Celia Hodes from Weeds is coming to TNT’s The Closer!

EW has learned exclusively that Elizabeth Perkins — best known for her terrific run on the Showtime drama — will guest star as the wife of the LAPD Police Commissioner in an episode airing Dec. 19. Perkins’ character, Gail Meyers, gets into some serious trouble when she tries to cover up a potential scandal.

Gail’s husband is played by the great Mark Moses, better known as Paul Young from Desperate Housewives. And look who else is joining the star-studded episode titled “Road Block”– Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Maggie Wheeler, who will play Gail’s friend who is interrogated by Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick). Nice.

The Closer begins its winter run on Nov. 28.

Peter Berg is getting ready to step out from behind the camera.

The Friday Night Lights executive producer is set to guest star in an upcoming episode of NBC’s new police drama Prime Suspect (on which he’s also an executive producer). Berg will play a married Deputy Chief named Dan Costello on the show. Jane (Maria Bello) and Dan used to be lovers, and now rumors of their past affair have cast doubt on Jane’s recent promotion to homicide. The guest role is currently set for one episode.

Berg’s last TV acting gig was when he guest starred in 2008 for one episode on Lights (which just picked up some posthumous Emmys last night). Prime Suspect launches this Thursday at 10 p.m. and previously signed Jay Mohr as a guest star.

GLEE-MERGENY!*
Sure, the kids from Glee know how to work a carpet, but show me the woman with the scoop and I’ll show you the person I want to talk to. For EW, that was Dot Marie Jones, who we caught up with on Saturday night at the Performers Nominee Reception at Spectra by Wolfgang Puck. Jones, who, like a trooper, came out for the festivities despite her broken foot, dished that her injury is actually being worked into the show. “Yeah, Ryan [Murphy], the boys, wrote it into the third episode that I broke my foot,” she said. “I don’t want to say how they wrote it in because it’s very funny.” READ FULL STORY »

'All My Children' holds onto Cameron Mathison and Lindsay Hartley for online run

The production company that will continue All My Children online just announced that Cameron Mathison (Ryan Lavery) and Lindsay Hartley (Dr. Cara Castillo Martin) will continue on the sudser once it goes online.

Prospect Park is expected to announce the start date of production in the coming weeks. All My Children will end its run on ABC this Friday.

This is the first casting announcement about All My Children’s future since Prospect Park acquired the sudser. The company also bought One Life to Live in an exclusive, multi-year deal that would allow the soaps to continue beyond their finale dates on ABC. One Life to Live is set to sunset in January. Prospect Park is a media and production company founded in 2009 by Jeffrey Kwatinetz and former Disney Studios head Rich Frank. (The company’s best known for producing Royal Pains for USA and Wilfred for FX.)

Earlier this month, Prospect Park announced that Erika Slezak (Victoria Lord), along with Ted King (Tomas Delgado), Michael Easton (John McBain) and Kassie DePaiva (Blair Cramer) have agreed to continue with One Life to Life. Prospect Park is still in the process of closing a deal for the actors with American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which will enable the studio to sell a second window of the soaps to a cable network.

Charlie Sheen close to settling case with 'Men' ex-bosses, say sources

charlie-sheen_320.jpg

Either Charlie Sheen has officially launched his rehabilitation tour, or he’s suddenly feeling flush with cash.

In the last week, Sheen has made appearances that suggest he’s ready to close the book on his ugly goodbye from Two and a Half Men. Is the Cold War with his ex-bosses over? It could be: EW has learned from several sources that Sheen is thisclose to settling his lawsuit against Warner Bros., which pink-slipped the actor last winter after he publicly derided Men creator Chuck Lorre. Sheen fought back in March by filing a $100 million suit demanding payment for unproduced episodes and compensation for the crew while claiming the studio “wrongfully attributed the suspension of the series and termination of Mr. Sheen’s contract on Mr. Sheen’s alleged statements, conduct, and condition, despite the fact that Mr. Sheen is in compliance with his contract.” The settlement is expected to be in the eight-figure range.

Warner Bros. denied there is a settlement and declined to comment further. Stay tuned.

At the 63rd Annual Emmys on Sunday, Sheen made an unexpected appearance to say ”I want to take a moment to get something off my chest and say a few words to everybody at Two and a Half Men. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together and I know you will continue to make great television.” Last Thursday, he told Jay Leno “I would have fired my ass too,” and followed it up on NBC’s Today by saying he’d be willing to make a guest appearance on the CBS comedy.

Sheen does have something to promote: He agreed to a (fairly vindictive) roast by Comedy Central, which airs tonight. In the meantime,  Sheen is focused on developing a new sitcom called Anger Management with Lionsgate TV and is in talks with veteran TV scribe Bruce Helford (The Drew Carey Show) about fine-tuning the pitch before it goes to market. After courting other comedy writers like Greg Garcia (Raising Hope) or Chris Case (Retired at 35, Reba) to spearhead the project, Lionsgate has set its sights on Helford — a sitcom veteran who also executive produced George Lopez.

Alec Baldwin's Emmys walk-out: So just what WAS that Rupert Murdoch joke, anyway?

Categories: Emmy Awards, Emmys

For all the exciting upsets at last night’s Emmy Awards, one of the biggest stories to come out of the event focused on something that didn’t even happen: Alec Baldwin’s taped segment for opening sketch, which would have featured a joke about the recent phone-hacking scandal which has engulfed News. Corp (the company that owns the Fox network) and its CEO, Rupert Murdoch. After the joke was cut, Baldwin’s part was re-shot with Leonard Nimoy; Baldwin later tweeted, “Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little.” In turn, Fox told EW that corporate connections didn’t affect the choice to cut the joke; the network merely felt it was in poor taste, in light of the serious allegations circling around the case. So just what the heck was the joke, anyways?

Now we know…kind of. READ FULL STORY »

Emmys 2011: What you didn't see on TV

kimmel-fallon

The Emmy Awards are, of course, a distinguished ceremony designed to celebrate the best and brightest working in the television industry. But at the end of the day, the whole spectacle is really put on for one reason: to delight fans and viewers across the country at home. Ahem, that’s all of you out there.

But for those of us lucky to be in Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre last night (that’s me, along with a handful of other EW staffers!), there’s definitely more going on than just what’s shown on TV, as you might expect. For the most part, the telecast’s producers try to keep any unexpected, outlandish happenings to a minimum, but there were a few special moments that you definitely didn’t see on television. So let me share my observations:

Top fall TV time-slot battles this week (and who will win)

desperate_housewives_good_wife_320.jpg

Right after the fall schedule was announced last May, I posted a rundown of the most intriguing time-period battles and who I thought would win. There’s been a lot of buzz and new intel about these shows since then, but I’m keeping my predictions the same — plus adding a several new entries. So here they are, below. Be sure to check the Inside TV blog every morning for the ratings to see how your favorite shows perform (of course, in today’s DVR era, time periods are less important than they were five years ago, but don’t be fooled: The slots still matter — just ask any show that faced off against American Idol, or one that had the pleasure of airing after it):

Who: CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 vs. NBC’s Playboy Club vs. ABC’s Castle
When
: Mondays at 10 p.m.
Verdict: Castle pulled off a surprise victory in this slot by the end of last season against the first year of Five-0, gradually conquering a time period that it always lost to CBS when CSI: Miami was there. (Castle was especially aided by Charlie Sheen’s freak out and Two and a Half Men going into repeats — thus weakening CBS’ 9 p.m. hour’s lead into Hawaii.) So this is the rematch, with Hawaii bulking up with a ton of guest stars and adding Terry O’Quinn to the cast. Expectations are modest for Playboy Club. Hawaii will go big tonight when Men returns tonight, but in the coming weeks Castle will probably end up slightly on top. And now on Friday nights, it’s Chuck vs… READ FULL STORY »

'90210' scoop: Billy Ray Cyrus will play.... EXCLUSIVE

Billy-Ray-Cyrus_240.jpg

Here’s a fun and unexpected piece of casting for the new season of 90210. EW has learned exclusively that Billy Ray Cyrus has signed on to play Judd Ridge, the father of southern rich kid Austin (Justin Deeley).

The role won’t be much of a stretch for Cyrus: He will play a country western star of a different name. Judd’s son Austin was introduced in the premiere episode as a new love-hate interest for Naomi (Annalynne McCord). They had an adversarial encounter over a house that she wanted to buy.

Cyrus’ episode will air in November. He currently hosts the reality show Surprise Homecoming on TLC. Earlier this year, he finished his five-year run on Hannah Montana with his daughter, Miley.

When Dateline NBC returns for its 20th season this Friday, it will have a new lead anchor: Lester Holt, previously a Dateline correspondent. As NBC announced today in a press release, Holt — an NBC News fixture who also anchors the weekend editions of NBC Nightly News and Today — replaces Ann Curry, who has already taken over for Meredith Vieira as co-host of Today. The news of Holt’s promotion comes at an evolving moment for NBC News, which recently announced the creation of an original newsmagazine, Rock Center with Brian Williams. Dateline has continued to garner solid ratings on Friday, a night when “solid ratings” earn instant grade inflation to “spectacular.”

Jeff Conaway among those omitted from Emmy 'In Memoriam' segment

jeff_conaway

It seems to happen every year at every awards ceremony: A notable star or Hollywood industry member who recently passed away is left out of the “In Memoriam” segment. This year’s Emmys was no exception, as many were stunned to see that Jeff Conaway, who was best known for his work on the small screen in shows like Taxi, Babylon 5, The Bold and the Beautiful, and, sadly, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, was omitted from the montage that paid tribute to those who died in the past year.
