TeenNick's '90s block launches strong in ratings

Tags: , News

TeenNick has successfully brought back the ’90s. The network’s late-night launch of its retro “The ‘90s Are All That” block delivered the channel’s biggest viewership ever for the time period.

Kenan & Kel (1995), All That (1996), Doug (1991), and Clarissa Explains It All (1992) all performed well for the network. From midnight to 2 a.m. across basic cable, the block averaged 555,000 viewers, up 114 percent from last year. As you might expect, among the show’s target audience of 12 to 24, the block also bested older-skewing talk shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan, and Late Show with David Letterman.

That’s amusing, but good to hear. :)

    • FRINGE RULES

I know it did not run on Nick, but I hope they add “Brotherly Love” a show from the late 90s on NBC starring the Lawrence brothers.

      • Whitney

They won’t Brotherly Love belongs to Disney. Nickelodeon had Doug first so it was probably easier getting Doug back then getting Brotherly Love.

    • ashley

Please bring back ahh real monsters u loved that cartoon

  • A2

AIR THE WILD THORNBERRYS!!! It’s still 90′s and was a great series.

    • Captain

The Wild Thornberrys is barely the 90s.

      • Justin

Salute Your Shorts was practically 80s so don’t even. Please.

    • AC

      You must be young.

    • Ndamukong Suh

What are u like 19? thorberrys sucked! bring back my brother and me, space cases, alex mack, salute your shorts, are u afraid of the dark, you cant do that on televsion, wild n crazy kids, guts, rockos modern life.. ect.. gtfo of here with thronberrys

      • Zury

Agreed! I would LOVE to see Space Cases and Alex Mack again. Can’t wait to see Salute Your Shorts again. I just hate that they have to play only 3 shows at midnight a day and that’s it. They need to play it during the day and a lot more shows. Expose kids to what a REAL show is like. Not the crap that’s on now.

      • Rob

I liked Space Cases because it was a blatant ripoff of Star Trek: Voyager. Years later, I realize that Space Cases was not a good show, because it was a blatant ripoff of Star Trek: Voyager.

Also, agreed on Thornberries. That was not a true “’90s Nick” show. You can have that back in a few years when your age cohort enters the workforce and becomes more valuable to advertisers eager to capitalize on your childhood nostalgia.

      • Char

Does anyone remember Roundhouse? I am only 26 and i used to LOVE it! I feel like no one remembers it. ;/

      • Rob

Yeah, I remember that one, Char. Kind of the successor to “You Can’t Do That on Television” and the precursor to “All That” in Nick’s sketch comedy slot. I still remember the theme song pretty well, actually.

      • Justin

I’m sorry but this really pissed me off. I’m 20 and just because this individual is a tad younger than you, does not mean that his/ her comment about the Thornberrys is any less relevant. I’m sure I can tell you more about 90s Nick shows… We (18- 21) grew up with it to! And PS- Salute Your Shorts lasted one year/ season… how many season did the Thornberrys last? Thanks.

      • Justin

        seasons*

      • Char

YAY Rob! I thought I was crazy, no one ever mentions it or talks about it…

      • Ndamukongisdumb

        Bitch I’m 19 how are 18-20 any different they’re still 90s kids
        -_-
I happen to have watched Rugrats, All That, Alex Mack, Are You Afraid of the Dark, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, CatDog, Kenan & Kel, etc.
The people who’re 16 and under is who you should be referring to
plus Thornberrys debuted in 1998 it’s still a show in the 90s dufus….
        -_-

      • bj

19 year olds are part of 90s kids too dumbass you GTFO….

    • ashley

That show came out in 2000 get your cartoons strait

  • nunya

I don’t get this channel, so I really hope they’ll start playing these shows on regular Nickelodeon. I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend afternoon! :P

    • stupid comment

It is regular Nickelodean, dumba$$. Just at night. Nick. At. Nite. Pretty sure it says it right in the very-short-so-you-can’t-have-wasted-too-much-time-to-read-it article

      • Anne

Actually, TeenNick is its own channel. Separate from Nickeloden and its Nick-at-Night line up.

      • Ryan

I was going to post the same thing, “stupid comment!” But unlike you, I did my research first and discovered that in fact it is a separate network. So while I am somewhat surprised by this discovery, at least I don’t look as stupid as you do because I “wasted” a second to check.

      • Kayla

Hey dumb*** it’s not the same channel. Why don’t you freaking read the page right.

  • Michael

Wild Thornberrys was lame. They need to air Salute Your Shorts and Pete and Pete!

    • James

Hell yes! And maybe some Are You Afraid of the Dark!

    • Jason C.

Each week is going to be a somewhat different lineup. I know they’re hitting Pete and Pete (my favorite Nick show) but I’m not sure about Salute Your Shorts (I hope they do). I hope around Halloween they also play the old Marc Summers Halloween special with Lance Burton! I also want to see Hey Dude, The Secret World of Alex Mack, and The Tomorrow People!

      • Christian

I hate to break it to you but no it’s not. Clarissa, All That, K&K and Doug will be on through at least the month of August.

  • James

Thanks for telling me its on! I’ll have to check it out.

Wild Thornberries was terrible and way way too late to be considered classic 90s Nickelodeon.

  • Travis

The Secret World of Alex Mack was by far my favorite! Clarissa Explains it All is a very close second though…

    • Captain

I was just gonna say, they should bring back that show!

    • Jason C.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants Alex Mack in there!

  • Dave

They need to air Aah Real Monsters!

  • Mags

Once they start airing Hey Dude! I’m in.

  • Amanda

    Space Cases!

    • AC

      OMG YES! SPACE CASES!

      • Kat

        YES!!!!

  • 90′sbaby

I’m mad that they are not showing the whole All That.

    • Whitney

Not this again and I deal this on facebook. TeenNick probably don’t have the rights to show them. You have pay to pay the music companies and pay royalties to the artists

  • Henri M.

What title is it under? I looked on my TV guide and it says nothing about the 90′s block. Is it on Nicktoons?

    • sm

      teen nick

  • Woot

Mystery Files of Shelby Woo? Are You Afraid of the Dark? 100 Good Deeds for Eddie McDowd (might have that one wrong)? Invader Zim? The Secret World of Alex Mac? … Wow I really am a 90′s kid.

    • Martin

Omg I had totally forgotten all about Mystery Files that show was epic too.

  • sm

Love this, but they need to maximize it’s potential… Each night should have a different line up, there’s so many shows to choose from, easily doable. Maybe if it stays successful, the network can rebrand one of their channels to air nothing but Nick Classics… they have like 4 plexes that air the same damn icarly over and over again.

    • Zoe

“NICK CLASSICS” is a great idea for a channel. I was a kid in the 1980s and would love to see them rerun some of those older ones too, but as long as all we get is a 2-hour block, I fear it will never happen. Hopefully these ratings will be strong and someone will consider this idea!

    • fan Of 90s are all that

I agree! There are soo many shows and they should be playing a different show every week!! ( nickelodeon shows of course)

  • Steve

Kenan & Kel sucked. How about some Rugrats or Ren & Stimpy.

    • Kvinna

Agreed about K&K. I’d love to see Ren and Stimpy back on. Spongebob who???

  • Bebe

So, let’s be real about this: The target audience is college kids staying up all night getting stoned, right? I wish they would just say that.

    • McProphet

Except current college kids are barely old enough to remember these shows in their initial run, so that argument doesn’t really work. Doug left Nick in 1994, which is the same year a rising high school senior was born. I don’t recall being in college and getting baked to crap from the 80′s like The Snorks.

      • Kate

Actually that isn’t true. I am a college sophomore and I watched all of Doug and even saw the movie in theaters. It may have stopped it’s original run in 94′ but it was on much longer than that. I also watched all of Pete & Pete and All That and they aired when I was a very small child. And I can say from experience that college kids do watch random stuff like this at 1 am, everyone loves a bit of nostalgia.

      • whatnowsucka

I have to disagree. I think they are targeting people that were born anywhere from the early ’80s to the mid ’90s. Just because kids weren’t necessarily alive to see them in their initial run, doesn’t mean they don’t remember them. From about 1995-2000, they pretty much showed all these shows and nothing else, even though most of them went off air in the mid to late ’90s. Like, I was born in 1994, and I remember EVERYTHING.

      • smartie

Wow your argument is invalid dumbass…
Current college kids are just as old enough
its the current high schoolers that aren’t that old enough

    • Whitney

Their target audience is people who born in the mid 80s and early 90s. Their promo stated it. It said that for grown ups who grew with 90s nick.

      • smartie

        Someone with a brain :)
