CW eyes 'Sex and the City' prequel

As anticipated, the CW is serious about getting into the Carrie Bradshaw business.

The fifth network is about to close a deal for a script based on The Carrie Diaries, Candice Bushnell’s book about Carrie Bradshaw’s high school years. Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will shepherd the new version should it go to pilot and (if Carrie fans are lucky) to series next fall. Former Sex and the City scribe/co-producer Amy B. Harris will also join in on the fun.

The Carrie Diaries starts with Carrie’s senior year in high school in the 1980s and continues to her first internship in New York City. Samantha Jones is in the story, but the other SATC characters are not.

The project fares from HBO and its sister studio, Warner Bros. TV.

Not everyone is keen on a prequel. At last month’s Television Critics Tour, the longtime Sex and the City show runner Michael Patrick King all but pooh-poohed the idea. “My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33, and I took her to 43. I didn’t even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw’s parents were because I thought she only existed in Manhattan,” he reportedly said. “The idea of going backwards and making her less evolved … is something that I don’t imagine doing.”

Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage in charge?
That sound you can hear is Micheal Patrick King & Darren Star screaming.

Sounds like it will be exactly like the failed Gossip Girl spinoff, Valley Girl.

      No thanks.

      • Summer

Exactly. Gossip Girl with out of date fashions.

    • Ash

Michael Patrick King always act that he created the show? Darren Starr did!!!!! Just like he created 90210.

  • Keaton

Being a total SATC lover, I will undoubtably watch this should it air, but I actually kinda agree with Michael Patrick King. I’m already in love with the Carrie I know and love from the show and two movies (well, first movie.) I think they need to go ahead and do a third and final film in the vein of the series and first film.

    • Carrie

I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. I just thought you all might like a pun. Here’s another one: I was going to look for my missing watch, but I could never find the time *chuckle*

    LOL! fellow dee, lol.

So how come they’ll do a prequel to this but not Gossip Girl? Maybe Josh and Stephanie can find a way to put young Lily in this.

I doubt there is any way for me to hate Carrie more. I loved Samantha and Charlotte, and Miranda most of all, but could never stomach Carrie. It would be way cooler if we could see Miranda and Charlotte. I’m sure it will undoubtedly suck, but I’ll still check it out.

I agree. Liked Carrie at first, but she’s got to be the most selfish character ever on tv. The supporting cast is what made SATC what it was.

  • Captain

So The Carrie Diaries would basically be Sex and the City without the fabulous fashion, wit and characters. Why are they doing this again?

  • Jose

Please no more shows like this on The CW, I actually prefer their action oriented shows like Nikita, Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural. I’d rather see more shows like that, instead of more teen girls who I’ll probably hate if I knew them in real life. Or shows like Aliens in america, really miss that show.

    • tvgirl48

I totally agree with you. I feel like they do the dark drama/action better than the spoiled rich kid shows.

    • lexi

ITA Jose, They need more action packed shows and real dramas like back when CW was called the WB!

  • Reba

So the movie they were also considering about a young Carrie is a no-go then? Why are they making this into a different series? Nobody cares about Carrie the 20 something girl, when they can have the real 30/40 something Carrie Bradshaw.

  • tvgirl48

I have to agree that this sounds like a step backwards. Why would I want to see Carrie without the group? Or, for that matter, without the sex of Sex and the City? It would just be a watered down imitation of the show.

  • Alisha

I want to point out a mistake in the article, The first book of the series “The Carrie Diaries” feature Samantha, right at the very end of the novel. The second novel in the series heavily feature both Samantha and Miranda, and there is a very brief glimpse of Charlotte near the end

    • WTF?

Yet, in the second SATC movie, Carrie states that she met Charlotte first, then Miranda, and finally Samantha. At least, that’s how it’s presented onscreen. Ah well, I used to live for the show, but now I hate what has happened to Carrie. She Should have stayed with Aiden, then maybe she wouldn’t have become quite so shallow and self-important.

      • Luka

Didn’t we already have young veosirn of Dumb & Dumber? They’ve shot this Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd and everyone were like: And? First one was funny because of Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels. Why the hell would we watch some unknown people who mimic them? Same here. How on earth someone could think that fans of the show will go and watch some unknown or some knows C-lists like Blake Lively, Selena Gomes, Leighton Meister or some other to play young characters from Sex and the city.

  • Amy

Oh lord. Please don’t. I’m so sick of Carrie Bradshaw. She’s such a terrible person. Sex and The City 2 was the final straw. F*** this character.

  • v

This sounds like the Gossip Girl prequel, but didn’t make it to air because they were worried about an 80′s period piece.

  • Q

Carrie Bradshaw is a c***, rhymes with runt.

  • kitcat

is anyone else totally sick of show. the puns in the show are annoying and catty. i wish people would just let the show go and stop with the movies and stop trying to redo it. just let the people who like this junk buy the dvds or watch it on cable. it is really bad how this makes it look like women 40 and over is just care about men and clothes and have no lives.

    • PDawg

Wait kitcat……women don’t just care about men and clothes??? hmmm. LOL

  • Alex

Coming to the CW ‘Skank Teen.’

    • n

      That’s already at the CW.
