Fox rebooting 'Cosmos' with ... Seth MacFarlane?

Fox is planning a new version of Carl Sagan’s classic space exploration documentary series, Cosmos, except executive producing the show is Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.

Fox is set to order 13 episodes of Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, produced by MacFarlane along with Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan. Close followers of MacFarlane’s work will be less surprised by his interest in producing a serious program: he’s a bright guy who clearly ponders plenty of serious topics. “We’re obsessed with angels and vampires and whatnot,” MacFarlane, 37, tells the New York Times, “when there are many more exciting and very real and much more spectacular things to be excited about, that are right in our own planetary backyard.” Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will host.

A Fox network promoting science and rational thought?! I can’t believe it!

Strange things happen when you quit listening to other peoples’ conversations and start listening to your own voice.

MacFarlane just wasn’t getting enough exposure on FOX. Love Family Guy. Getting a little tired of his over-exposure.

He’s not going to be on the show. And if he’s into doing things like this, hell, why not let him run Fox?

  • JLC

I see they got a physicist to host, but will Stewie design and pilot the ship?

Just as long as they don’t try a Cleveland Show crossover… I’m good with this. Now if they got Roger the Alien a part…

i thought i asked for pecan sandies?

By the way, Carl? Oh my God. These Chocodiles? These Chocodiles, Carl. Oh my God: these Chocodiles. Oh my God.

Nothing against McFarlane having this kind of ambition, and Neil deGrasse Tyson truly is Sagan’s successor… But don’t you think Fox will cancel this once they realize that there are no actual aliens out there to fear, fight and autopsy?

  • Clete

Maybe, Maybe. With Neil deGrasse Tyson associated with this it may be a quality show and do justice to the memory of Carl Sagan. I too am surprised that this will be on Fox.

Makes me nervous as to how Fox will want to jazz it up and/or dumb it down for the look-a-shiny-object set. OTOH, maybe if they use some decent CG to render cosmic objects, it’ll have the razzle-dazzle to distract Joe. Q. Mouthbreather and maybe teach them something.

Wonder if the Jesus freaks will flip out about it. I can see the Parents Television Cro-Magnons foaming about indoctrination because it implies that the Earth and universe weren’t created by an invisible sky wizard 6000 years ago.

Tyson is awesome, though. Hopefully he can keep it interesting. Although of course a lot of Fox fans will get upset because ZOMG teh black scientist.

This is coming from FOX? The same FOX that cancelled “Family Guy” several years ago?

To quote an old movie poster – “Be afraid – Be very afraid.” (1986 – The Fly)

I love shows about space. NatGeo and Science Channel have some good ones. Maybe while watching this new show we can find out about the hole that all the condescending leftist a-holes crawled out of.

    • Meli

Strangely enough, it’s the same pre-enema fudgehole that all the right-wing loonies and the Tea Party crawled out of.

      • James

God forbid anyone expect sane finances and accountability from the most powerful government in the world.

  • Peter

    So…’s yet another reboot.

  • Loser17

    He’s 37?

This sounds so horribly awful. Its like using Sigourney Weaver or Oprah to narrate a show that was produced and written by the greatest naturalist of all time, David Attenborough, whose words carry a weight that no actor’s could replace. Same with Carl Sagan. His passion was in the cosmos. You can’t PRETEND to be interested.

    • M

It’s going to be hosted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is a very accomplished astrophycisit. Please don’t compare him to Oprah.

  • Almar

    McFarlane Owns Fox.

  • Jen

DeGrASS killed Pluto. Can’t stand him.

  • Brian Wallace

I think we can all look forward to a lot of unfunny Hibbs boson and wormhole cutaway gags.
