Annie and Liam’s split in this week’s episode of 90210 didn’t leave much room for reconciliation — and that’s because there likely won’t be, according to Matt Lanter. “This is the most official we’ve seen them split up. We’re filming episode 8 or 9, and there’s no sign of them yet getting back together. So I think it’s official,” he says.
But weep not. Liam’s got a lot on his plate in the next few episodes, especially with a pregnant girlfriend who’s carrying a dead man’s baby. “I think he feels like he wants to step up. I think [Monday night was] a big moment for him. It was a turning point in his life — just growing up and becoming an adult and becoming mature and having responsibilities,” he says. “We’re going to see him accept the responsibility and then struggle with it. He’s not going to be able to support it — both emotionally and financially. So even though he makes some choices, he still struggles. He’s still a young kid.”
The weight of their situation might even prove to be too much for the relationship to handle, Lanter says. Wait, did we say, “might?” We meant will.
“[Jane] is not in it for the long haul. They’re not getting married, I’ll put it that way. Some detours happen within the next few episodes that no one foresees. That alters [their] route drastically,” he teases.
The result will find Liam interacting more with Teddy (Trevor Donovan, who announced this summer he was exiting the series) after the pair start “getting into some extreme sports.” “I love their characters together. We have a lot of over-the-topness on the show. But they are two characters who are very real. Teddy’s struggles are very real, and I feel the same way about Liam. He struggles with wanting love from his family and responsibility,” says Lanter. “I feel like we do have a couple of scenes where we have a few heart-to-hearts. I wish we could develop their friendship a lot more, but Teddy’s not going to be around much longer.”
