Production execs on 'Glee' spinoff: 'Plenty of time to resolve the issue'

At the premiere of the Glee 3-D movie in Westwood Saturday, the production chiefs behind the franchise didn’t exactly close the door on talks to spin-off the hit drama with stars Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith.

“The series is going to evolve as it always has,” said Gary Newman, the president of 20th Century Fox TV, which produces the dramedy for its sister network Fox. “I think as the season goes on and Ryan and his other executive producers and writers sort of find the stories that feel like they are resonating, the series will go in one direction or another. I think there is plenty of time to resolve the issue of what happens to the seniors. This group is like a family and there are squabbles and misunderstandings and miscommunications but fundamentally it’s a very tight group of people and I think this is a little blip that once we get into the season will be in the rear view mirror.”

Morale on the show remains high, continued President Dana Walden. ”These actors have a great relationship with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. They have conversations. It’s an incredible executive producer team and they are always in communication with their cast. The cast knows what’s going on, so I think a worse case scenario would be no one talking about our show. So it’s a little bit of a high-class problem. Very soon, and in particular with the movie and start of the third season, there is going to be real information about the show.”

So will that be coming from Murphy or will she be asking him to keep a lid on things for a while? “I completely defer to Ryan,” said Walden. “He has a great relationship with the press and he feels an obligation. He was a member of the press, he knew what it was like to interview someone not giving you any piece of new information and he doesn’t want to do that. I don’t think he’s ever going to change his attitude about that. He’s open. He’s excited about what’s going on in the show. There is no final statement. Every statement leads to another conversation and now it’s just about the work, which he and his team is focused on.” – with reporting from Carrie Borzillo

I hope the spin-off with Lea, Cory and Chris is still on. Those three are my favorites, I love Rachel, FInn and Kurt and want to see those characters evolve and develop away from a high school setting!

Why is there money on the dresser?

  • AustiNights

I could totally see a spin-off where the three or at least two – Lea and Kurt’s characters – move to New York to pursue the big dream. It would be cool to see Lea fail miserably, since it was her dream all her life and for Kurt to find quick fame by falling into the right contacts. I suppose Finn could play some type of role, but I’d rather see him stay in Ohio – his character is totally lame.

    • Michele

Finn represents 99% of this world…and is the most relatable character on the show. More of the audience is like him than Kurt and Rachel. A spin off will go no where without Finn Hudson. It’s a fact. I want to see someone that has the same fears as most of the world, and that is Finn. He is vital to any spinoff success. They know this… Hope it happens!

Im a big fan of GLEE…. but OMG I AM TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT IT…. I feel like it’s never left!!! EW… please stop talking about it really…

    • che

Seriously! Why think of a spin off SO early, season 3 hasn’t even started yet, spin offs are late in seasons, also when the show actually arrives is not going to be exciting anymore because of all this extreme discussing! Just stop the talking and wait for the show to at least have a new promo for the season,

  • Lily

No spin off please… Just concentrate on making Glee a great TV show.

    • che

      DITTO!!!!

  • PJ

Stop. Seriously. Just stop. I’m talking to you, EW.

    • Judy

I agree, EW is only encouraging this stupidity.

    • Allie

Dude, their job is to cover entertainment. That means all parts of it. You may come across topics you don’t like, but surely you know that they shouldn’t be left out just because you don’t like them. Just don’t click on the article next time.

I could care less about whether Finn goes, but I’d love a NY spin off centered around Rachel, Kurt, and Santana. Think how much mileage they could get out of that particular trio. All the comedy, the snark, the drama when their dreams for stardom fall through and they have to live together in some crummy apartment together. The simple thought of Rachel and Santana having to share living space makes me laugh.

    • lau

i couldn’t agree more, i hope they considered naya for the spin-off too, but with her album going on…
but yes, santana and rachel together could be comedy gold, and then some kurt in the middle and that is it
i really hope that whoever graduates, keeps showing up on glee, i mean, naya rachel and chris sometimes carry all the show…no ofense to the others actors

      • damn the torpedoes

Actually RM gave an interview recently where he mentioned Chris, Lea, Cory, & Naya by name as the people he’s talked to about the spinoff. I think she’s def included in the plans. I have the feeling they’re planning to really push her this year. She’s got the big dramatic coming out storyline, she can do comedy and zingers, & most important for this show, she’s got a great voice and can make iTunes sales. It’s a wonder they didnt catch on sooner that she’s such an asset.

      • lau

dam the torpedoes i hope you are right! she deserves that push and i hope if the spin-off move forward, she is in it
in my opinion she, lea and chris carried most of season 2
they have a talent in their hands that can be as big as lea!

  • Deborah

enough is enough of these people and show

  • lau

rachel, kurt and finn……..you throw in some santana and bam! comedy gold!
but really, concentrate on this season
also, dianna said she is a senior, naya said santana is a senior… i hope they are considered for the spin-off too!!

  • Judy

Really, a spin-off? These showrunners can’t even make ONE show that doesn’t suck horribly.

  • Shannon

I hope they can fine some way to keep Lea, Cory, and Chris around. I watched the show initially just for Lea’s magical voice. and I don’t know how Glee will fair without those three. However, I wouldn’t want to see the show become even more crazy by keeping these people around just for the sake of the fandom (isn’t Cory like 29??). I don’t know about a spinoff, it would make the show cheesy and washed up-it would also be sort of copying Degrassi. I mean, would they all go to the same college, and join a Glee club? Or would they show them trying to get on Broadway? I can’t think of anyway that wouldn’t make it wierd.

    • Shannon

      Oops- “find” not “fine”

  • Malcolm

Would love a spinoff (with Lea, Cory, Chris, I wouldn’t care if Naya came or not, I think Kurt and Finn should live together and Rachel should live with someone NEW in New York who actually hate Broadway and has a more realistic view of the world) If it dosen’t happen. Oh well. End of story.

  • Buddy

I’m all for the spin-off. This is a rare instance where it actually makes sense. But I can’t picture it without Blaine as well. Those 4 in New York will be great.

    • ATLgroove

Agreed. There’s something really cool about the way Blaine, Kurt and Santana interact. I’m a big fan of their confrontation with Karofsky in “Night of Neglect.” And, truth be told, aside from Brit, Kurt and Santana have the best one liners in the show.
