'Walking Dead' showrunner Glen Mazzara talks about season 2 (but not about how he got his job)

Walking Dead executive producer Glen Mazzara has teased the second season of AMC’s zombie show in an interview on the AMC website. The new showrunner explained that the show’s second season will follow Robert Kirkman’s original comic series by in large part taking place at a farm belonging to a character named Hershel. “In the graphic novel the story that takes place on Hershel’s farm is really only a few issues,” said Mazzara. “We’ve been able to mine that for many episodes, and we’re very excited about the depth to which we’re able to push the characters, the different dynamics that we’re able to explore. Our approach to our group of survivors when they reach Hershel’s farm is that they are a plague unto themselves. Nothing goes right for Hershel once Rick and his band show up. They make the zombie apocalypse look like kids in a candy story. What’s interesting is that if this was a show solely about Hershel, Rick and his band would really be the antagonists. And that’s been really surprising because every action that Rick and his band take is completely logical, but you’ll certainly sympathize with Hershel.”

Mazzara also confirmed that the comic’s psychotic character “the Governor” would be appearing on the show at some point. When asked what element from the comic he was most looking forward to adapting, the executive producer replied, “I am dying to meet the Governor.” Finally, Mazzara announced that the fourth episode of the new season will feature “a fantastic scene … that I believe will make every fanboy happy. It’ll give them hope that if they can make it through the zombie apocalypse, they can get laid off a hot chick too.”

The Walking Dead showrunner did not discuss how he came by his job, an unsurprising omission given the provenance of the interview. As Walking Dead fans know, Mazzara is replacing the show creator Frank Darabont, who stepped down from his post in July for reasons that remain unclear.

The second season of the Walking Dead will premiere on AMC, Oct. 16. Gorehounds who can’t wait that long for their zombie fix may care to note that a Robert Kirkman co-penned novel called The Rise of the Governor – which details the origins of the Walking Dead villain — goes on sale Oct. 11.

When they reach the prison, that’s when the show is gonna rock. Hopefully.

    • Dumbfounded

      That sounds amazing.

      It is.
I finished the first comic book compendium (first 48 issues) two weeks ago, and I am only starting to recover from it. I may break down and get the trades as it is a long wait for the second one. If the show follows the comics a bit more, then we are in for a helluva roller-coaster. I have not felt so messed up from a movie, show (except for Breaking Bad, just awesome) or book like I have from that series. I finally got into because of this show and now, I am hooked on both mediums. So much brutal awesomeness to come.

As long as there are tons of zombies getting blown up, idc where they are.

    • Linda

Most people that would pay to see this have nothing to worry about from Zombies. They are looking for brains. Just sayin

      • me

Luckily, it’s on TV, so it’s free… and awesome.

      • Nong

Good luck in your search for a personality Linda, looks like a long road ahead of you…

I’m so pissed that Matt Weiner strong armed AMC to paying him at the expense of Walking Dead and Breaking Bad’s budgets. I can’t believe they let Frank Darabont go. Utterly classless and poor decision making from top to bottom in their handling of the situtation.

    Can’t wait!

Can’t say the manner in which Mazzara refers to the show gives me confidence in his abilities and focus versus Darabont’s. Frank took the show seriously and geeked out over it without taking away from the depth of the story. Mazzara’s, “a fantastic scene … that I believe will make every fanboy happy. It’ll give them hope that if they can make it through the zombie apocalypse, they can get laid off a hot chick too.” comment makes it look like a frat boy is running the show now. We’ll see…

Different Justin than the earlier one…

    • WI

I would agree Justin – I am excited for the second season and really dug season 1….hopefully this guy doesn’t lose sight of what makes the show/story great

    • jay

I think anybody that’s read the series from the beginning knows exactly what he’s talking about with that scene. And he’s right.

    Wait, what about Michonne!??

Doesn’t she come before the Governor?

I hope they’re not planning on leaving her out of the show.

    • jen

she does come before the Governor, but not until after Herschel’s farm when they are at the prison. They can’t just leave her out especially in the Governor story line, she’s pretty important there.

“It’ll give them hope that if they can make it through the zombie apocalypse, they can get laid off a hot chick too.”

This new showrunner sounds like an idiot.

    • Tajah

The world’s destroyed, death all around, but as long as a guy can get laid, then it’s all right.

      Sigh.

      • psyche

For some reason it brings to mind the useless (and off-putting) ~5 minute sex scene from the Watchman. It makes you feel like the director is a little boy going “whee! boobies!”

    • Peter

I’m glad I already gave up on the show, because this comment alone makes it sound like it will be a bigger letdown than Heroes.

    • davey

That’s a terrible quote to be sure, however I am looking forward to what’s in store for season 2 – I hope it’s worth the wait!!!

    • jay

I know exactly what scene he’s referencing from the book. His wording was kind of clumsy, but it is a great scene.

      • Adele

Cathleen Rittereiser – I had tears in my eyes after looking at these pucitres. I wasn’t there, but these pucitres made me feel like I was, they’re so moving. You really captured the joy, and Melissa looked just radiant. I also loved the fun, family group photos. Well done.

“Mazzara is replacing the show creator Frank Darabont, who stepped down from his post in July for reasons that remain unclear.”

It’s pretty common knowledge that Darabont was fired. The show budget was drastically reduced for season 2, Darabont wasn’t pleased and let the network know how he felt. His reward was a pink slip.

    • Shadowlands

Yes, but that’s only speculation. He’s never confirmed it, so they’re ensuring that they don’t get in legal trouble

  • Steve

Doesn’t setting the show on a farm for most of the season pretty much prove AMC is now trying to do the show on the cheap?

    • Sean

Yes, it does. Hopefully they can make do with that limited setting.

    • Arun

  • WomenWatchToo

Makes one wonder if the showrunner is aware that women watch the show, too, and not just to see some adolescent fantasy played out for the fanboys.

  • cinnarose

Frank Darabont was fired, there’s no mystery surrounding that. He chose integrity and quality in his production, and AMC fired him.
