BET to dedicate Sunday's programming to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Even the expected heavy rains from Hurricane Irene won’t put a damper on BET’s plans to honor Martin Luther King on Sunday.

King’s memorial was due to be unveiled on Sunday to mark the 48th anniversary of his “I Have a Dream” speech at the National Mall. Those plans have since been cancelled following the news that Hurricane Irene would make its way up the east coast. But BET says it will continue its plans to air programs to commemorate the King’s role as a civil rights leader, like Alpha Man: The Brotherhood of MLK and the documentary Michelle Obama on a Mission: Impact Africa, which follows the first lady on her travels through Bostwana and South Africa.

Hurricane Irene: Filming permits revoked for NYC on Sunday

Categories: Television

While the show is currently expected to go on for the Broadway community this weekend, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment tells EW it has revoked filming permits that had been issued for New York City for Sunday, Aug. 28, due to Hurricane Irene. The six small productions that were scheduled to shoot this weekend had already voluntarily rearranged their schedules because of the weather. Those include the reality shows Hoarders and Clean House, the film adaptation of Leslye Headland’s play Bachelorette (starring Isla Fisher, Kirsten Dunst, and Lizzy Caplan), and the untitled follow-up from Like Crazy writer/director Drake Doremus starring Guy Pierce and Amy Ryan.

If Irene hits New York City hard and causes power outages, flooding, and transportation issues, more TV and film productions could be affected Monday. Just earlier this week, Mayor Mike Bloomberg announced that a record-breaking 23 primetime TV shows film in the city’s five boroughs.

The episode will take place at The Mob Museum, one of two new mafia-themed museums opening in the city. (The first, The Las Vegas Mob Experience, is already open at the Tropicana; The Mob Museum opens in February.)

Also, former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman will have a cameo in the episode. CSI returns on Sept. 21 and, of course, has a new star on board with Ted Danson joining the team.

Anderson Cooper reveals what's on his Must List: Does it include Gerard Depardieu?

Anderson Cooper is a huge pop culture junkie. The CNN anchor and talk show host (his daytime chat series Anderson premieres on Sept. 12 in syndication) loves to talk entertainment, especially if it involves the Real Housewives franchise. Naturally, EW asked Cooper to give us his Must List for right now which, sadly, did not include Gerard Depardieu, the source of his recent giggle fit. Read below for Cooper’s current pop culture obsessions…

ANDERSON COOPER’S MUST LIST:

Sleep No More — “It’s an interactive play that is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s like being in a David Lynch movie set in a 1940’s hotel. The audience moves around freely, in silence, wearing masks. I try to describe it, and end up sounding crazy. I end up saying simply, ‘Go see it.’” READ FULL STORY »

Rosie O'Donnell wants to talk to you about her new OWN talk show -- VIDEO

The first promo for Rosie O’Donnell’s new talk show on OWN was just released, and… it features a lot more talking than showing. “How are you? Good to see you!” greets the 49-year-old comedienne/actress/activist/etc. “I haven’t seen you in, like, a decade. Where you been?” (Well, Rosie, technically we saw you on Sunday on Curb Your Enthusiasm, competing with Larry David for the same woman, but clearly you’re referring to the ending of The Rosie O’Donnell Show in 2002.) After assuring us that she’s not Kathy Bates or Roseanne Barr, the high-decibel Queen of Nice explains that as a mother of teenagers, she needed to get back to work, and her return to TV will involve “a lot of entertainment and comedy.” Check it out below, as her youngest daughter Vivienne kinda-sorta plays along. The Rosie Show debuts Oct. 10.  READ FULL STORY »

'Good Morning America' inching up on 'Today' as most-watched morning show

It appears morning show king Today has some major competition in Good Morning America following a spike that has narrowed the ratings gap to the smallest margin in four years, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Today – whose co-host line-up changed in June when Meredith Vieira’s spot on the show was filled by Ann Curry — still leads by at least 500,000 in total viewers and in the advertiser-attracting 25-54 demo. But GMA is hot on its trail. Today has averaged 5.03 million viewers daily since June, up 6.7 percent from a year earlier (according to Nielsen), while GMA has experienced a 15 percent boost, averaging 4.46 million.

It’s undeniable to regular GMA viewers that even though Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson were big losses for the morning show, hosts George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts have brought a new flavor. A GMA EP gave credit to revamped cooking and entertainment segments under the new hosts, but is it more than that, readers? Tell us in comments.
