Aaron Sorkin's HBO cable news drama ordered to series

He’s back: HBO is giving Aaron Sorkin’s cable news project a green light: The Social Network and West Wing writer’s behind-the-scenes drama about a fictional cable news network just earned a series order at the network.

The series centers on a cable news anchor (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), his newsroom staff (Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski) and their boss (Sam Waterston).

The logline: “Together they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.” Basically: The backstage cable network drama of Sorkin’s Sports Night combined with a probable dash of West Wing-style media politics.

The project is officially untitled but has been working under the name More as the Story Develops (that will, thankfully, change; Sorkin typically comes up with more punchy titles). Sorkin is executive producing along with Scott Rudin and Alan Poul.

    Great cast

This sounds fantastic, I’ll take it over True Blood and Boardwalk Empire that’s for certain.

Aaron Sorkin should ALWAYS be writing a TV show.

I just wish it was not pay cable! But that’s what DVD sets are for, no? Excellent idea and great cast (so many with theatre chops). I’d watch anything with Waterston!

I thought this at first but HBO is so good that its worth the money. With all its original programming and documentaries and the ability to watch On Demand or HBO Go its definitely worth the $10 a month.

Can somebody please explain to me why Hollywood is shoving Olivia Munn down our throats? She’s very unlikable and very untalented. I can name numerous actresses who have looks, charisma and talent who could have been cast instead.

Send them your info, Larry, maybe they’ll give you a call next time they’re casting. In the meantime, you’re free to watch or not watch. No one’s FORCING anyone on you. You always have the option of changing the channel.

I thought the same, then I realized this role is perfect for her.

Excellent. Hopefully this succeeds better than ‘Studio 60′.

      I actually kinda liked Studio 60 … :)

If it’s as good as that show, it will succeed on HBO where it couldn’t on NBC. HBO is the perfect home for a Sorkin show and I’m glad to see him finally doing it. Studio 60 had, in its only season, one of the best single seasons of any show I’ve watched.

aaron is brilliant! glad he’s back on TV

Larry calm down. Her part is the least recurring.

This sounds awesome. Sam Waterston as boss; love it. Olivia Munn may finally get a vehicle that will work for her. Can’t wait!

See, this is what he should have done instead of “Studio 60.” Acting like a sketch comedy show was the centerpiece of American culture was a bit much but with the news, he can really do important themes and not sound as heavy-handed. If he can tone down the lectures and his usual “If you’re not a liberal, you’re an idiot” mentality, this can be a winner.

We saw with the screenplay for “The Social Network” that Sorkin seems to have learned from his mistakes. Very excited for this…too bad I don’t have HBO :(

      • hmm

        Luckily, you can buy HBO.

Really hoping I can look past Olivia Munn’s terrible acting, but this show sounds great. And, aside from Munn, that’s a fantastic cast. Yay Sam Waterston!

As an aspiring writer, this guy is one of my heroes.

You picked a good role model: “Sports Night,” “The West Wing,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “The American President” – I could watch those again and again.

    another reason to live

  • Michael

I’ve been rewatching The West Wing, which hasn’t missed a beat. Aaron Sorkin is a living genius. I can’t wait to see this new show. Looks like I’m getting HBO!

I just watched “Sing your Song”. It is an extraordinary film. Continue showing films loke this.
