Old fans of The Shield who have yet to sample FX’s powerful drama Sons of Anarchy may want to tune into the fourth season premiere on Sept. 6: Benito Martinez and David Rees Snell are appearing in multiple episodes!

Martinez (Capt. David Aceveda on The Shield) will play a right-hand man in a Mexican cartel. He’ll show up in episode two. Meanwhile, Snell — best known to Farmington followers as Ronnie — will depict an ATF agent who’s helping to investigate SAMCRO. He’s featured in the premiere episode, which begins with the SAMCRO boys leaving the pokey.

SOA, which was created by former Shield scribe Kurt Sutter, also features Kenny Johnson (Shield’s Lem) as Kozik.

    Man I miss the Shield.

Alright, I guess I was over thinking when I wanted Walton Goggins and Michael Chiklis. I still love Ronnie though.

  • bbc

Impromptu poll… How do you like your Walton Goggins… Shield style or Justified style? Me, I prefer Boyd Crowder. Thoughts?

    • rowan729

      Justified, definitely.

    • Josh

It’s a tough call – I think I’ll have to wait until “Justified” ends or Boyd Crowder gets killed, so I can assess the entire arc of his character against Shane Vendrell’s before I could make a decision.

      • Matt W.

So far I’m with Shane because of the way things ended for him and with Lem. Like Josh said though, we’ll see when Justified is over.

Boyd Crowder because he is more psychological and manipulative. A definate step-up for Goggins and well deserving of an emmy. To me, he’s a better villian than Vic Mackey. I know people aren’t going to agree, but it’s true.

      • Josh

I think Crowder is more of a crowd-pleaser, with his over-the-top antics and outsize charisma, but I think Vendrell is a far more realistic character, which is probably what lessens his appeal.

      • Brett

I prefer Mackey as a villain because he was much more realistic. “Justified” is more of a cartoon with live actors.

      • Eric D

Don’t get me wrong. I was the biggest Shield fan. I thought Shane’s character was a lot more dynamic than Vic towards the end. But I think that Boyd Crowder is more interesting and Goggins is doing a great job being shifted into the main villian instead of a sidekick. I see your point, though the Shield is far from a realistic cop show compared to say the Wire. Both Justified and The Sheild are just pulp entertainment. SOA kicks ass though. One of my new favorites.

Justified as satirical tone about criminal life. That’s why it’s seems to feel like a cartoon. As of now it is one the top three crime dramas on TV along with southland and The Closer. Breaking Bad I see it more as a drama. Boardwalk Empire was in The supranos shadow in season 1 and got too much hype.which allowed a gem like FX Terriers to be ignored.

      Boyd Crowder!

    yeeeeesssssss!!!

There is going to be so much ‘The Shield’ in SoA now, I guess I am finally going to have to take a look. I always thought Ronnie was pretty awesome.

I was alos hoping that Vic Mackey was back! I sure would like to know how he’s doing with his desk job. Saw Goggins on a few episodes of In the Heat of the Night (from the 80′s) that rerun on WGN… He was a Hihh School kid in Season 2′s Joe Don Baker episodes.

  • steve

Dang… sorry for the typo’s. I promise, I am educated

  • MCS

I am stoked that Rees Snell is back in. Loved him in the Shield

  • catniphabit

Whooo-whooo! Catnip for diehard Shield fans.(hint to EW-try another way to phrase it than “old fans”) Anyone know if Kenny Johnson’s (who is still catnip to me for a different reason-DAMN) character is sticking around? On the finale, Sutter wrote it so that Tig could still change his mind (BTW, the reveal on the S3 finale about Tig’s grudge w/Johnson’s character because of “her” was brilliant). Sometimes I forget how much I miss the Shield until I read something like this. I’m even more psyched up for S4 of SOA!

  • JesseBaker

Excellent news. Big fan of David Rees Snell and glad to see him back on my tv screen. Same with Benito Martinez, who is an underrated actor and one the high points of “The Shield”.

As for Kenny Johnson, sadly Sutter (before he deleted his twitter account) stated that he would only be in about 3-4 episodes this season; Johnson landed the role of the male love interest on NBC’s Prime Suspect and was unavailable for the full season. However, Sutter stated that he was leaving the door open for future appearances by the actor in season five.
