Showtime orders third season of 'The Big C'

Tags: , News

Showtime has ordered a third season of The Big C, a comedy starring Laura Linney as a suburban momma who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The next 10 episodes will go into production starting early next year for debut sometime in the early spring.

The second season ends on Sept. 26. It also stars Oliver Platt.

Looks like we’re getting a miracle in remission storyline.

    • Adam

Or, the treatment she’s getting is working. In this passed Monday’s episode we learned that.

  • Pogi

Yay! That means Cathy (Laura Linney) doesn’t die yet! I’ve loved this season. It cranked up its comedy factor by a mile, and I’ve just loved it. (Not that I could say that about Weeds…which has plummeted like crazy this season).

    • DUH

unfortunately, WEEDS has been plummeting for a very long time. i think there are probably now more bad seasons then good, but i keep holding out wishing it will get better.

  • Julie

Lame. I’m over this show already. So overrated.

    • Diane

After this season’s mess, I completely agree.

    • Vago

      Enjoy DWTS and Survivor

  • Shecky

I’ve only seen episodes from the current season but….if the woman is supposed to be dying of cancer, why doesn’t she seem the slightest bit ill? To me she seems like happy, perky Laura Linney. The cancer angle is just that–an angle, a plot device. In other words, the show’s fairly bogus, a light comedy using terminal illness as a contrivance.

Wanna convince me otherswise? Show me Laura looking really sick. Have her vomiting. Have her so weak she can barely get out of bed. Not all the time but sometime. Show me her really bad days. Don’t just say, “She has cancer!” and then show me her coaching the swim team!

    • Jessie

Obviously, Ms. Shecky, you don’t know cancer. Not everyone w/ cancer vomits. Do you actually want to see her vomiting anyway? I don’t. The show is supposed to be a comedy anyway. It’s supposed to be satirical. We’re supposed to laugh. So, LAUGH! Also, you say you’ve only seen episodes from the current season. Check out season 1.

Um… Learn about cancer. When people have cancer, they are not sick until the bitter end. What makes them sick is the cure/treatment.

I haven’t kept up with the show, but last I saw she isn’t going about this in the conventional way so it makes sense for her to be pretty perky and normal other than depression and emotional ills.

    • NagQuita

I am a cancer survivor and I never looked sick during the process. People were usually shocked when they learned I had cancer. I did no vomiting after treatments, my hair never fell, and I never lost weight. I was just very sleepy for 1-2 days after chemo. I also met people during my treatments who also did not look sick. I was also not an early stager.

    • Vago

U need to stick to reality TV…stupid and gross

    • Nannette

I so agree! To those watchers who have or are experiencing cancer for real or have loved someone who has, this unrealistic, pretty and perky portrayal of terminal cancer by Linney is a hard pill to swallow.

  • Buffy Freak

I’m with Julie…too many characters that are ridiculously quirky and not at all realistic or are such stereotypes…Cynthia Nixon, the cranky old lady across the street, Cathy’s brother, Andrea the sassy black girl. The last straw for me was a couple of weeks ago with the fetus funeral…so far fetched. I do like the Hugh Dancy character but he can’t be long for this world.

    • Veronica

Name a TV show that is not “so far fetched”? Come on!? It’s a comedy. It’s fiction. It’s TV. I’m beginning to think most of you watch the show hoping to learn everything there is to learn about cancer. The show’s on Showtime, not some learning channel. Let’s just sit back and enjoy the show! Geez-Louise!

      • Buffy Freak

Wow thanks for the TV lesson Veronica…I’m well aware it’s fiction…I just expect them to act somewhat like real people. And clearly, based on other comments, I’m not the only one.

I love this show but Oliver Platt makes me miss Huff. Why that show got cancelled and Weeds continues on is beyond me. Miss United States of Tara, too, but the final season was lame. Couldn’t stand the Bryce alter. Second season was awesome. If it had to end, I would have loved the ending of Marshall dancing with Max in the yard.

  • Woot

Ugh I wished they cancelled this show and kept US of Tara instead.

  • brad

I love Weeds and the Big C

  • Vago

I love the story line involving Cathy, hubby and son…and the gay guy this season has been an interesting aside. Glad to see Cynthia Nixon gone and it would be better to limit schizoid brother’s time…his schtick is getting old. Laura Linney has the Midas touch and Oliver Platt – one of the most underrated actors around – plays off of her beautifully. Good news it’s coming back.

  • JOE

    Lyne,
Great interview Thursday morning on Craig Ferguson, but next time pick mouth organ.

  • john

The big C and Nurse Jackie and Dexter keep me subscribing to Showtime, Weeds however has overstayed its welcome.

  • Melissa in CA

*SPOILER ALERT* It doesn’t star Oliver Platt anymore! Unless he’s back like Marlene. I can’t believe no one at EW is writing about the finale last night….

    • txan

totally agree – I was dumbfounded, and looking for comments,,, well, there aren’t any.

  • Paige

I think Paul will be back.. it’s Andrea that I suspect won’t be…
