Charlie Sheen to Matt Lauer: 'I'm a lot calmer'

In an interview with Today’s Matt Lauer that will air on Friday, Charlie Sheen acknowledges “there are portions” of his past “I would have amended a little bit” and insists he’s completely sober and “calmer” these days. When asked by Lauer when was the last time he had a drink or “something more,” Sheen responded, ” I don’t really keep track of the time. It’s been awhile, because I feel like, without getting into my feelings about AA and all that stuff, if you’re walking around hanging on to your time, it’s only a matter of time before it goes, you know?”

Countered Lauer, “But you’re an actor in a business, and you know that producers out there and people who get involved in projects with you want to know, has it been two weeks, has it been two months, are you bankable, are you trustworthy.”

“Yeah of course, yeah, one hundred percent, yeah,” Sheen replied. “I guess I would just have to lead by example. Words are only worth so much. It’s the actions and the behavior that matter.”

Sheen seemed to acknowledge that his behavior after his firing from Men got out of control, but he fell short of saying he regretted that volatile period. “It was like being shot out of a cannon into another cannon and then being just shot out of that one. It was like from one moment to the next I didn’t know what was going to happen. It was pretty exciting ….  I don’t believe in fear and defeat is not an option and I had to live by those mottos. Regardless of how I felt. But yeah, looking back on it, I don’t think I would trade it, but there are portions of it I would have amended a little bit.”

The actor — who was the subject of a Comedy Central roast last weekend and is currently developing a comedy called Anger Management – said his emotional state now is “a lot calmer. It’s a lot mellower … I’m seeing my kids a lot more, mending fences with Denise and Brooke, just trying to move forward and prioritize what matters. You know, just really get back in touch with some more reality and some more. It’s what I call the moments inside the moments. I think that’s where the life is, you know, it’s in those quiet moments. It’s not the giant TV deal or the big party or the award or  whatever, it’s the memory of your child’s smile at the end of the day that sort of brings that one lonesome tear, you know that tear, right Matt?”

    • You think?

“I don’t really keep track of the time.” RIIIIIGHT. In other words, he’s not completely sober or anywhere even close. Someone who has broken a cycle of addiction tends to be 1) proud of it, 2) humbled by it, and 3) has a need to be reminded of it. Charlie Sheen is in a tailspin of his own design and choosing, and he’ll remain there as long as he likes.

Go Charlie. I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use BidsFresh

      • Daren

If you guys had that kind of money, you wouldn’t know what day it is anymore either.

      • Josh

I’m a big d-bag trying to hock my wares on EW’s message board. Hey Mods, do your job please.

      • Rob

actually, people with problems are the ones that sit there counting the days…..they remember the precise date they last consumed their drug of choice because it is something significant to them. Those that start putting things in the past tend to not worry about “exactly” how long it has been. The fact that it is in the past is enough for them…

      • Spartacus

Actually, nothing could be further from the truth and that is AA Rehetoric and B.S.

People quit without any program all the time

I also think you 100% completely have no understanding what so ever of the nature of addiction.

        almost every single person attending AA{and it’s the same in NA,CA, and every other damn A}

is on a dry drunk…and the reason is COUNTING DAYS ARE THE ACTIONS OF SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT MADE A COMMITMENT TO QUIT…they’ve made a commitment to count days.
Lost of people get clean in programs, but more than lots do NOT…and 95% of the reason for that is that they were told to COUNT DAYS.

      • Agree

I completely agree w/ you “You Think”. Rob and Spartacus sound like they are in denial.

      • djwazu

Time for for you 9 to 5ers, not foe Charlie st2pid!

      • lynn

I think we need to quit worrying about Charlie Sheen and let him work things out for himself without everybody’s opinion. Don’t you people have lives?

      • RB2

Not everyone has the need to brag about how sober they are. In fact some people have the propensity to change because they need to change, rather than be reminded daily of their shortcomings.

You’re actually being a bitter, cynical, vitriolic person who clearly has a distaste for Charlie Sheen. Get over it, let him live his life. Either he’ll bounce back or ruin it, either way if he’s enjoying his life, good on him.

      • jimmymax

That tells me he’s saying to himself in the morning he won’t have a drink today, but in the evening out comes the bottle. That’s the kind of time Charlie’s talking about.

      • plunder

Sparticus is right. I have quit narcotics for years now, only went to meetings for a little while, I dont need to count days, and I am proud of it, but I’m not **stuck** in it, although some people may need that support. I buy Sheens version, although I would say this close to the event (of quitting dope) he could say something like “back in June” or something, but whatever. he doesnt need a time and date stamp like I’ve heard some people do….

  • amy

I think Charlie’s talking with a lot more sense now. I’m actually impressed! It’s a shame he didn’t straighten his @ss up before CBS fired him! D@mn shame!!!

    • Jillian

He’s an actor!! He’s saying what he knows people want to hear!!

      • Cathy

Yeah, I get the feeling he’s still talking in circles. True, he’s not acting like a raving lunatic, but I don’t get a vibe of total honesty from him. I think it’s going to take some time before he earns back any trust.

    • Rob

he was a bright spot in a pretty stupid show….Men will now fail as it should and Sheen will likely find success elsewhere…

  • John

Hey gotta ‘act’ clean in order to get another acting gig

    • Daren

He should go into producing and directing. I think he would make some great films.

      • Mino

Yeah, like he made great live, comedy shows that people booed and walked away from. He’s an actor. He’s only as good as the lines that have been written for him. He lucked out with Lorre and then he threw it away. Gotta be sober or a genius to produce or direct–he’s neither.

  • RaRa

“I don’t really keep track of the time” is code for “more recently than I choose to admit.”

    • jodipo

ding ding ding… give RaRa a cookie!

  • Clete

I don’t believe that any Major television channel will ever take a chance on him again. He seems to be making no great effort to change his behavior and it is sad. He isn’t the greatest actor in the world, but he seemed to have some talent, but he cannot seem to keep his addictions or temper under control for any extended period.

  • CSV

he is back on his meds

    • Daren

      He won.

  • Jillian

He looks like what my cat pukes up after he kills a bird!!!

    • Johnny Depp is Hot!

He could get a decent haircut, a facial, maybe some sleep? He looks tired!

  • Simon

    I don’t keep track of time? Riiiiiiight….

  • Javadude54

I don’t believe that Charlie can stay away from cocaine and don’t expect this “calm” period to last for very long. If he can stay off the crack, good for him and better for his family. I just don’t believe he has the strength of character to do it. I hope he proves me wrong.

Hey Alice. This looks kinda like an ad instead of a comment. Nice job!

    • Tom

      Alice, See You Next Tuesday.

    • ronsapp

aliceshanley quit spamming with your stupid advertisements. Meant for comments not idiots.

    • Jon Goss

Hey alice post some statistics and share with us how many feeble minded folks you actually get with this kind of spam.

    • jimmymax

..and guess what, this is most likely some greasy dude NOT named Alice, come on, don’t be surprised. “Alice Shanley” has a fake sound to it, just like all the other spam.

  • aliceshanley

    Go Charlie

    • Daren

Go Charlie! And Chuck can suck it.

      • Mary

        I agree

  • GMcIntyre

Thank God he’s calmer…..he was crazy. His family has got to be wondering why he thought using drugs and acting like a fool would more important than him being a good role model and person for his children. Any one that goes to that extreme where they loose their careers is NUTS.

  • jane

    l o s e r.
thank u daddy for my career

  • Shannon

All I want to know from him, and I’m a Charlie Sheen fan, is what will happen from his lawsuits with CBS, Lorre, and whoever else was involved. Was it WB? That’s the last of the curiosity I have about this whole mess, will they wind up paying him lost wages.
Otherwise, he’s an addict, addicted to a lot of things and I don’t really see that getting better any time soon. That takes a long time to mend dude. Good luck to you Charlie.

    • Bill Duke

He should have to pay them for having to put up with him.

  • lana

This coming from the guy who bragged about telling his boss to go ‘f’ himself less than a week ago. He’s not sober there’s no way.

    • Rob

It’s been MONTHS since he’s even had a boss…so what boss are you referring to?
