Official from Bravo: Four ladies make 'friendly departures' as 'Real Housewives of NYC' regulars

The reports last week that there will be major casting changes on the next season of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City are indeed true: In a statement, Bravo confirmed to EW that Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon, Alex McCord, and Cindy Barshop are not currently signed to be regulars on the upcoming season 5 of the hit reality series. The network, however, claims to “continue to have on-going discussions” with the four ousted housewives.

“Ramona Singer, Sonja Morgan, and LuAnn DeLesseps will be returning for season 5 of The Real Housewives of New York City,” a Bravo spokesperson told EW via email. “We’ve had a fabulous run with all the ladies and appreciate them sharing their lives with our viewers. It is a friendly departure among the other ladies and we continue to have on-going discussions with them.”

Zarin and McCord were original housewives in the first season of the series; Bensimon was added at the beginning of season 2; and Barshop officially became a housewife at the beginning of season 4, the last to air. Of those returning for season 5, Singer and DeLesseps are the only two members of the original cast remaining; Morgan joined partway through season 3.

This is not the first big defection for the series: Original cast member Bethenny Frankel completed three seasons of the show before leaving for her own show, Bethenny Ever After, which was a runaway ratings smash and was renewed for a third season back in March.

Hopefully they really are gone from the series and the ongoing discussions don’t lead to them returning. They could not get along, and the show was no longer entertaining. The drama between those women was so painful to watch. That kind of bickering and name-calling should not happen among adults, much less in front of the camera.

This news makes me so, so happy. It should have happened last year. I would like to see them introduce a new, younger generation of NYC housewives — some Carries and Samanthas who are actually in the center of the Manhattan action, not 50-something desperate women who file for bankruptcy and show scenes of them seducing their wrinkly husbands.

      • Tom

It would have been better just to scrub the entire season they have running now, and replace it with some kind of live broadcast with a new group of people.

      • Cocoa Brown

What’s wrong with 50 yr. old people??

      • Melissa

You realizie that “Carrie” is pushing 50 and “Samantha” is closer to 60 than 50, right?

      • @Melissa

Obviously I think she’s talking about the Carrie and Samanthas on the show SATC, which is why she didn’t say Sarah Jessica Parker or Kim Cattrall – they were in their 30s in its hay day, checking out new hotspots etc.

      • JillZarin

        I run………with a faaaabulous circle of people.

    • Haha

JillWeasel with the Kermit Frog face and the heart of the Wicked Witch finally gets what she deserves………obscurity!

      • candacetx

Meanwhile… the Bethenney money-train keeps on rollin. Haha serves Jill right. But I wish they’d just cleaned house – I dislike Ram-onja and Countless

      Good riddance Jilly! Hahahahahahahah

    • lisa g.

While Jill has become increasingly annoying, wrong move to dump her! She has a polarized personality which suits reality tv.

      • Amber~

Should have kept Jill & DUMPED RAMONA!! :) Just sayin

      • @Melissa

No. The best reality TV (that has a chance for longevity) features likable characters.

    • Annie

I agree. I stopped watching RHONY after the “scary island” episode and since Bethenny left. I could not stand Jill and Kelly. The RH franchise has lost its luster and I stopped watching any of the RH shows especially with the suicide of Russell on BH. Tragic and creepy vibe.

      • Jill Zarin

I didn’t say that! Do you have a tape of me saying it? If u can’t produce a tape right here n now, it never happened! ………

    • lisa g.

Nene better be careful! If they fired Jill, surely they would fire her!

  • ChrisS.

Thank God Jill Zarin is gone…no one will miss her.

    • Sandasavi

      I agree!

      • kavita

        hmmm… I liked her.

  • Christian

Why are they always trying to tinker with the RHoNYC? They should really shake up the OC housewives! That show has been unbearable for a couple seasons!

  • Bravolebrity

THey should keep Jill…Kelly and the rest didn’t add much but I always felt Jill was the core. It just shows you how fake those shows are…cuz now all of the sudden Luann, Sonya and Ramona are going to be going to dinner parties and vacations with 3 other mysterious ladies. Im all for new blood but they should keep Jill and get rid of Sonya

    • Shelly

Hi Jill! I don’t agree and am glad you’re gone.

      • FrenemyWatcher

        Amen. Preach it Shelly!

    • Miles

LOL Love it. Jill would totes do this…

    • amber

dueces jill. you won’t be missed

    • seth Israel

I agree… Jill was for real… she had real access and real new york attitude. The others had nothing to offer… I think it was a hughe mistake to take Jill out… o well I needed an excuse to stop watching this series anyway… I think I just found one.

    • Gwynneth

Hehe- I was wondering how long it would take for jillweasel to start in. What a fool!

  • nan

Please. Keep Jill. Please. Keep Kelly (I’ll come up with some kind of reason) please keep Cindy. She at least send to lead somewhat of a “normal” life.

And PLEASE let us know why Bravo network would keep Ramona. I’d handle her if the above named Housewives are also signed. Sonja needs to go. Alex (and her butt-wipe phony baloney husband) needs to go. When the casting dust settles, and if Bravo sticks to its plan, I think it would be a sure bet that Bravo will lose a large part of its audience. RECAP: BYE BYE ALEX (SIMON), BYE SONJA. GLAD YOU’RE BACK: JILL, CINDY, KELLY.DEFINITELY THOUGH, PLEASE SENT THOSE TRASHY, PHONY, LACKING IN TASTE AND GRACE: Goodbye, BYE Alex and Simon, and Francois and Johann. May the winds and flying monkeys send all of you back to the Land of Oz

Waiting anxiously on final casting decisions.

    • KHS

Delusional. That could only mean one thing: this must be Kelly Bensimon.

      • teresa

        so true

    • Gwynneth

Sound like jillweasel fell off the wagon.

  • bill

What difference does it make. They are interchangable. Just a bunch of loud, spoiled, idiotic, whiny, priveliged, stupid bitches. The downfall of American television continues. I feel sad for people who think this garbage is “entertainment.” Pathetic.

  • KHS

My favorite sentence: Original cast member Bethenny Frankel completed three seasons of the show before leaving for her own show, Bethenny Ever After, which was a runaway ratings smash and was renewed for a third season back in March.

I loved New York the first 2 seasons, so I feel it could regain some of it’s magic with new faces. We’ll see. I just didn’t see the point without Bethenny this past year. See ya Jill and kelly- you won’t be missed.

    • Haha

Kelly will call her firing “systematic bullying”, before finally being dragged off to the nuthouse screaming “Al Sharpton!!!”

      • The Other Anne

        Satchels of Gold!

      • kat

Except up there in Kellyland, I am pretty sure she was not fired and was actually promoted (with a basket of jellybeans!) to the boss of everyone on the show and in New York. She is currently running in traffic to celebrate.

      • Mikaylin

@kat 0 LOL, best reply ever.

      • Kim P

Right on kat, you nailed it!!!! :)

      • Daria

  • Miles

Great job, Bravo!!! May I now recommend the following casting cuts from other franchises:
Nene from Atlanta, Taylor from Beverly Hills, all the ladies from Miami (since I heard it was picked up for Season 2), and Teresa from New Jersey… All these my humble opinions, agree to disagree…

    • Nancy

I agree, but I’m on the fence with Teresa.

      • Nilofar

Can I just say what a reduction to scraeh out somebody who actually knows what theyre speaking about on the internet. You undoubtedly know the best way to carry an issue to light and make it important. More folks have to learn this and perceive this aspect of the story. I cant believe youre not more common because you positively have the gift.

    • Jackie

Totally agree about Nene — Kim, Kandi and Phaedra would be given the chance to shine (they’re my faves). Humor and genuine situations always win out over huge, fake Nene and her loud mouth.
Taylor also has to go. She’s a wreck. As for OC, I’d love to see Alexis and Gretchen get the boot, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.. Gretchen and her five pound makeup-ed face is truly frightening.
I’d say keep Teresa from Jersey though, she holds the whole family dynamic together.

      • Katie

Nene’s the worst. I think she’s just not getting fired because Andy’s scared of her..

      • Miles

Sadly, I completely forgot to mention OC… as in maybe, they should all go LOL

      • Savannah

My children and some of my neiecs and nephews attend the same small school where I teach. The other day my four-year-old asked me why her cousins had not yet arrived at school. I explained that they had a dentist appointment to go to and would be at school later. I went on to tell her that she and her sisters would soon be having dentist appointments as well. Armed with that information, she went running off to find her sisters. I over heard her saying, “The Petroviches (cousins) aren’t here because they have a disappointment this morning and we’re going to have a disappointment soon too!

  • tom

Jill was the best housewife of them all…I won’t be back to watch.

    • SaraS

LOL.. why? Was it when she squeezed herself into size 2 dresses and spanx with fancy lace and started a business with it? Was it when she sucked up to whoever was in “power” and then dismissed anyone who wasn’t? Was it when she showed up as Madonna circa 1980 at WWHL in a high ponytail?

Jill Zarin is the most polarizing person on TV. I do not know one person who likes her, and many who don’t watch the show because she’s horrific in so many ways.

      • Sammy

Hahaha. I literally just choked from laughter. So true about the spanx and I definitely remember that watch what happens live with her crazy ponytail and face lift. Remember when she was promoting that book about friendship right after what she did to Bethenny? Psycho.

      • Donna

People can like whomever they want. I prefer Jill to Ramona. Ramona is annoying and weird but I’d still keep her. I for one will miss Jill and Kelly and probably won’t watch anymore.

    • Gwynneth

jillweasel- you are the only person who would ever write something like this, the tom’s of the world are just as appalled w/ your spending $35,000 on a bag (anything other than college tuition) & your inane commenary about big pp’s & little pp’s (which you seem to think determines a man’s worth). You are universally offensive, so don’t bother selling this line of crap. Y ou may as well write “not jill” as your name.

    • Jody

While some are happy about the departures, I am not among them. Jill has always been my favorite NY housewife and I actually started liking Kelly some last year. Would have much preferred Ramona’s pinot grigio exit so I won’t be viewing next season.

    • Dani

Jill makes me want to upchuck.

  • DC Roz

I think Alex was axed because of Simon, although the two them were getting weirder by the moment. Cindy barely registered as a “character,” Kelly is, well, Kelly which isn’t good and Jill? She will have more time to devote to her shapewear line.

  • Debbie V.

Kelly should have been long gone after the Scary Island incident!!! I was surprised that she was ever asked back for a second season.

  • Chuck

Who cares? Cancel the entire Housewives franchise.

    • John

Chuck, finally a sane comment on here! Lol.

  • JoshP

They get rid of the attention getters and keep boring Luanne. Really Bravo when was the last time you gave her screen time? Never, as in ever she’s that dull and rude.

  • MJ

Good riddance to all of them – good move by Bravo. It looks like they kept the money-makers and axed the dead weight.

I used to like Jill but she changed and got meaner with each passing season to the point where I’d DVR the show and fast forward through her scenes, same with Kelly. Those two got their comeuppance when Bethenny’s popularity (and self-earned wealth) went through the roof. Alex was tolerable until Simon came around and I’ll bet he’s the reason she was let go.

  • BH

What? They are keeping Luanne? Noooooooo

    • Jenny

You mean “The Countess”? I agree, she should go. I would rather see them keep Alex another season. She and her husband were weird, but compelling. Luanne is quite mean, and her life is now filled with nothing interesting. And her God-awful singing……….

      • Miller

        This. Exactly.

    • Cari

      I agree…the Countless is annoying!
