'Up All Night' gets strong start; 'Survivor' premiere dips

Why, good morning! NBC’s new comedy Up All Night delivered a surprisingly strong premiere/preview rating Wednesday night.

The new comedy starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett was given a big lead-in by the two-hour finale of America’s Got Talent (14 million viewers, 3.5 adults 18-49 rating). While Up All Night (10.9 million, 3.7) at 10 p.m. dipped slightly from the final half hour of Got Talent, it still ranked as the night’s highest-rated show overall with an enviable number. Not as many viewers stuck around, however, for NBC’s second new comedy, Hank Azaria’s Free Agents (6.3 million, 2.1).

Meanwhile over on CBS…

The 23rd edition of Survivor (10.6 million, 3.4) continued the show’s downward trend; the 90-minute premiere dipped 15 percent compared to last year’s opener and marks its lowest-rated fall debut yet. Still, the reality hit ranked a strong third for the night and was up from last spring’s premiere. The finale of Big Brother (7.7 million, 2.9) was steady with last year’s closer.

On The CW, the network’s new reality effort H8R (1.3 million, 0.6) didn’t bring much Jersey Shore magic to the table despite having Snooki as its celebrity guest. The show got less than half the rating of America’s Next Top Model in the slot last year. Meanwhile, the 17th edition of America’s Next Top Model (1.9 million, 0.9), now at 9 p.m., shook things up with an all-star cast, yet still fell 18 percent from last fall.

And everybody criticized NBC for not putting Up All Night after The Office. I hope the ratings hold up next week.

Next week will be strong. A lot of us didn’t know it was on. Then the ratings will plummet. You heard it here.

I hope the ratings hold up too, but it’s ratings last night are not a very good assessment of how it will do later on. It was on after the America’s Got Talent finale, which definitely helped to boost its ratings. And it didn’t have much competition at all. Starting next week, it’s going to have to lead off the night at 8pm. And the other networks are about to roll out their premieres as well, so there will be some stiff competition, especially from The X Factor on Fox.

i didn’t like up all night. i did like free agent and feel their ratings would be much stronger if they had the lead into up all night. it’s a funny show. up all night was predictable.

well AGT is highr rated than The office and it had zero comeption. Lets see week 2 before you stop quesitoning that thinking

dont forget — XFACTOR starts next week and will blow all these others away.

SURVIVOR is getting boring. no need for 90minute premiere. i think this show has run its course. SAD!

Speak for yourself, I still love Survivor.

      I LOVE HOUSE HUNTERS!

Up All Night had me laugh out loud several times, maybe because I can relate to it having been married 8 years before baby came and being an “older” mom. Hope it does well!

Loved the show! I hope it stays on and becomes a success. My husband was laughing out loud…good series premiere.

“Up All Night” was hilarious! It’s been promoted enough all summer and it was definetely worth the wait.

  • Tee

I thought Up All Night was pretty mediocre and a waste of a funny cast.

    • Voodoo

Did you just call Will Arnett funny?

      • SMidnite

Some people find him amusing; I watched the show; but won’t next week. I could only stand 10 minutes of Free Agents.

      • tai

        ha!

    • Jenny

      My thoughts exactly!

  • bjad

Where were Jade and Melrose? 2 of my favorites!

  • sly

I found both Up All Night and Free Agents uninteresting … on to the next new shows.

  • kevin

    Up All Night-good. Free Agents-bad. H8R-very bad.

    • MG

I agree. Although I had watched the promo for Up All Night and the promo and pilot were pretty much one and the same. Still pretty funny though- hopefully it keeps it up. I watched 10 minutes of Free Agents and then turned it off. It was very uninteresting and not funny. Ringer was good on Tuesday, and The Secret Circle was pretty good too.

  • Chuck

I found Up All Night not one bit funny. Mya Rudolf character annoying. Wasnt even interested enough to try Free Agents

  • T2

See, CBS? We hated the idea of returning players last time, and now that you’ve chosen to ignore the fans – you can pay the price.

    • t3hdow

I agree with you, but in all fairness to the Survivor producers, they can’t react to criticism for any specific season until two seasons later. Don’t forget, while Redemption Island started airing to the fans, this season was being filmed. Now if next season the same thing happens, well, the producers don’t have this excuse next time.

  • Joenamherst

Great news! Noew they can take the unfunny, unwatched, pathetic 30rock off the air. Tina Fay’s 15 minutes of fame are just about over..

    • A

Go watch your lame CBS sitcoms, you pathetic troll.

  • Nadine

Up All Night was super entertaining, will continue to watch.

    • Kim P
