MTV cancels 'Hard Times of RJ Berger'

Hard times, indeed: MTV has canceled The Hard Times of RJ Berger after a two-season run. The edgy comedy, which chronicled the exploits of a dorky-yet-well-hung high school student (Paul Iacono), grabbed more than three million viewers in its second-season premiere in March, but May’s season finale drew less than one million people.

The network has no shortage of scripted comedy in its pipeline: It will debut the horror-ific Death Valley on Aug. 29 and the animated Good Vibes in October (along with the return of Beavis and Butt-head), while the dramedy I Just Want My Pants Back and an adaptation of Brit hit The Inbetweeners are slated for 2012.

These kids are going to have some hard times get new jobs, that’s for sure! ha ha ha

        Edgy? More like infantile.

EW loves these kiddie shows, but most are simple pathetic.

Lets face it, the second Season just didnt cut it. The 1st was Golden cuz it focused on RJ and his “Gift” . Plus they shouldve Kept Lily dead for season 2, No reason to keep her alive if she wasnt gonna get back with RJ again.

      • Woot

The show was okay, but to be honest Awkward is funnier and a more honest portrayal of high school than RJ… and I thought I would never say that based off the previews. RJ had it’s moments… but I just could never get into it…

It was such a shame because I think the show is good enough to go on for a 3rd season. And I was really digging the gay romance between the jock and the lesser jock…….*bummer*I am an Air Force and single at present .I need a woman who can love me
back ..I also uploaded my hot photos on —-Military’Loves .C óM— under

      • charles

I agree about 2nd season being a lot weaker.

      • Miki

The Second Season was weak thats why its bein canceled, Lily Being Pregnant? Dumbest Cliffhanger Ever.

    • VH1

Wow…this warrants a full article on EW? A show I’ve never heard of on a network that most people could care less about. Come on, only shows about drunk 20 somethings are “successful” around these parts…

    • Rush

“The network has no shortage of scripted comedy in its pipeline…” Because, you know, it would just be too tough for them to play music videos.

  • JPX

What the hell is The Hard Times of RJ Berger?

    • JPX

Filler so they can avoid having to play music videos anymore.

      • Moxie

  • cadace

I don’t care about this show. I’m more concerned about how they’re going to adapt the inbetweeners. Hopefully, it’s halfway decent.

    • Lynne

After they f***ed up Skins 5ways from Sunday, I have no hope for Inbetweeners. If anything, hopefully it will get us the series on dvd here in the states.

      • cadace

        I could only hope!!

        Dvd fwiend!! :)

  • Lia

Stop with the ‘Brit imports’ MTV, you just screw them up. Just show the Brit version! The real Skins is brilliant, just watch it on BBC America people. The same will probably prove true for this one.

I am digging Awkward. and look forward to Death Valley. It looks like Reno 911 with carnage, sweet.

    • abadstroller

I loved “Coupling” when it was on BBC America! Clever stories with sexy double-entendres, engaging attractive cast, great comic/dramatic acting…. Then NBC bought the rights to do it here in the US, and the American version was “bloody well awful”! NBC cribbed the stories practically word for word, but the chemistry and the delivery was leaden–nothing like the effervescent Brit performances and breezy exchanges. The American show had that hammy “wink-wink, nudge-nudge”, “aren’t we naughty?” air about it. Dead painful, as someone on the other side of the pond might say.

      • jj

That’s one reason why I love that show Episodes. It shows just how easily they disregard the source material and what made it work. Hollywood execs that have no taste shouldn’t be the ones in charge of deciding what programming to put on. It’s like the people in charge don’t even LIKE television. But they dolike money!

  • abadstroller

I miss when MTV did mostly Music TeleVision (and you danged kids get off my lawn!)….

    • Woot

Yeah, I feel like MTV forgot what it stands for…

      • Sarah

It doesn’t stand for Music Television anymore. That was years ago when they made it official. Jesus…

      • Deke

I don’t understandthe purpose of th VMAs. Why is MTV giving out awards to music videos that the network never plays?

  • Samantha

Now let’s see if they cancel The Challenges or not

  • Dave

The Inbetweeners is one of my favorite British sitcoms, and MTV is going to ruin it. If an American version was necessary, couldn’t it have at least been on a real network and not MTV? I don’t trust anything MTV makes.

    • candace

      Agreed.

  • frank

isn’t if strange how all of these crappy shows on mtv get cancelled, maybe if they went back to actually showing music and being a music channel, people would watch your channel more.

    • DEB

      Totally agree with you, Frank

  • Hairy Balls

What was this show even about? A fat re tard and a skinny re tard?

  • John

    That guy looked 35 years-old.

  • Solange

Did anyone even watch this show???….

    • Dan

Yeah, we did. It was an AWESOME show… you missed out on something great. :(

      • darius

i agree with you dan i loved that show<\3

  • John

Play some VIDEOS!!! MTV, I issue an ultimatum. The following must happen by August 1st, 2016:
Music Videos of all genres, past and present, must be more prominent.
Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and all other reality TV shows must be cancelled or shovelled to other MTV networks or given a separate channel.
TRL and Max Headroom must make a comeback.
    Who’s with me?

    • Ash

Nobody is with you. Everyone just needs to get over it. MTV doesn’t play music videos anymore because MTV doesn’t stand for Music Television anymore. This isn’t 1994, please catch up with the times.
