If you’re a fan of ABC’s darling sitcom The Middle, you know exactly what the “Brick whisper” is. It’s almost too hard to explain unless you watch, but basically, it’s a weird tick from eccentric character Brick (Atticus Shaffer), who puts his head down and repeats the last words he’s said in a creepy whisper. It sounds weird, but it’s truly funny on screen.
In this Wednesday’s episode “Hecking Order,” Glee star Chord Overstreet begins a guest stint on the show — as Brick’s new fourth grade teacher, Mr. Wilkerson — and EW has got an exclusive, behind-the-scenes video of Shaffer teaching Overstreet how to do the “Brick whisper.” “It’s a requirement for every guest star,” Shaffer tells Overstreet, of having to learn how to do his patented “whisper.” “Ray Romano, Betty White, everyone who’s on has to learn the ‘whisper.’”

Chord Overstreet is 22 and he’s playing a young teacher just out of college so his character is probably the same age.

I don’t watch the show, but that is a cute video. And Chord is the best looking 4th grade teacher I have ever seen. Matthew Morrison (aka Mr. Scheuster) should takes some wardrobe tips….

Did you know the kid who plays Brick is 13 years old? He has some kind of genetic disorder…I think it’s why you never really clearly see Brick running or walking around. Anyways…I LOVE the Brick whisper.
I have noticed that he limps. Regardless, Brick is one of the best characters on TV and I LOVE the whisper. I even do it myself from time to time.
Its never a good sign when a show starts to feature celebrity guest stars in each ep. Last week it was Ray Romano. After awhile it distracts from the regular assemble of actors
I dunno about that. True, Ray Romano might of been a distraction, but Doris Roberts was fantastic as Ms. Rinsky (almost makes me sad Brick had to continue to 4th grade), and Betty White was great as “the enforcer” librarian…”you know where you get in this life without knowing cursive..NOWHERE!”
If this website weren’t so obsessed with “Glee,” we wouldn’t consider this a case of a “celebrity guest star.” The guy is an up and coming actor who has one major credit (a recurring role on a TV series) to his name. Not saying he shouldn’t have the part, but it isn’t as if we’re getting Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise here.
I’ve always wondered if there is a system to the “Brick Whisper.” He doesn’t do it on every sentence, and I haven’t noticed that he does it at a regular interval, or on specific words or phrases, or in certain situations. I’m wondering if it’s done completely randomly, or when they feel the scene needs something extra, or what.
absolutely one of the best shows on TV. Fantastic writing, hilarious characters. Didn’t we ALL feel like Sue Heck in our Freshman year of high school?
I really like the special guests-Ray Romano was perfect. Because the scripts are so flawlessly written the guest appearances blend in perfectly.
This show doesn’t get enough attention.
atticus shaffer has osteogenesis imperfecta…..brittle bone disease. he has stiffening in his bones that make them rigid and makes his movements limited. he is the best actor on the show. the only character i find irritating on the show is Sue she cannot possiblebe that dim witted or unbelivably gullible.

Chord was a perfect comic foil to Brick’s dad. He was great in the role and I hope to see him in future episodes.
You actually make it seem so easy along with your presentation but I in finding this matter to be actually one thing that I think I might by no means understand.
