Stephen King’s best-seller Under the Dome is headed to Showtime.
The network has agreed to buy a script for a series based on the novel, about a small Maine town that becomes trapped under a mysterious invisible force field. A corrupt local politician uses the crisis to seize power as the environment starts to turn toxic and resources become scarce. Steven Spielberg is on board as an executive producer through DreamWorks TV, but there’s no screenwriter on board yet.

Loved the book – could be a good series. Will watch.
Oh, but I hope it will be a miniseries that tells the story of the book, and not a unlimited series that wears the story out and changes it to accommodate for a longer run. This was one of King’s best books in decades for me, and I’m strongly hoping for a faithful adaptation.
I was thinking one of those “one season” long miniseries. I feel like it will need more than 4 episodes, but less than 9 or 10.
This is very interesting. The fact it will be on Showtime sounds like it SHOULD be a great series.
It could run for 3-4 seasons but no more than that.
Good book. Thought that the cause of the dome was a little…”Really? That’s what did it? OK.”
A series is really the only way to do it justice.
Wasn’t that the plot of the Simpsons Movie? I’m pretty sure the book came after.
True that it did, but King was writing the book since the 90′s I believe. I’m not sure exactly WHEN, but it was partially written before The Simpsons movie.
That’s like comparing Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter and then saying Harry Potter stole from Lord of The Rings
LotR was written in the 50′s, so unless Rowling traveled to the past when she wrote the Potter books then she was ripping off The Lord of the Rings. I mean come on how hard is it to google something before running your mouth.
There;s at least one and probably more science fiction short stories about being towns trapped under a dome. The one I’m thinking of predates both King and the Simpsons by decades.
and what’s the thoughts about the casting the miniseries based on this great book? I predict the picks for James Rennie, the villian will be many. But my ideal choice for Barbie is Patrick Wilson and how about Al Pacino for Rennie and Eliabeth Banks for Jullia.
Um, Julia is supposed to be 15 years older than Barbie. How about Diane Lane for Julia and someone 35ish for Barbie?
Kathy Bates as Rose?
Big Jim Rennie is definitely jon Goodman. Barbie should be Peter Saarsguard
Loved the book. But let’s hope they can come up with a better, or at least more involving, reason for the Dome’s existence. I understand that King’s main concern wasn’t the Dome actually was, it’s what the dome did to the people involved. But the main “reveal” , if you can call it that, left more to be desired. Still…love to hear they’ll be adapting this one. I did enjoy it.
I could have sworm I read on EW that HBO had purchased the rights a short time before or after the book came out??? Just saying not, slamming Showtime they are knocking on HBO’s door with some of the shows they are putting out now.
John Goodman seems like an obvious choice for Big Jim Rennie and he would be a good one. I wouldn’t mind seeing Clancy Brown myself. I really hope they branch away from the plot of the book, it was a good idea hampered by some lazy characters (Barbie seems like a typical King hero), astoundingly bad segues (the point from the dog’s point of view where dogs apparently see ghosts) and necrophelia. That last part was just disgusting. As if the characters brain tumor induced violence wasn’t intense enough. And don’t get me started on how poorly written the teenagers were. Haven’t seen young people done that poorly since “I am Charlotte Simmons.” At any rate this could still be a fascinating series, provided they don’t go past three or four seasons.
Let me tell you how it ends, Homer and Bart save the day.
YEECH… the book is one of the poorest offerings from Mr. King. As it barely withstood it’s own length, there is not enough good material for a miniseries or any other revisiting of this story. Bummer.
I liked it better when it was called “The Simpsons Movie”.
Give it up for David Spade everybody! Using a phrase from a 16+ years ago SNL Weekend Update sketch. Awesome!
This should be exciting, Showtime is a good sign! It will be interesting to see how they handle the ending though. I thought the film ending to ‘The Mist’ was better than King’s short story, so perhaps they will change this one too.
