'Mad Men' season 5 to start shooting next week

Just when it was starting to get suspicious that AMC’s Mad Men hadn’t yet announced a date to start its production, here comes this news: The critical fave will begin shooting its much delayed fifth season on Aug. 8, and will premiere next year. It’s unclear how the show will handle January Jones’ pregnancy — whether Betty Draper will be with child, if her figure will be hidden, or if her scenes will be delayed until after she has her baby, which is due in November. In other Mad Men news, the show’s first four seasons have now begun streaming on Netflix… assuming you’ve forgiven Netflix.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but August 8 isn’t next week.

    • Melissa in CA

It’s a week from this coming Monday.

the *your* you are talking about is spelled *you’re*, you know, you are….

  • Karate Pants

Wake me up when they announce a season five premiere date. This is unbearable.
I vote Betty is pregnant with Don’s baby. Buh bye, Megan…buh bye.

    • Juneau

Wouldn’t that be devine? I vote for this plot twist, too. Bring on the Mad Men already.

    • Juneau

I just know things aren’t over between Don and Betty.

      • Karate Pants

Agree. It’s not over. And to have happily ever after with Megan just doesn’t jive with what we’ve come to expect.

    • tracy bluth

I actually like Megan (although sometimes I think I’m the only Mad Men fan who does) but I agree that “happily ever after” just doesn’t seem to fit in with Mad Men. And yeah, it’s so not over between Betty and Don- just look at that last scene with them when he tells her he’s engaged. I also think Betty realized that Henry isn’t her knight in shining armor (though he’s dealing with her childishness in the best way he can).

      • erin

I like Megan too, even though I’m *still* surprised Don proposed. She is so good with the kids, and they deserve someone who will treat them as people rather than an inconvenience.

You’re definitely not the only fan – I love Megan. I think it’s a character with extreme potential, and she is not just a replacement for Betty. She will make a wife for Don but she will be much more than that, in ways that Betty could never be. The fact that Betty is disenchanted with Henry is also more than obvious, but that does not mean that Don shares her feelings. She was disappointed because what she wanted was unrealistic to begin with. She has a long way to go, before (if ever) she gets back with Don

      • rebecca

it’s easy to enjoy the kids when you are having fun with them at Disneyland instead of being stuck in the suburbs with them.

they already stated several months ago that season 5 would premiere in March. What more do you want? Do you need the exact date right now? There’s 4 or 5 Sundays in March. It’ll be one of them.

    • Dee

I agree with erin, and I don’t think Betty and Don should get together, that nostalgic reaction is common when former spouses remarry. I would like to see the Psychiatrist address Betty’s selfishness, and her responsibility for sabotaging her marriages.

  • graeme

I hope they don’t neglect Betty again this season. She’s too good for a character to keep sidelined, and the finale was a great showcase of Don and Betty (loved that final scene between them)

I have not forgiven Netflix and I already canceled my streaming option. FML.

    • Matt W.

      Torrents are your friend.

      • Melissa in CA

Or rerun. AMC is rerunning the entire series starting Sunday.

  • Dirk

They could not show Betty at all and it would be fine by me. Just refer to her occasionally. Now that the marriage is over, the character is superflous. Drop her and move on.

    • tracy bluth

I agree, although the only downside to no Betty would be no Sally.

      • itsme

in response to that…heck yess! i would love to see more of sally and i cant wait till she gets a little older (season 5) and stand up to betty foolish torments, im gamed for sally slapping betty if she tries to hit her again lolz!

    • J Philip

Since his relationship with his kids is one of the lynchpins of Daper’s character, I fail to see how their mother is superfluous.

      • Oh Gee Golly

Because now that they’re done with the “why I hate my mommy chapter,” and it’s really obvious that she can’t handle the kids on her own if Don would take custody they could just drop her.

  • Eric

Seriously???!!! I need the season 5 premiere to be next week!!! This waiting is torture!!! Fans shouldn’t be waiting in the first place!

  • Matt W.

YES! Finally! I’m super excited and I was actually planning on starting the series over on DVD since I haven’t in over a year.

  • Michael

    More Joan please! J’adore her.

    • itsme

yes yes! love me some “joany” =]

  • OurThing

More of the red head with big jugs!!!

Yea, I know it’s a good show, but the over-praise of Mad Men has got to stop. There is other quality television, too.

    • Jan

It’s actually praised jut the right amount.

  • PDDB

The four seasons of Madman will be streamed regardless whether or not we’ve forgiven netflix.

    • Dee

I just finished watching all four seasons on Netflix an so glad to find it there since I missed the first 3 seasons on cable. Can’t wait for season 5.

  • jmag

    Great show…Highly overrated…Breaking Bad is much better…The Wire was 10 times better..never received a Emmy Nom..crazy..

  • Jesse

Can’t wait for S5. My only worry about Betty’s second marriage probably not working out is that I think the actor who plays Henry Francis (Christopher Stanley) is amazing, and I’d hate to see him leave the show. Still, Mad Men has had tons of fantastic actors come and go (Bryan Batt as Sal Romano, Anne Dudek as Francine, Melinda Page Hamilton as Anna Draper, Patrick Fischler as Jimmy Barett, Randee Heller as Miss Blankenship), so I suppose I can’t get too attached.

  • jets

2012 is too far away. …the only bonus I can see is that during the deley, Sally (Keira Shipka) probably grew, and the further she gets to her teen years, in that 1960’s time frame, the more interesting she might possibly become. She’s probably too young to be a “flower child” in later seasons, but maybe not? It’d be fun to see her rebel agaisnt her dad & mom.

  • mariela

i don’t think they can hide her baby bump at this point, if she’s gonna be in it. she’s pretty big and still has a ways to go. i bet it’ll have to be written in, she’s having a new baby with henry

    • ugeauxgrrl89

That’s my bet, Betty will have Henry’s baby. Back then that’s what women like Betty mostly did–have babies, especially with a new husband, and unfortunately, as a last ditch effort to keep the marriage together.
