Ready to meet Jackson Avery’s mom?
Actor-director Debbie Allen has been cast in the upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy, playing Catherine Avery. The move brings Allen out from behind the camera on Grey’s, where she’s previously directed three episodes of the show (not entirely unlike how Eric Stolz directed an episode of Private Practice before appearing in Grey’s).
Allen has a slew of TV directing credits to her name (Everybody Hates Chris, That’s So Raven) and is best known as an actress for her work in the movie Fame (both versions). She’ll lend some insight into Jackson’s family in the fifth episode of the eighth season, which premieres on Sept. 22.

YES! =)
Perfect choice! Hoping she really adds to the humerous side of Grey’s…as long as the writers do their part, she’ll be great in this role.~~~~~~•• Mys’ingleparentm’atch.C óM~•great!
Will be glad to see her in front of the camera! She’s great.
Oh, now this is going to be funny if Debbie brings herself and all that attitude to the character. lol
You are absolutely right! I love Debbie and her sister Phylicia Allen. They are both very talented women, but Debbie has a wonderful sense of humor and incredible acting chops…
There goes my theory that Avery and Meredith are siblings…
why would you think Meredith and Avery are related when Meredith and Lexi are sisters and Lexi and Avery are sleeping together???
Meredith and Lexie are half-sisters (same dad, different moms), so if Meredith and Avery were half-siblings with same mom, it wouldn’t affect Lexie and Avery from hooking up.
That would be creepy if Avery was sleeping with his sister’s sister.
Were you thinking Avery was the child of Meredith’s mom and the Chief? That would be way too much soap opera-ness.
That’s a strange theory…
Chris, were you thinking like me that the Chief and Ellis Grey had a love child?
Still could be – maybe he was put up for adoption. I like the thought of him being Merediths brother by the chief and her mother?
No way could Ellis have had a love child back during that time period & done it secretly. She was way too much of a hot-shot doctor & in the public eye to have ever pulled that off.
OK…how would you play this?? Avery was the love child of Ellis and the Chief…given up for adoption?
That was a rumor floated around when Avery first showed up. Maybe too many people found out and Shonda switched storylines for him. Still would be an interesting plot twist and maybe give Meredith a story other than breaking up with Mcdreamy again.
Maybe that’s why another biracial actor was brought on? His character’s name just completely leapt out of my head, but he’s the super-cute nurse that Bailey’s been getting her groove on with.
Can’t wait for Debbie Allen to appear. She’s an amazing actress. Come to think of it she’s a quadruple talent actress, director, choreographer, dancer
She looks awesome! I love her work.
I loves me some Miss Debbie. This will make up for her not being on any of the Top 20 SYTYCD shows. I can’t wait to see her, and I hope she’s in for more than one episode.
Not pleased about this choice. She’s NOT a good actress, but then again, neither is Avery.. just eye candy.
Avery is a character, not an actor.
Sheesh, I think you knew what the comment meant, no need to be so picky.
I don’t think it’s picky at all – you should stay consistent within your sentences. How hard is it to say “She’s not a good actress, but then again, neither is the actor who plays Avery”?
yawn.
they could have picked someone else double YAWN
They should’ve gotten Debbie’s sister – Phylicia Rashad!
Great choice. Debbie Allen is an amazing actress & will get Avery in check.
OMG! Debbie Allen as Jackson’s mom is going to be so fun…i can’t wait to see what this brings to the story!
She also directed three episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” so far, of which two were last season episodes.
Great choice.
This proves my theory that the majority of posters do no read the article before they rush to comment.
As far as theories go, yours sucks!
Wow looking forward to dat. Grey’s anomy u’re de best.
Awesome…
