TLC orders 'All-American Muslim' reality show

Categories: Reality TV

It’s a Muslim Jersey Shore!

OK, not really. But TLC’s new series All-American Muslim does follow the MTV hit’s trend of delving into a cultural community for reality entertainment.

The show will focus on five Muslim-American families in Dearborn, Mich., which is home to the largest mosque in the United States. “All-American Muslim is a perfect fit for TLC, inviting viewers into a world they might not otherwise experience,” says Amy Winter, GM, TLC. “Through these families and their diverse experiences, we will explore how they blend their values and traditions with everyday life in America, providing insight into their culture with care and compassion.”

The show debuts in November, here’s the official description: READ FULL STORY »

Comic-Con reaction: What fans had to say about J.J. Abrams' new series 'Alcatraz'

ALCATRAZ

Could J.J. Abrams have another hit on his hands? Or is his new series Alcatraz, debuting this fall on Fox, an all-too-familiar tune?

The audience members flowing out of the last night’s Comic-Con screening in San Diego seemed largely to agree that Abrams’ stamp was all over this new mystery (duh) series, which stars Sarah Jones (Sons of Anarchy), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), and Lost alum Jorge Garcia. But the twist-filled, time-jumping hour proved to be a lot for some to take in. Here are some of the reactions EW got at the exit door:

Chris Brewer, Sacramento, Calif. — “It was really cool. I really like J.J. Abrams and it felt like one of his. It’s a cool idea and I think they can do a lot with it. It had that Lost feel to it — there were a lot of questions. It’s a little bit supernatural, but also grounded. I like the Alcatraz [prison] setting.” READ FULL STORY »

Kurt Sutter previews 'Sons of Anarchy' at Comic-Con, talks season 4

Sons-Of-Anarchy

Kurt Sutter doesn’t do well with big crowds. So the idea of Comic-Con, despite his wife Katey Sagal’s vast experience at the event (for Futurama), was daunting. “The thought of going down there is a little overwhelming for me because I just know how huge it’s become, but last year was really my first year down there and it was pretty amazing, pretty overwhelming. The only thing I’ve been to which was somewhat similar — I’m a big gaming guy, so I’ve gone to E3 a couple of times — and it is obviously a fraction of what Comic-Con is,” he says. “The turnout for the panel and all the fans, it was just interesting to see the in-person personification of that kind of fan feedback. You obviously get it on Twitter, and obviously people are huge fans of the show, but to see all of that energy in one room is pretty awesome.”

And Sutter and the cast of Sons of Anarchy are looking to do it all again this year with their Sunday panel, at which Sutter says, they’ll hopefully preview the first few minutes of the show’s next season, premiering Sept. 6. In a chat with EW to gear up for the event, Sutter talked more about his Comic-Con memories and what fans can expect from the new season. 'Love Bites' creator on Thursday's finale: 'It felt like a successful little miniseries'

Categories: Deals, TV Biz

In the beginning, Love Bites on NBC showed so much promise — a dramedy-anthology featuring popular stars like Becki Newton and Greg Grunberg that creator Cindy Chupack described as Love, American Style meets Love Actually. Unfortunately, a bad combination of too many cooks (it went through three regime changes at NBC) and an ambitious conceit (new stars every week!) ended up side-lining the show. Chupack also reduced her role to that of a consultant because she had a baby on the way. Greg Garcia teases 'Raising Hope' season 2! Plus, does baby Hope have job security?

Season 1 of Raising Hope may not have been a ratings darling, but executive producer Greg Garcia knows they have something special. And Emmy voters do, too. Last week, the show picked up two nominations — one for Best Actress in a Comedy for Martha Plimpton and another for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Cloris Leachman, who will be billed as a series regular in season 2. (Garcia jokes of the latter nomination, a result of Leachman’s week-by-week agreement to be on the show, “I congratulated her and said, ‘We loved you so much as a guest actress, we brought you back 19 times.’”)

As production on season 2 approaches, Garcia is looking at these noms as signs of good things to come. “It’s great to get any kind of recognition for our show, and certainly those two women deserve to be among the nominees,” he says.

But what exactly is to come on the gem of a show? EW called Garcia for answers…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It’s great to start off season 2 on this high note. What are you hoping for this season?
GREG GARCIA: We’re really proud of what we did season 1. Sometimes you sit back and say, “What did you do wrong? What did we do right?” I’ll be honest with you, we loved season 1. We thought everything really came together nicely. We liked how the season worked out. It’s kind of my attitude — and I hope it’s in the network’s and studio’s attitude, too. We’re making a really good show that not a lot of people are watching yet. And hopefully that momentum will grow. That’s why things like getting acknowledged by the Emmys for our actresses is good for making people aware of the show. But we’re going to do more of the same. We’re very proud of the show and the only thing we need to do is get more people to watch it. But we’re not making any big changes. READ FULL STORY »

The last thing you want to do in the middle of summer is to think about school. Unless, of course, that school is Greendale Community College. Then you want to think about it a lot. Let us gather for today’s lecture about the NBC comedy Community, titled “Bloopers and Blunders: Failing Is Funny.” Your instructors include but are not limited to: Donald Glover (Troy) and Danny Pudi (Abed), who sample a questionable liquid from a Troy and Abed in the Morning mug; Alison Brie (Annie) and Chevy Chase (Pierce), who show you how to beat up a beat; and Jim Rash (Dean Pelton), who demonstrates the art of a buzzy entrance.

More bloopers — along with deleted scenes, commentary tracks, and a paintball finale featurette — can be found on Community: The Complete Second Season DVD, which is being released on Sept. 6. If you prefer to laugh up close and personal with the cast, head down to Comic-Con on Saturday, when Joel McHale & Co. will appear on a panel. Watch the blooper clip below.

Damon Lindelof to moderate MTV's 'Death Valley' panel at Comic-Con

Looking for another place to find co-creator Damon Lindelof at Comic-Con? Check out MTV’s Death Valley panel on Friday. EW has learned that the Lost co-creator has signed on to moderate the festivities for the half-hour comedic horror series about an Undead Task Force that battles vampires, zombies, and werewolves. (Wes Craven was initially slated to host, but had to drop out.) “I have long fantasized about what would happen if the cast of Jersey Shore were to be attacked by zombies,” Lindelof tells EW. “However, once those zombies inevitably realized their hunger for brains would not be satisfied, they would be forced to move on to someplace decidedly more awesome.  That place is Death Valley.  When they asked me to moderate, how could I resist?  Horror/comedy is a slippery slope, and I for one can’t wait to see this show go down it.” Lindelof, who is writing the screenplay for the sci-fi thriller Prometheus, will also play moderator at panels for 20th Century Fox (Prometheus’ studio) on Thursday and the ABC fantasy drama Once Upon A Time on Saturday. Death Valley debuts Aug. 29 on MTV.

She’s back: Shannen Doherty is returning to TV as the star of her own reality series. Cameras will follow the former 90210 star and her fiancé, celebrity photographer Kurt Iswarienko, as they plan their wedding in a new WEtv unscripted show.

The project will chronicle Doherty as she manages all the hectic aspects of preparing for her new marriage (meeting with wedding planners, choosing a venue, and of course, saying yes to a dress) while also renovating her Malibu home.

“People will see a side of Shannen they never expected to see,” says WEtv executive John Miller, who was sold on the concept after watching a pitch tape by Doherty and producers showing the actress “unfiltered, honest and vulnerable.” READ FULL STORY »
