'Young and the Restless' scoop: Melody Thomas Scott talks about new contract

It never seemed possible and it turns out it wasn’t: Despite fears that Melody Thomas Scott — aka Nikki Newman — was leaving Young and the Restless for good, the actress has confirmed to EW that she signed a new deal to stay with the CBS sudser.

Like previous years, she was required to take a pay cut. (Hey, soap finances are not like they used to, something the actress freely acknowledges). But the upbeat Scott is only focusing on the positive: She secured a three-year deal to resume the beloved role of Victor’s on-and-off-again wife.

“I was thrilled to hear it was three years,” Scott told EW. “That means they are thinking very positively about the state of everything. That’s great they are.”

Back in June, Scott tweeted that she was off the CBS daytime drama in light of her contract expiring and hadn’t been on set since April 28. How did the show address her absense? Nikki was entering rehab for drinking. “I have recd no scripts since. Y&R has not contacted me,” she wrote.

This is the longest Scott has gone without a contract since 2002, when she missed seven weeks of taping while her reps tried to close a new deal. She’s played Nikki since 1979.

“I never did get an answer,” Scott recalls after leaving the set last spring. ” They probably were thinking, `well gee, let’s see how we can do without so and so without telling them.’ I assume it was a financial thing.”

Scott credits her fans for the Twitter and letter writing campaign that she believes led to her new contract. “If fans had not stepped up, I would not have a job today. I’m so grateful.”

Scott expects to return to the set sometime in October. Will she be back on the wagon? Not if Scott has anything to do with it! (She hasn’t received a script yet). “I love Nikki drinking!” Scott said. “I like it as an actor. It’s much more fun, and everybody seems to prefer a drunk Nikki.”

No worries, Melody. Nikki was staying put all along. You all know she killed Diane, right?

    • Flip

Actually, Patty killed Diane. Only Patty is crazy and vicious enough to strike her 10 times in the head when only one or two blows would’ve killed her.

      • Joe

If Diane’s killer goes to the same prison as Sharon, it’s no big deal. Sit in the visitor’s room all day, flipping through magazines as guests breeze in and out. I think they should add an adjoining Starbucks for the inmates and their visitors. And a day spa. And Deacon Sharp on duty as the resident inmate stud.

I completely forgot about Patty……you’re on to something!!!

  • joy

Good! Glad she is back,I love Nikki!

  • Kendis

Great! Now bring back Victoria Rowell (Drucilla Winters).

    • Cast Of Y & R

    • shy

    • carol

    • Julyrose

I agree! Bring back Dru’s (Victoria Rowell) character. Sophia’s character is boring! zzzz’s

  • Damian

Everyone takes a pay cut unless you’re Eric Braeden in which case you throw a hissy fit and hold your breath until you get your way…lol I kid, I kid!

    • LG

The Black Knight gets whatever he wants!

    • Flip

Agreed! The show is lame without Drucilla! Plus we need to shut up racists like LG.

      • Flip

I wasn’t making a joke. The anti-Victoria Rowell folks are racist douchebags.

      • Helen Hayes

Yes. Please bring back Drucilla and make it a mistake about the baby that Neil is suppossedly the father of. Bring Malcolm back for the baby’s mother.

      • Tamika

OMG… Ya’ll are so dumb!!! Racist Douchebags….. REALLY!?!?!?!?

    • judy sucy

wish Victor would get his “adoo” He needs to start paying for all his actions. Put him in prision, put him off the show, most I talk with just don’t care.

      • peggy morton

I just wish they would do something to victor he seems to be able to get away with dirty dead.

  • Flip

Whoops, that was supposed to go under Kendis’ post and “LG” should have been “Cast of Y & R”.

    • LG

Watch out Flip, or Mr. Moustache will buy this magazine from Time Warner, delete your comments, and ban you!

  • Dee Jones

I`m a longtime Y&R watcher and I`m happy she`s back. Lets get rid of Victor because he`s just ridiculous now. Nikki should return with a new man by her side and have everyone wonder who he is!

  • cheryl

I have watched Y & R for over 40yrs and Niki and Victor getting together again is tooooo much even for me. Surely there is a story line for Niki without her being a slobering drunk.

    • Dan

Wow! You’ve watched for over 40 years? That’s amazing…especially since the show just celebrated 38 years on the air this past March 26th. That clarified, I completely agree with you about Nikki and Victor NOT needing to be together again. Let’s hope they find a story for Nikki where she’s: a) not drunk, and b) not pining for/pursuing/sleeping with Victor again. Victor is a giant cartoon and Nikki is better off away from that.

      • carol

not true its been on longer then 38 yrs now thats amazing

  • Dinjab

Totally have to trash this ad that is popping up here. Why is NBC promoting The Office as if it’s main character is Dwight Schrute? I’d never watch it if that were the case. It’s an ensemble show. Why not show Dwight along with Pam and Jim?

And then there’s Whitney, which is ostensibly about Whitney. Why show her husband/boyfriend/whoever in the background?

What intern came up with this ad?

  • Joe

Glad MTS is coming back – now, get rid of Genie Francis! Her attempt at “acting” is unintentionally hilarious.

    • Kayte

I have watched Y&R when started 1973 tryed to never miss aday, but when I went to work I did. I agree with last last comment get rid or Genine Francises cant stand her acting, let somebody.

      • Ms. Max

I do agree, flush Gennie Francis. I watched her on gh yrs ago, but she’s no good here. The Winters line is NASTEE and not a black thing.

  • Jill

Bring back Sandra Nelson as Phyllis’ doppelganger!

  • Freda Grozdanic

This is the best news ever! Y&R is not the same without Nikki – i am so happy Melody signed a 3-yr contract!

  • janice

i love nikki idont want her off the show i think her and victor belong together also i wish they would bring back drew boy wouldnt that cause a mess i love the show ive been watching it since i was 15

  • Zoe

A 3 year contract means they have YOU for 3 years. You still only have them for 13 weeks. Rock on!

  • Gwen Randolph

Glad to see Nikki is coming back. Show would not be the same without her, Also, can someone please talk to Victoria Rowell about resuming her role as Dru. Neil has not had a stable relationship since she left…poor thing….and the guy that plays Malcom is horrible…too bad Shemar Moore is not available!

    • josephine

I agree the guy how plays Malcom is horrible..wash the old malcom could came back.

  • The_Moustache

Happy she’s back for 3 years! Now give her a story line worth that time. I hope it’s not another 3 years of Nikki walking around the Newman Ranch and reading the paper.

Nikki should start her own company similar to Victor’s and take-over Fenmore’s, Jabot, and take Restless Style from Phyllis!

It would be great to see her fighting with Lauen, Jill, Ashley and Phyllis.
