'Sex and the City' prequel series in the works

Tags: , News

HBO is looking to find a new home for its Sex and the City franchise on TV. The company is shopping around a project that could end up at The CW based on Candice Bushnell’s novel The Carrie Diaries, a prequel featuring a teenage Carrie Bradshaw.

“Discussions are underway for The Carrie Diaries, Candice Bushnell’s book about Carrie Bradshaw’s high school years, to find a home as a potential television series,” confirmed an HBO representative.

The move comes after critics bemoaned the last Sex and the City movie featuring the grown-up cast. Original City producer Darren Star is not involved with the new project, though Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will potentially produce the new version.

The Carrie Diaries starts with Carrie’s senior year in high school in the 1980s and continues to her first internship in New York City. Samantha Jones is in the story, but the other SATC characters are not.

Obviously, this is all early-stage stuff, but what do you think? Is this simply Yet Another Teen Series or something you’d watch?

    Don’t do it. Just don’t.

    • Nina

IA. Why are they still dragging this out?

    • Miranda

Anyone else think Selena Gomez looks like a young Charlotte? As for Carrie maybe Anna Lynne McCord?

      • Trevor

        one problem, Charlotte’s not spanish.

      • A

Trevor–for one thing, neither is Selena. Her father is Mexican American. Mexico and Spain are 2 totally different countries. Just b/c we speak English, no one calls us English, right?
Secondly, it’s called acting for a reason.

    • Sharlin

I agree. This is going to be lame. Stop milking something that is dry!

      • minister

Dry like the udders of a hideous gruesome old horse.

And it should be noted: I occasionally watched and less-occasionally enjoyed SitC back in whatever wretched decade that was.

    • Flip

They need to do a third movie to give the women a proper ending.

    • Ash

Idk, I think it could work. It could be like “That 70′s show” meets “Sex and the City”, only the show is set in the 80′s of course. I’d watch.

    • Nick

      good grief :S

    • kate middleton

Terrible idea. No one cares about teen Carrie. Let it go.

  • RyRyNYC

Actually Samantha Jone only appears at the very end of the first book; then is a prominent character alongside Miranda Hobbes in book 2 – Charlotte makes a brief cameo at the end of the second book with the implication that book three will complete the foursome.

    • RyRyNYC

Also, this just sounds like a VERY bad idea… Gossip Girl producers will ruin it, and Darren Star has a point – the Carrie I know and love was born in her 30s.

      • spoiler alert!

Truth. Carrie was a virgin in most of the books.

  • TV Junkie

Produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage I’d definitely tune in. It could be the GG spin-off that never took off (about Lily and her sister in the 80′s)

  • Rovena

They will probably cast four of the below rising young actresses in this:
Mischa Barton, Sophia Bush, Miley Cyrus, Kat Dennings, Hilary Duff, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Emma Roberts, Evan Rachel Wood

    • Kris

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sophia Bush but at 29, I think she’s a bit too old to play a High School senior.

  • katie

please don’t get a Disney star to play Carrie! i heard Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez were interested in the role. Its bad enough that Selena Gomez is playing Hannah in 13 reasons why.

    • Kris

I don’t think that’s true. Candace Bushnell said she’d love Selena Gomez to play Charlotte in a phantom-film version, I don’t think Selena has any desire to be in a Sex and the City show.

  • Linsday

Really!? Please no! I understand that Sex and the City 2 was not what everyone thought it was going to be but please don’t punish us by ruining the original series with a prequel series on the CW!! Lets just leave it at peace already…

  • j.j

    HORRIBLE IDEA.

  • Alex

Good luck trying to find someone to play a young Sarah Jessica Parker. A face like that only comes around once every millennium or so.

    • Delon

Is this a compliment or an insult, i wonder?

    • Kris

Blake Lively has the same face and talent. Not a compliment.

      • Miranda

Yes! Blake Lively would be good but i dont think she’d be on two CW shows at once

  • Patty

The idea is horrible and Josh Schwartz and SS can only produce 2 seasons of good television together so this seems like a horrible idea.

  • Paul

Nope. You already killed your franchise with racism. Stop trying to bring it back.

    • spoiler alert!

      racism?

  • Fabulosity

Bad idea. This will be cancelled. I don’t think teen viewers can relate to the “80′s” time setting.

  • Banks

Exciting news! I would definitely watch it. Though I would love if all four girls were incorporated in the show.

  • mandy

leave sex and the city alone!! Good grief. HBO is murdering a great thing.

  • rnvj

It will be just another teen series, but because of the reasons for its being, and the presence of a now very famous character, there will be a novelty factor. Also, most teen series are characteristically different from each other.

  • V

Even though Britney Snow has been in Gossip Girl’s failed attempt at an 80s spinoff, I think she could pull off Carrie.
