'90210' scoop: Matt Lanter talks Liam and Annie's breakup and teases 'detours' with Jane

Annie and Liam’s split in this week’s episode of 90210 didn’t leave much room for reconciliation — and that’s because there likely won’t be, according to Matt Lanter. “This is the most official we’ve seen them split up. We’re filming episode 8 or 9, and there’s no sign of them yet getting back together. So I think it’s official,” he says.

But weep not. Liam’s got a lot on his plate in the next few episodes, especially with a pregnant girlfriend who’s carrying a dead man’s baby. “I think he feels like he wants to step up. I think [Monday night was] a big moment for him. It was a turning point in his life — just growing up and becoming an adult and becoming mature and having responsibilities,” he says. “We’re going to see him accept the responsibility and then struggle with it. He’s not going to be able to support it — both emotionally and financially. So even though he makes some choices, he still struggles. He’s still a young kid.”

The weight of their situation might even prove to be too much for the relationship to handle, Lanter says. Wait, did we say, “might?” We meant will.

“[Jane] is not in it for the long haul. They’re not getting married, I’ll put it that way. Some detours happen within the next few episodes that no one foresees. That alters [their] route drastically,” he teases.

The result will find Liam interacting more with Teddy (Trevor Donovan, who announced this summer he was exiting the series) after the pair start “getting into some extreme sports.” “I love their characters together. We have a lot of over-the-topness on the show. But they are two characters who are very real. Teddy’s struggles are very real, and I feel the same way about Liam. He struggles with wanting love from his family and responsibility,” says Lanter. “I feel like we do have a couple of scenes where we have a few heart-to-hearts. I wish we could develop their friendship a lot more, but Teddy’s not going to be around much longer.”

This swell show should be on every night.

Cool! Love Liam and Teddy being pals

Unfortunately the first 3 episodes of this season have been the worst and getting rid of Teddy isn’t doing them any favors. The writers have gotten so lazy its weird how they are just forcing plots to happen in ways that feel completely fake. I will stick with it but it’s really trying my patience.

I thought Teddy’s arc was the only interesting one last season. Everything else was so beyond anything resembling reality that it was just obnoxious. I’m not saying it has to look like real life but the show should at least resemble some kind of reality that exists in this dimension.

I agree, it’s like producers dont want to invest in gay cast members because they cant hookup with the rest of the cast.

Yeah, there’s a flatness to the show this season so far. It’s still so odd to me that they take one of the more interesting character arcs from last year (Teddy) and write him off, and yet think bringing in a bratty little sister for Navid is going to totally pull viewers in. And they have a great bad girl in Adrianna, but they’ve neutered her. And Silver – she’s still kinda of acting like she’s not taking her meds regularly – she’s kind of manic in some scenes, and I don’t think that’s actually the case. Oh, i forgot surfer chick’s dull storyline (so dull, I cant remember her name) and what about Dixon’s pill popping? Lame, lame, lame …

Lets not forget Liams stupid drunk bar buying and wanting to raise a baby that isn’t his. And Annies stupid i’m a hooker without sex plotline. And Navids stupid stolen car ring plotline.

I agree this is the first time I haven’t liked any of the storylines for each character. Annie’s stroylines are usually the only ones I don’t like and that’s b’c I think it’s annoying when writers try to make one of the female leads the “good girl” but instead make the character come off as whiny with the why is everything happening to me b’c I never do anything wrong attitude. That’s the exact same reason I don’t like Teri Hatcher’s character on Desperate Housewives.

why get rid of Teddy, a hookup with Liam opens up a whole new possibility. I’m weak in the knees already just thinking about it.

This season has been straight up crap. The new brass has set fire and pissed all over Rebecca RK Sinclair’s had awesome work from the past 2 season. Now it’s awful cliches, and House Bunny remakes. Barf. Annalynne mccord deserves better.

    • Kris

Annalynne McCord is lucky to get the crappy writing she does get. She belongs in community theatre and nothing more.

      • Rocky

Haven’t people in community theatre suffered enough?

The show is so bad this year. Most if not all the storylines are rediculous and predictible. I knew Annie’s new guy was a relative of the old dead lady. I knew the Sorority didn’t want Naomi, and I knew that the kidnapping was fake and that Naveed was going to end up going to his uncle for money. Rediculous – Dixon living at a beach house with the new bad boy (how is Dixon affording this without a job or rich parents?) At least in the original 90210 Brandon worked at the Peach Pit. I am about finished with this. My husband calls the show “9021-Over Again” ! Priceless!

    • Raisa

Dixon works for Sharazzi, he’s being paid as an asst partner, right now he’s taking the money from college and using it on his DJ career and Navid got him the credit for the beach house since he messed up the dorm situation. Dixon’s drug storyline is actually being talked about alot, so it ain’t lame. The new brass is 10x better than Rebecca Sinclair could ever be, for one Dixon, Liam and Navid have layers, the friendships are real and the girls are being written rootable. Teddy’s not a big loss.

      • Ka’lel

        Agree

I’m really sad that Annie/Liam are over. They were my only reason to watch 90210. I have no idea why this show feels the need to ruin every one of their couples for the sake of hooking the characters up with new people. Annie/Liam, Dixon/Silver, Adrianna/Navid were all perfectly great relationships that were ruined because the writers were too lazy to think of new storylines to write for them. It’s like every 5 months they say “Ok, that’s it, we’re bored with them, lets hook everyone up with new people.”

  • noneB

New season? i just don’t feel it. Everything seems annoying..

  • Carrie

I believe the ratings for the last episode was up about 25%, especially in the female market. I have a feeling it’s because Liam and Annie had a lot of scenes together that episode. Now that fans know they won’t even be close to getting back together by episode 9…watch the ratings go puff down the toilet and the show be at risk for cancellation. Producers better be clever with their commercials.

  • Sandy

Ya im deffinetly not gonna watch it again till Annie and Liam get back together.. thats the only reason I do watch the show!

  • Daniel Gonzales

I can’t believe people actually want Annie and Liam together . What would they do? Go to the park? He builds a boat and Annie complains about how the wind is messing up her hair. They are BORING!

  • Christina

Liam & Annie can’t be over,Lannie is 90210 & it won’t be the same ,without them being 2gather 4 good as couple,Lannie are the reason why alot of us watch the show counting me.They to bring them back or the ratings will go down

  • Jen

Shenae Grimes can’t act worth a lick. She’s the worst lead actress in prime time.

  • Amanda Kickingwoman

I love this show to death but sad about annie and liam I want them to stay together

  • Amanda Kickingwoman

I agree wish this show was on every night =)
