The first season of Boardwalk Empire featured a lavish vision of Prohibition-era criminality, complete with enough decadent party scenes to make F. Scott Fitzgerald blush. But viewers were split on whether the show lived up to its “Next-Big-HBO-Show” hype. (The fact that it bore a resemblance to almost every other show in HBO history may not have worked in the show’s favor.) But as a Boardwalk skeptic, I’m surprised by how excited I feel after watching the just-released trailer for season 2. It’s simple, but effective: Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson wanders down the Boardwalk, sharing deep glances with everyone in the show’s sprawling cast, who all seem to be watching him like hawks ready to strike. If nothing else, it’s a good reminder of the sheer depth of acting talent on Boardwalk‘s bench. Check it out:

Like every other HBO show? You mean well-cast. well-written, impeccably acted, produced with care and style? Not every HBO show was my cup of tea, but I always recognized the merit in all of them. And “Boardwalk Empire” is my favorite since “Six Feet Under”
