ABC's 'Revenge' pilot offered free on Kindle

Tags: News

Now this is an interesting way to market a new show: ABC is offering the pilot of fall soap Revenge for free — as a script download on Kindle.

You can read the pilot script for the series on the device from now until its Sept. 21 premiere date. Networks normally try all sorts of summer marketing stunts to build buzz for a new show, but offering the script as a free beach read is really unusual, and suggests  confidence in the show’s writing (or at least it’s ability to hook the viewer reader). The story of Revenge is sort of like The Count of Monte Cristo re-imagined as a modern Hamptons soap and you can get the script here.

This show looks pretty bad from the previews

    • AB

Yeah, the best things from the preview are her dress and the background music. Kind of sad.

  • maiv

interesting. im actually reading this article on my kindle now!

This is a soap? Judging from the weird ass poster of the woman who appears to be half human half briar patch I thought this was a Twilightesque fantasy show. I’m being serious.

I read it on Kindle. It’s like it was written by a 12 year old. Seriously.

      • Paul

I also just finished it, and found it to be very well done. I hadn’t given this show a glance before, but now I’m anxious to see how it plays out.

  • Lenn

I seriously thought the headline made it sound that the actual show pilot would be viewable on the Kindle’s black e-ink format with a slow refresh rate in some cruel joke.

    • Amanda

If you skip to the last page of the script, there’s a link to a website and a code for you to put in to watch the actual pilot online.

  • Nick

This is a really good idea. I read the script about a month ago and it was really well written. Made me want to see the show. It does come across as a good summer read!

    • Tom

I checked it out, although briefly skimmed most of it. I get the feeling that I have seen this exact same show/movie before. I don’t know. I’m going to probably skip it.

Tried reading it on my Kindle, but found it a bit confusing. I could be I can’t follow THIS story in script format. I deleted it. I’ll wait to see what the word on the actual show is. I hope it finds some kind of success because I still think there is value in scripted programming, as opposed to most of it being replaced by “reality” shows.

  • Ash

cool poster. The show doesn’t look that good though.

  • M

If you download the script just flip to the very end. It gives you a website and code to watch the pilot online!

  • leo

i wish them the best luck for success!

  • Dan

“its” ability, not “it’s ability.” Leave it to EW, even in a post about reading, to contribute to illiteracy.

  • jmag

looks reallly bad…will check out script..thx for the tip

  • Jay

Showtime’s Nurse Jackie was the first show to put its pilot script on the kindle. Two years ago just before the series premiere.

  • Drew

A&E did this with the Glades when it came out. I still think it’s an interesting idea.

  • chris

Just watched it and liked it. Theres definitely potential and I hope it is not canned after a few episodes like other shows have in that awful timeslot.

  • Larry in NoHo

Serial dramas are a bad idea, especially on broadcast television where the continuity will be interrupted numerous times by repeats, TV specials, holiday specials, etc. Plus this show looks cheesy. This show and Charlie’s Angels will be ABC’s first casualties.
