Another performer has joined The Biggest TV Show Cast in the Universe. A British actor (you probably guessed that) named Patrick Malahide had joined Game of Thrones season two as Balon Greyjoy, with the news first reported on WinterIsComing.net. Malahide has appeared in movies like The World is Not Enough and Billy Elliot.

Balon Greyjoy is Theon’s stern father, the ruler of the Iron Islands.

For those who missed the other news, the Thrones production will expand to two more countries in season 2 (get those details here). And here are the other season 2 cast updates: Here’s who will play Craster, Bolton, and Gilly. Here’s the assassin Jaqen, Theon’s fierce sister, Stannis and Melisandre and Davos; here’s who’s cast for Brienne and here’s Margaery Tyrell. Check out my Game of Thrones season 1 recaps here.

That works. Just throw a wig on him and he should be fine.

    • Templar

Loved him in the Brit mystery series Inspector Alleyn based on the books by Ngaio Marsh.

When is Season 2 set to air, if they’re still in casting mode? 2015??

    • cristian

They still have 3 months of filming ahead, so it’s possible that we’ll see more casting announcements. The secon season is set to air in Spring 2012, around the same time as last season

    • Me

Sometime around March of next year. They started filming almost a month ago

Just to add, I forgot where (might be ew.com) someone confirmed it will be back in April pretty much every season.

They are filming it right now. Casting is continual as the story progresses. I hope we get casting news of the Reeds soon. I fear they might try to scuttle them altogether, which I think would really hurt Bran’s storyline.

It will air in Spring 2012 – most likely the April – June timeframe they used for Season 1.

A few thoughts on casting and their timeline:
      1. I think they have some of these roles cast for a while and slowly leak the information.
      2. Since they shoot in several locations (Northern Ireland, Croatia, Iceland this year), they tend to film all the like scenes in the same location at the same time. Most people seem to think Pyke/Iron Islands will be filmed in Croatia. They’re currently filming in Northern Ireland (where they do Winterfell, the Wall, some indoor scenes). So, it’s not that late.
      3. It’s a long shoot and Balon doesn’t do a whole lot in Season 2. At least in the book, there are only a few scenes with him. So, it totally makes sense they could cast him a little later.

        I can’t wait until Spring!

And I’m going to post this again because I finally past RW in book 3 and I feel like I’ve been let in on the best thing ever!

I can TOTALLY see him as Balon. He’s got that hard, stern look to him. Totally Ironborn.

Good choice from what I know of him. I love how Game of Thrones has been casting well versed actors and not “popular” people to boost ratings and such. For the most part, not all, but I have no idea who MOST of these people are before they started. Jon Snow being the main one.

  • John

I think by looks alone he would have made a better Stannis

  • wgalvira

Allrght!!. Another barbaric character added to the show.
