Beauty and the Beast could be returning to TV. ABC is developing a new version of the classic fairy tale romance from Human Target and Jericho writer-producer Jonathan E. Steinberg. The one-hour fantasy drama is described as an “epic re-imagining” of the tale.
Beauty and the Beast joins a host of name-brand projects in the running for broadcast’s next pilot season, including a Frankenstein, Romancing the Stone and Munsters project at NBC and a Bewitched remake at CBS. Of course, Beast would follow not one but two fairy tale inspired dramas hitting the air this fall — NBC’s Grimm and ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Hmm, if only ABC could get the 1980s CBS version’s original staff writer George R.R. Martin back … (but then he’d probably kill off the Beast at the end of the first season).

Why? WHY? Can’t anyone come up with an original idea?
It really bothers me when people say this. There are millions of writers across North America writing unique and interesting pilots, it’s not their fault that networks would rather bank on proven brands than take a chance on something new.
Unique? No. Interesting. Depends.
I’ll only watch it if the Beast is Ron Perlman reprising his role as Vincent.
Lydia you are so right! To bad they killed off linda halmaton as beauty
Swell. They’ve remade most of the old films and TV shows and comic books so now we’re going to be bombarded by films and TV shows taken from fairy tales. Next up non-musical operas, Chaucer and back to westerns.
Chaucer… YES! Now that would be an interesting show… dude get to the drawing board and head to HBO. I would totally watch that. In a heartbeat.
Sigh.
Gaston gonna be in it? OH DAMN! He’s the hottest Disney Villain. He is pig though. Belle is so lucky, Prince Adam and Gaston…Yummy.
I was/am a diehard fan of the CBS Beauty and the Beast (at least for the first season, they wrecked it in the second). Would love to see them try it again (Ron Perlman can still wear the makeup!).
Me too! Although the Beast scared me because I was very young.
Beauty and the Beast was a TV show? Never knew that.
@Chris, if you’re thinking of the animated movie…the live action Beauty and the Beast tv series was nothing like it at all.
Didn’t they basically kill Catherine (Linda Hamilton) after the 2nd season? Or was she presumed dead? Or she got amnesia and stopped loving Vincent? (I should check on Wikipedia) But before they brought the other woman on (Jo? And no, not Facts of Life Jo, some character named Jo), I loved, loved, loved that show…and it came on before Dallas!
@Dinjab – Linda Hamilton left the show after the second season because she wanted to have a baby and to save her marriage. She divorced not long after her child was born. Because the love story was so good they could not say that Vincent would just fall for someone else so they killed her character off (Catherine) after she gave birth to their son. He spent the rest of the 3rd season looking for his son and the man who killed Catherine. Jo was a detective helping him.
I don’t think this can really be used as a linchpin of the “Hollywood’s run out of ideas” argument as the French fairy tale has been filmed repeatedly over the last century.
Tale as old as time……
Get your peanuts now!!!
What would be the target audience, ABC? —–
We need new topics, new ideas, new concepts in TV programming… not the same ole chit.
Cool! I loved the old Beauty and the Beast show. A new show could be really good. Make it like Moonlight…
I would watch it if the cast was good and didn’t mess too much with the classic storyline.
It would be great to have Beauty & the Beast remake. A cult classic! I hope it doesn’t go to the wrong hands. They don’t make shows like that anymore. I hope Ron Koslow is involved.
