'Revenge' creator Mike Kelley: 'You will have all of the answers by the 13th episode'

The new fall TV season has officially begun, and one of the breakout shows (and one of the favorites around the EW offices) is ABC’s new nighttime soap Revenge. Starring Brothers & Sisters‘ Emily VanCamp as the vengeful Emily Thorne, who seeks retribution for her framed father, Revenge premiered on Wednesday to a surprisingly healthy 10.1 million viewers. So how will this soap play out? “I will tell you will have all of the answers to all of the questions that the pilot poses by the 13th episode,” says creator/executive producer Mike Kelley (Swingtown). “Then we will have an whole new installment of revenge that has to do with the trial of the murderer [of Daniel Grayson] that will take us through the back-half of the first season.”

The biggest question is what would season 2 entail? Another revenge saga? Basically, yes, according to Kelley, who cites Dexter as somewhat of a storytelling model. “In our show, there’s a whole conspiracy and seasons worth of people that will reap what they’ve sewn,” says the producer. “Revenge is a universal concept and it’s gonna permeate the show on every level. I plan to do installments of revenge. So I’ll set two installments a season which will be self-contained. They’ll focus on a group of people that need to come down and we’ll introduce new people. We’ll also give other characters on the show a reason to want their own revenge.”

Sounds great. And as long as Emily, Nolan and Victoria are with the show, I’ll watch.

I like that Kelley plans to reveal the secrets of this plot by the 13th episode. The problem with other serials is that they try to tell a story over an entire series, where always new secrets come on board without others told.

This soap is a real surprise to me and I hope it stays around for years to come. ABC has a hit there on it’s hands and with “Desperate Housewives” in their final year it’s great to see another primetime soap.

But didn’t he say they wouldn’t stick around n there would be new cast members, stories…..or am I missing something?!?

——-I liked the commercials from the get-go and thought the plot sounded compelling and might possibly have a real shot. The cast did a wonderful job in the frist episode. Emily Van Camp has matured a great deal since B&Ss and was wonderful in this part. Madeleine Stowe was exquisite as the quintessential Hamptons snob.

Mike Kelley and all the Writers and Cast are FABULOUS! My whole office is watching. We have our Revenge Water Cooler Review every Thursday morning…love the show…it better be around for years to come. Great Job! We also love Once Upon A Time…..great stuff these two shows are the BEST in a long, long time!!!!!

  • Amy

This show is a pleasant surprise. Hopefully they can sustain the brilliantly sweet pilot. Thanks for the swoon worthy guy who plays jack too!

    • lisa g.

I watched it on Friday after reading the great reviews on ew.com! Liked not loved it. It has a really good glossy look to it which I appreciate….as ez as that sounds it must not be because a lot of shows just don’t LOOK good n It’s a turn off.

    • lisa g.

And wow Madeleine stowe hasn’t aged at all!

      • Valley Girl

Yeah, I caught the re-run last night, too, and was intrigued enough to add it to DVR in case I forget to watch it live.

Madeleine Stowe does look amazing, doesn’t she? what an amazing complexion – as if time stopped for her.

The less Connor Paolo is featured, the better. He can just go back to GG, IMO.

  • ADJ

I was very impressed with Revenge! Looking forward to what’s up ahead!

    • Jethro

It actually was better than I thought, hope ABC keeps it around. They need decent dramas, with Body of Proof and D/H, not doing as well as expected. Pan Am too early to tell, C/A’s will fade fast and Gray’s and P/P are stale.

Will continue to tune in, Emily is a great leading lady, then again, she made B&S’s worth watiching!!

  • A2

Suprised by how much I like it.

    • dinana

Me too…maybe season 2 could be a different cast with a different story..that would be interesting.

      • sarah

Yup, the show was way superior to the previews that were shown. I’m glad people are tuning in after so many positive comments.

  • Samantha

I enjoyed this show and I hope it continues to do well! I love ashley madekwe and I’m glad to have her on my TV again!

    • Brenda

I also really like Ashley Madekwe. I was so disappointed she wasn’t on the last season of SDCG. Maybe she’ll be the next person seeking revenge.

      • Samantha

That would be really great! She needs more exposure because she’s really talented! Her excuse for not being in the last series was because Bambi was married but she could have still hung out with Belle!

  • SaraJeanQueen

I had no plans to watch this show but every minute sucked me in more. I REALLY liked it. At first I thought that Jack = Daniel (confused for a while) but once I figured it out, very satisfying.
They made Daniel just unlikable enough to not care that he was shot.

  • Dave

the Revenge pilot was the biggest surprise of the week. really sleek, pretty well acted, nice & soapy … i’m in!

  • Kat

Loved it! So much better than the Ringer.

  • Poppy

I really enjoyed Revenge, however, I went in with negative vibes because every time I turned on ABC I was watching an add for it. I was getting a little weary, but watched it anyway, and I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised, and am looking forward to knowing the answers after 13 episodes – not like those idiots at AMC where we were told we’d know who killed Rosie Larson on The Killing at the end of the season – that was seriously lame.

    • Mel

I agree. I saw too many ads over the summer on TV and in magazines. I swore I wouldn’t watch it and then the last 2 weeks up to the premiere it started looking intriguing. I caught the pilot and I’m already hooked. Awesome new show!

  • Chris

Not sure how i feel about this. I think Emilys story could go on for years. If it continues to do well i dont want a different story next year.

    • Kris

I know, I feel like she doesn’t even have to reveal herself until Season 2, why rush it?

      • Chris

I guess i would keep watching as long as Emily and Victoria are still on but im kinda disappointed. Lets just wait and see what happens.

  • Kris

LOVED the show! My favourite new series by far but I’m not sure how long it can go before the “Revenge” model gets a bit stale. The first season seems pretty solid but how many times can we watch “okay, this person needs revenge, now this person does, now this person does…” before it just gets old?

  • Lorrie

I caught the repeat on Friday. I enjoyed it.

  • Josh

So we’ll have a new cast every season?

    • Chris

Not necessarily but im guess ing they will add new characters and some older ones will leave kinda like Desperate housewives.

  • Jaded

I loved this show! I hope the rest of the series can be as fabulous as the pilot!

  • penanddes
