Apocalypse wow: History channel is set to announce a six-hour miniseries that brings the Vietnam War into 2011 with a true high-definition telecast.
The network collected thousands of hours of uncensored war footage for the project, much of which has never previously been seen, then restored and and converted the most compelling moments to HD. Much of the footage was from soldiers’ personal handheld cameras. Dexter star Michael C. Hall will narrate the project, with the words of more than a dozen war veterans voiced by Edward Burns, Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Zachary Levi, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Dean Cain, Dylan McDermott, and others.
The project follows up History’s 2009′s Emmy-winning miniseries, WWII in HD, which similarly told the story of a war using the first-person accounts of soldiers, reporters and other personnel. The miniseries premieres this fall.
UPDATE: Here’s the trailer as promised (warning, contains graphic descriptions):

This sounds awesome! I loved World War II in HD. As a Navy nurse, I love hearing stories from the battlefront first hand.
I am looking forward to this series.
Maybe, maybe and I hope against hope that the History Channel is getting back to what it should be doing instead of shows about pawnshops, driving cars and trucks, cutting down trees, killing alligators and two dimwits going to yard sales or Larry the Cable Moron saying “Git er done.”
Amen! Could not have said it better…
Ratings drive channels, they’re giving people what they want. Blame yourself for not watching.
Agreed, although they aren’t any different than anyone else in that they need income.
My wife is a longtime Advertising Director at a newspaper and you wouldn’t believe how many people think that a newspaper should be a free community service.
I totally Agree!!
Great. I have certainly enjoyed seeing WWI and WWII documentaries that used color footage, some of it in HD, most of it in standard color.
On a related note, considering that almost everyone on the planet uses a Gregorian Calendar, I wish either PBS or the History Channel would make a documentary on how it came into existance.
WWI color footage?
@Anne: Yes, there is a 2003 documentary, (which has been televised in the USA), named: World War 1 in Color. It was narrated by Kenneth Branagh. However, what they did was to take black and white film and “colorize” it. It was not originally filmed in color, the color was added to the black and white. Just like the History Channel is taking standard color footage and upgrading it to High Definition, as they did with their WWII series.
I’m sick of all the end of the world shows that run constantly. But “Vietnam” I will watch.
Can’t waite. Seems its been awhile for a good documentry on that war.
Just wish S. Spielberg would do a movie on the U.S. Air Force’s forward air controller’s saga of the pilot that was lost for over 3 weeks near Hanoi. Air Force Capt. Steve Ritchie was a big part of that. Unbelievable story. Pilot was also rescued.
Great. if anyone is interested there’s a great true story that’s just been uploaded onto Kindle, Virga Tears, which is about two brothers-in-law who go to Vietnam. One is a West Point grad who served there and the other is an anti-war college professor. What they find changes them both forever.
Film IS HD. Even old film is HD. Black and white 16 mm shot with a wind up Bolex is HD. It’s not converted to HD. It’s already HD.
Unless, of course, they’re saying that the tradition HD 1,280×720 pixels has been improved to 2 million pixels.
Great! But when exactly is this going to be on TV?!??!
I see somewhere else it will be this fall… so much for journalists asking who what when where and how…
I look foward to it, if they do those proud vets justice. I was up North with I Corps near the DMZ. Please, please don’t disappoint .
I covered your AO as a news reporter and fotog, 1971-75. You guys were amazing. Welcome home, vet.
Where’s that trailer?
Kevin Connolly? Yeah, that’s how I’d want my personal sentiments recreated.. with a smarmy voice-over by Douchebag McDucklips.
My sister calls The History Channel “The Hitler Channel” because of the quantity of time it devotes to the “memory” of Adolph Hitler. There is more to the history of mankind than war and Hitler. I would love to see programs about the evolution of nations, the history of scientific philosophy, ancient history, the history of Asian nations, etc. These subjects never get a hearing. It’s all Hitler all the time.
@ChicagoJim. Your sister should be OK with this one. As far as I can recall Hitler never participated in the Vietnam War.
The French paid 1 battalion of ex-nazi military to fight in VN, along side of the 30,000 North Africans who were enscripted by the French Colonial Power.
I’m not crazy about War stories but they do have an amazing cast.. i mean they picked the creme of the crop from successful TV series.
Again. Where is the trialer and what date will it be starting??
This fall. The trailer is right there.
