Comic-Con this weekend, the NBC comedy announced that Michael K. Williams (The Wire) will guest star in three episodes as Prof. Kane, a new biology teacher who clashes with Jeff (Joel McHale). Both Goodman and Williams appear in the season 3 premiere, which airs Sept. 22.

Wow. Community is one of my favorite shows, and it’s always been seriously good. But they are really trying to get SERIOUS, lol. They’ve got the quality to back it up, and it impresses the stars they want to have guest. I love it.

Community is stuck in a ratings rut. Its fans know the show is great but they need to bring in more viewers in to keep the show going. Hopefully the guest stars and modifications they do to the show keep what we like about the show and bring in more viewers so it can stay on for many more seasons.

Has lost a tremendous amount of weight and COMMUNITY is an excellent vehicle to reintroduce the ‘new look’ to a younger demographic.

Good choice! I love the guy — check out TREME, his work was spot-on.

You may want to hold off on that John Goodman lost alot of weight comment. I saw him on “Morning Joe” last week and it looks like he put quite a bit of it back on. I was pretty saddened by it, as I think he is one of the best actors out there that usually doesnt get the props he deserves.

Derek, it is common to regain some weight after such a dramatic loss. He will find his ‘happy medium’. It can take years for that to happen. I know, I’ve been there.

—-It’s not like Glee where they just throw famous people in to try to prove that they can get famous people to be on the show. I think Community uses their guest stars very well and doesn’t make it all about the guest.

Yay Community! Isn’t it September yet?

  • RJM

Best show on tv, but really doesn’t need famous guest stars. Always works best with the core cast.

I agree but I don’t really think this is an example of stunt casting. It’s not like Glee where they just throw famous people in to try to prove that they can get famous people to be on the show. I think Community uses their guest stars very well and doesn’t make it all about the guest.

      • Niko

@Pash, I completely agree. It’s like when Josh Holloway appeared last season — he was used sparingly and was perfect. Can’t wait for the new season!

  • Cate

Sweet! Love John Goodman, love Community.

  • Stroh

Absolutely the best comedy on TV right now. Can’t wait to see Omar and Jeff go at it. Indeed!

  • Will

Nice! Looking forward to this. John Goodman is all over tv right now…anyone else watching Damages?

Community will steal your soul. Other comedies fear Community.

  • Saulo

    He’s godawful in Damages.

    • Isembard

He’s awful in everything. His performances generally involve acting warm and fuzzy and then exploding into a rage. Seriously, he must have done this same thing in a dozen different movies. Really bummed that he’ll be on one of my favorite shows 6 freaking times. Ugh.

Oh, better to focus on Michael K. Williams being there! Joy!

The two of you are out of your element.

      • Aidan

Actually, he was awesome in Monster’s Inc.

    Pop pop!

      Pop what Magnitude? POP WHAT?!

  • BHM1304

“Omar Little” at Greendale, it is on! Michael K. Williams can commiserate with this cast and crew on what it feels like to be ignored by Emmy when you are the best show, be it Drama or Comedy, on the air.

John Goodman has been fine in the two episodes of “Damages” thus far. “Damages” has been fantastic as usual since it move to DirecTV. Glen Close and Rose Byrne have been magnificent as usual. The new cast member standouts though have been Dylan Baker and Chris Messina. Both have been excellent additions.

  • Trent

Awesome news! LOVE Community, and they always use their guest stars well. John Goodman and “Omar” will fit right in. Can’t wait!

  • Bob

Jesus, John Goodman, we’re still not over you offing yourself on Treme. I think you should stay unemployed for a while longer.

Thanks for interesting blog post. You guys are always provide information that it makes it impossible not to want to buy your next product ;I cant wait to see what you guys come up with based on all your research and data that you gather.

  • Paul

Those are great prices. You should continue to buy at ridiculously low prices and sell at higher prices. That is a very good idea you had. You are obviously very astute.
