'Drop Dead Diva' season-finale preview: 'This episode is three years in the making'

If you’ve seen the promo for Sunday’s season 3 finale of Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva (9 p.m. ET), you know Stacy utters the words “I’m not Deb… Jane is” to Grayson. It’s a moment creator Josh Berman knows fans have been waiting for. “This episode is three years in the making, and after this episode, nothing will ever be the same,” he tells EW. “My hope is that at the end of season 3, fans will feel exhilarated and desperate for more. I also want them to feel rewarded. I love television, and as a fan of TV, I remember growing up with series where nothing would evolve, and I felt like they would just be airing the same episode over and over. I wanted our show to take a giant step forward to really reward all the serious viewers. Like life, it’s not the same storyline over and over. For the show to grow, and to reward our viewers, something big needed to happen.”

The hour brings every character a mini-cliffhanger, Berman says. From the promo, we know Owen wants Jane to go away with him. Parker, who thought he was getting back together with Kim, finally finds out he has a son with Elisa (Brandy Norwood). And as for Stacy, who ended last episode in jail after assaulting her costar/boyfriend, Berman has this to say: “Now that she’s become the ultimate diva and hit rock bottom, it’s the time to see if she’s learned from the mistakes she’s made. And what she’s certainly learned is that she actually does have real genuine feelings for Fred. But the question is, can Fred forgive her? The relationship absolutely comes to a head.”

As for the actual cases in the finale, there are two: Stacy turns to Grayson, who strikes her a deal that — oops! – can’t go through because she has a prior conviction, an offense that involves Deidre Hall, who cameos as herself. “We’ve been emailing back and forth figuring a way to bring her back in season 4. She had such a good time,” Berman says.

Jane and Kim take the case of a death-row inmate (Johnathon Schaech) who wants to donate his heart to his dying sister (Jamie-Lynn Sigler). Berman had worked with Sigler on a pilot and fell in love with her. “She can do both comedy and drama so, so well and that’s what we need for Drop Dead Diva — actresses that can make you cry one moment but also keep it light in the next. So when I was thinking of trying to cast a woman who could be dying, but you don’t want it to be weepfest, I thought Ohmygod, Jamie would be amazing. I called her up directly and offered her the part on the phone,” he says.

Schaech’s casting was equally easy. “I’ve wanted to work with him forever. I’ve brought him in for other parts, and this part I thought would be perfect for him. Just like with Jamie, I called him up directly and offered him the part. It’s a nice situation where neither of them needed to audition for the role because I was such a big fan.”

Clearly, the finale was written in anticipation of a fourth season, which UPDATE! the network has just announced“I have arced out the show in my head through season 5, which is two more seasons, and I really hope that Lifetime allows us to get there,” Berman says.

He recommends fans watch Sunday’s season finale live instead of DVRing it so they don’t get spoiled. “This episode is something you want to be a part of the first time through,” he says. But of course, live ratings are also a nice reminder to Lifetime of fans’ investment in the show.

I was so excited when I saw the promo! I know Jane has been seeing different sides of Grayson, and that she’s into the new judge, but I really want to see Jane/Deb with Grayson. Or at least have him know the truth.

im going to have to see what the context was for stacy to tell grayson that jane is deb. jane did that and grayson flipped, ran out, and was almost killed by a car. stacy better have a good reason for betraying her fan cuz it’s not her’s to tell. that alone makes me want fred to not forgive her. and i don’t like brandy as parker’s ex or this story line. they have no chemistry.

    • Dana

Do you think they have no chemistry because she’s black or because she’s brandy?

      • laraina

        yeah tats a good question

WHY does everyone always have to go there? The race card always has to get thrown down on the table. Maybe it’s just because her character is a cold, uppity snob that kept a child from knowing his father! I mean, forget parental rights. That child has rights. Unless a person is abusive, neither parent has the right to keep the child from knowing the other parent. Also, the character has all the appeal of a dead fish that’s been laying in the sun for a month.

I just LOVE this show. Keep it going.

The longer this show goes on… the less and less I like Jane with Grayson. Especially with Judge Owen. Deb before needed a strong-ish alpha. Jane doesn’t need someone to alpha it up. She needs someone to spark with.

  • Rachel

I am not at Grayson fan. I never knew Deb and don’t understand her connection to Grayson. I love Jane and want her to be wanted for who she is now which is a Jane/Deb combo. I like the Judge alot. Grayson is like watching paint dry.

  • Dana

I like Parker and brandy together! Not so sure that greyson deserves Jane though, he only seems intrusted in the pretty model types “

Interested, my bad using a phone.

I really hate that Canada is so far behind on getting this series.

I agree about both Jane/Deb no longer needing to be with Grayson, he’s a washout and Jane is a dynamic woman, not the little magpie that Deb was made out to be, she doesn’t need a man to lead her, she needs one BESIDE her. And as for Brandy and the boss??? NO WAY JOSE’!!! NO CHEMISTRY, and it’s not because she’s black or Brandy, there is just NOTHING there. The story line of him with a kid is wasted. The show doesn’t need drama from all ends. He was fine with Kim and they DID have what it took to keep it together. A real shame you stopped that line of thought.

I like the idea of Parker and Brandy, makes you wonder if this time it’s true love for him vs. office romance, and Kim and him never had much outside the office. Stacy telling Grayson might be because Jane and the Judge are getting too close, or perhaps Jane has found a loop hole threw her contract, Jane can’t tell anyone but Stacy can.. Fruit for the mind, all in all the story line is great, keep watching and if you can give Life time real life viewer ratings to keep the show going.

I like the Parker and Kim and Elisa (Brandy) triangle. It’s interesting. I also like it gives me a chance to see Brandy in a role again. She’s a really good actress. Maybe it’s just there to bring he and Kim together because Elisa seems really just too sweet for Parker and they can’t change Parker too much — he’s the resident a–hole on the show. So, it’s all good.

I LOVED IT!!!! I am so sad that the season is over and I cannot wait until next season. I don’t know what I will do with my Sunday nights now. I can’t believe Stacy told Grayson about Jane. I hope they end up together in the end!!! Thanks Lifetime!!!!!

I am a 42 yo guy who loves this show!!! The season finale was awesome – it was like “an entire season in one episode”!!! Some episodes were like “things are not moving” but hey not this one – I just couldn’t wait for Season 4… pulling all my hair – not sure how things would be – Jane gone, Parker gone…will the shooting be in Italy and US… poor Grayson… how will they all come back together… OMG… please give us a hint… THANKS LIFETIME!!! AND JOSH BERMAN!!!

  • vanessa

I am so looking forward to season 4!!! I hope Greyson and Jane can be together one day :)

  • pat

I really liked how this season ended. Judge changing his plans to be with Jane and Grayson left waiting and wondering why he had not see this coming. Can not wait to see how this all begins next season……
