Alec Baldwin explains why he skipped Emmys

Why didn’t Alec Baldwin show up at the 62nd Emmys last night? Though it was previously reported the actor skipped after Fox cut a Rupert Murdoch joke he filmed for the telecast, Baldwin said he simply chose to attend a birthday party instead. In New York for Tony Bennett’s 85th birthday gala, the actor told reporters of the Murdoch report, “I didn’t skip the Emmys because of that … I skipped the Emmys because of this — because I wanted to be here.”

Baldwin served as host of the Bennett gala — a role he said he signed up for long before the Emmys show was scheduled — and told reporters he would catch the Emmys “on YouTube tomorrow.” On Sunday, reports claimed Baldwin was angry that Fox had decided to remove a bit poking fun at the News of the World phone hacking scandal in Britain. (Fox told EW that the joke was cut because the network feared it would be in poor taste to make light of serious allegations surrounding the scandal.) Baldwin addressed the situation later, tweeting, “Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little.”

    • @Amy

      U must u read it!

      • MadToGet

I often have to actually read something that is presented to me before I can decide if it has merit or is a waste of my time. Those who value and employ the educations they’ve received would agree with me.

I agree. Do it, don’t do it. Who cares? The world doesn’t revolve around Alec Baldwin.

      Yum. I love Alec :)

      Alec Baldwin:

Thank you for having the *alls …
most of Hollywood does not have.

      It does not go un-noticed.

      Mere working-class mortal.

  • Kim

Thanks. Last night I was about to kill myself because Alec Baldwin skipped the Emmys.

    • We Hate Kim

      What stopped you?

      • Raymond J.

Typical vile hater with a cliche response.

      • Kim

Why would you hate me for no other reason other than my undying commitment to Alec? You must hate Alec, too. Or are you paranoid that I’m not being sincere? We hate the paranoids.

      • We Hate Kim

        Suicide is not funny.

      • We Hate Raymond

I hope you get the flu

What is a clown commits suicide? That is humorous

      • AlecBaldwinHateHisDaughter

        Ha ha ha!

    • Kevin

I’m sure he came out with this press release because he looked like a fool for not coming over something so petty. It’s not working Alec, you still look like a childish jerk.

  • Cecile dePoulignac

    So, what was the joke????

    • We Hate Raymond

      The joke was:
What is gayer than someone named Cecile?

    • Matt Corey

LOVED Cecile!!!! Nancy Frangione was the best!!!!

  • Annette

Alec does a fantastic Tony Bennett on SNL – his story checks out.

  • Annette

Didn’t realize he wasn’t there til his emmy category came up and then still didn’t care that he was MIA! EW – get over your Alec Baldwin fixation.

  • Sally

Not crazy about his views on things, but so what where he goes- its his life…besides, if it were me , I’d choose TB 86th too!

  • Sally

    opps 85th!

  • dbm

Left to get a hamburger and crawl around on the floor.

    • Kim Basinger

Wasn’t that the Hoff? (Knight Rider himself).

Think Baldwin left to call his daughter. She wasn’t home, so he had to leave a message on the machine……

      • anonymous

No wonder Alec ditched you Kim.

      • Um

        Kim B is correct

      • We Hate Raymond

        Kim B is a steetwalker

      • I hate We Hate Raymond

You can’t even make your insults correctly. Nice spelling.

  • John

I was hoping that he had finally lived up to his promise and left the country after George Bush was re-elected.

    • @John

He never promised that. That’s just another lie perpetuated by the Faux News crowd.

      • Elaine Connelly

        @ John:
No he said it for sure, it was even in the newspapers. Something that you probably don’t read. ALEC BALDWIN IS ONE EGO CENTRIC POS.

      • @Elaine

I totally agree Baldwin has a huge ego. No argument there. But he NEVER said he would leave the country if Bush won. It is a myth that the right has been spreading about him (and others two, such as Martin Sheen, Tim Robbins, and Barbara Striesand) for years.

      • LookAtMe

Huge ego and a huge, doughy body.

      • We Hate Raymond

@LookAtMe Huge ego? says the guy names lookatme. Mr Baldwin cannot help the fact that he comes from noble stock and is a thespian the likes of which we have not seen since Laurence Olivier.

    • Simpli

It was Rush Limbaugh that said he would move to Canada if Obama was elected. Still waiting for that happy moment. Maybe Canada didn’t want him either.

      • Jorge

I’m sure the Canucks threatened to tie him face-down to a log raft and set him adrift on Lake Superior so the gulls could have their way with him if he tried, so he thought better of it.

Was’nt he supposed to move out of the country after Bush was elected years ago? Still waiting Alec, time to follow through on your word

    • @DARDENE

Baldwin never said he would leave the country if Bush was elected. That’s just another lie spread by the Faux News crowd. Don’t believe everything you hear.

      • A

After the 2004 election Bill O’Reily kept asking Alec Baldwin over and over to come on his show and explain why he had not left the US like he “promised” he would if Bush won. Baldwin told O’Riely that he would come on the show IF O’Reily could find ANY evidence that he had ever said such a thing. Suddenly O’Riely quit asking.

  • LOL

    The GOP fears the Emmys.

  • Carol

Hosting Tony Bennetts Birthday Gala? If it had been televised I would have watched that.

  • Mary

Kudos to you Alex for your convictions. You made promises to be in attendance for Tony Bennett and you made good on that.

    • android

      Who’s Alex?

  • RaRa

Sorry, Alec, not buying it. The fact that they had to reassign the “Mr. President of Television” role to Leonard Nimoy AFTER they cut your joke says to me that originally you had planned to participate in the Emmy’s rather than go to the birthday party. Just man up and tell the truth, Alec.

    • PepR

Yeah I’m sure he flew all across the country and asked Bennett if he could host the gala in a couple of hours.

  • Laurie

I think it’s awful that Fox could and would censor a joke (or anything else) because it deals with their boss. I don’t buy for a minute that they censored it because it was too serious of a subject. I think they did it because the terrible violations dealt with their owners. I don’t think they reported much on it in their news either, other than to say, it wasn’t that bad or their boss didn’t do it. (This is what’s scary about certain media – they decide what they want you to know in their news. They don’t just report on it, they comment on it and spin it.) But to cut a joke – aw, come on!

    • android

Do you think it’s anything any other network wouldn’t do?

      • AltDave

Well, if you’ve ever watched 30 ROCK you’d know that they constantly make fun of NBC management and even their buyout by Comcast. So the answer is, not every network would have censored it.

      • SirLizard

AltDave is correct. No network allows as much abuse at its expense as NBC, which is to their credit. Although, they’ve certainly earned every joke that is made by late-night talk show hosts, characters on “30 Rock,” and people on “Saturday Night Live.”
