MTV cancels 'Hard Times of RJ Berger'

Hard times, indeed: MTV has canceled The Hard Times of RJ Berger after a two-season run. The edgy comedy, which chronicled the exploits of a dorky-yet-well-hung high school student (Paul Iacono), grabbed more than three million viewers in its second-season premiere in March, but May’s season finale drew less than one million people.

The network has no shortage of scripted comedy in its pipeline: It will debut the horror-ific Death Valley on Aug. 29 and the animated Good Vibes in October (along with the return of Beavis and Butt-head), while the dramedy I Just Want My Pants Back and an adaptation of Brit hit The Inbetweeners are slated for 2012.

New 'Vampire Diaries' promo: Look who's in bed together

The CW has released a new season 3 promo for The Vampire Diaries, which returns Sept. 15, and it not only gives us looks at Bad Stefan and Sad Elena in action, it also teases a half-naked Caroline mounting Tyler in bed. WHAT?! I’m all for this coupling, and want it to happen, but it can’t happen this quickly can it? Then again, this is The Vampire Diaries, and EPs Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec know how to move.

Watch the video below. What do you think: Dream foreplay or real foreplay?

And don’t you get the feeling that Stefan is telling Damon “Let… me… go” so Damon (and therefore Elena) will stay clear of Klaus, and not because Stefan is too far gone?

Also, did ghost Vicki and Anna dye Jeremy’s hair a darker color as he slept?  READ FULL STORY »

'General Hospital': Who does accident-prone Jason think he is now? -- EXCLUSIVE TEASER

Okay, someone really needs to keep Jason from getting behind the wheel of cars. Now that Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) went and got himself into yet another auto accident on General Hospital, the women in his life (his mom, his ex, his fiancee — oy, there are so many!) are now dreaming of what life could have been, had his memory not been wiped clean in the first place.

This makes my head hurt. Clearly, I’m not alone: Check out Jason’s “injuries” in this action-packed promo:

Radiohead, Lady Antebellum will be musical guests for hosts Alec Baldwin, Melissa McCarthy on 'Saturday Night Live'

Alec Baldwin will be in some rockin’ good company when he hosts Saturday Night Live for a record-breaking 16th time on Sept. 24. Grammy-winners Radiohead, who last stopped by Studio 8H in 2000 with host Kate Hudson, will help Baldwin kick off the 37th season of SNL as musical guests. Radiohead’s latest record, The King of Limbs, was released back in February.

The following week, on Oct. 1, chart-topping country trio Lady Antebellum will make their SNL debut in support of their upcoming album Own The Night, on the same evening that Bridesmaids‘ break-out star Melissa McCarthy hosts the show for the first time. Do we hear a Hillary Scott/Melissa McCarthy/Kristen Wiig rendition of Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On”? We can only hope.

Less than 24 hours after So You Think You Can Dance frontrunner Melanie Moore received 47 percent of the vote to be named America’s Favorite Dancer, she shared her feelings with EW. “I feel so blessed,” she says. Then in uncharacteristic fashion, the Georgia pixie admitted that she was confident going in to the finale because she was ”out for blood.” So what else did Melanie have to say that will surprise you? What was her one complaint about the show, and where does she see herself after the tour (hint: there may be a watermelon coming her way!)? Read Melanie’s interview after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'The Shield' showrunner sells crime pilot to CBS

Categories:

Shawn Ryan has lined up a new crime drama project with a fringe science twist.

The showrunner behind FX’s The Shield and Fox’s Chicago Code is teaming with Criminal Minds writer-producer Simon Mirren for a new CBS pilot. The pitch: A geneticist uses his newfound discovery that he has the “psychopath gene” to help the FBI catch killers.

The network has ordered the untitled project as a “put pilot” (a promise to shoot a pilot that contains substantial penalties for the network if it’s never aired, which increases the likelihood the project will receive a series order). Ryan previously teamed with CBS as an executive producer on The Unit.

'Sons of Anarchy' showrunner claims AMC fired Frank Darabont because 'Mad Men' 'gutted' AMC

Sutter

UPDATED: AMC’s year got off to an awkward start, beginning with very public contract negotiations with Mad Men. Then came the unexpected departure of showrunner Frank Darabont from The Walking Dead, and the revelation that the network was apparently playing hardball with Breaking Bad over a shortened final season. Toss in the audience-frustrating season finale of The Killing, and the network looks like a genuine three-ring circus, albeit a circus defined by moral ambiguity. Last night, Sons of Anarchy showrunner Kurt Sutter drove his metaphorical motorcycle into this metaphorical circus and metaphorically shot the elephant so he could cook it on his metaphorical spit. Metaphors! READ FULL STORY »

Meet the new Toddler Lily on 'Modern Family' -- EXCLUSIVE PHOTO

Look who seems pretty chipper these days? Meet the new Baby, er, Toddler Lily on ABC’s Modern Family. She’s 4-year-old Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and she’ll play the adopted daughter of Cameron (Eric Stonestreet, pictured) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) this fall.

We’ll let fellow kid actor Nolan Gould (Luke Dunphy) comment on the comedy’s latest cast edition: ”She’s really adorable,” he told EW. “The first day I met her, she was kind of hiding behind her mom’s leg and I brought out my iPad and started playing with it and she comes out and she’s like [gasp] and started playing with it. It was really cute. I haven’t worked with her yet. But she is really happy. She says lines. She does everything. She’s really cute.” READ FULL STORY »

Benjamin Bratt returning to 'Modern Family' -- EXCLUSIVE

Wondering if Benjamin Bratt will return to Modern Family this season? You can bet on it. EW has learned that Bratt’s Javier — ex-husband of Gloria (Sofia Vergara) and absentee father of Manny (Rico Rodriguez) — will spend a day at the races with the Pritchett-Delgado clan. In an episode airing this fall, “Jay (Ed O’Neill) feels possessive of Manny for the first time and wonders what he’s allowed to do and what he isn’t as his step-dad,” hints exec producer Christopher Lloyd. “The [racetrack] backdrop becomes kind of a competition between Jay and Javier for Manny.” Modern Family returns to ABC for season 3 on Sept. 21.

It’s beginning to look a lot like fall TV time! And I’m so excited, I could scream! But that would be really awkward for the person in the office next to me, I imagine.

Instead, I’ll sit here and wait for your questions to pop up in the Spoiler Room inbox (spoilerroom@ew.com).

Clearly my brain is fried. So I’ll leave you to read. Remember to send in your inquiries and follow me on Twitter for more awkward thoughts (and maybe some scoop): @EWSandraG.

‘VAMPIRE DIARIES’: EP TEASES MATT’S PAINFUL ROAD AHEAD

We wouldn’t wish suffering on anyone… except for maybe The Vampire Diaries’ Matt Donovan. But that’s only because actor Zach Roerig guts us when he gets teary. TVD exec producer Julie Plec almost got our eyes wet describing how Matt will figure into the season 3 story line that has Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) seeing the ghosts of his dead exes — including Matt’s late sister Vicki (Kayla Ewell). READ FULL STORY »

'Friday Night Lights' bonus: Hear Coach Taylor's hidden farewell speech

Categories: Friday Night Lights

It’s been exactly four weeks since Friday Night Lights sailed beautifully through the big goalposts in the sky, so here’s another excuse to moisten those tear ducts. As it turns out, the ending of the original script for the finale included a heartfelt farewell speech by Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) that was to play over the moving montage that showed where our characters wound up eight months later. But when the producers reviewed that sequence during the editing process, “every one of those little moments was much more than what it felt like it was going to be in the script,” explains executive producer Jason Katims. “Because the images ran so long, it was hard for us to figure a graceful way to fit in the speech. Also, I just wanted to let the images stand for themselves…. I loved the speech and the way Kyle did it —  and it was one of the things I was really looking forward to in the finale — but after looking at it both ways, I realized that the episode was stronger without it.”

Coach’s sentimental send-off may have been benched for the finale, but it was included on the season 5 DVD as an extra. Make that a well-hidden extra. READ FULL STORY »
